Alternatives to Palemoon for Puppy

#1 Post by darry19662018 »

I'll start the ball rolling by mentioning this:
https://www.hyperbola.info/packages/ext ... easel-uxp/

and a continuation of an old Debian Browser...

How about Midori? If you are looking for binaries then you can look at the Slitaz repos. However, if you compile it you might get the right combination of being able to use a newer version with older libs.

Here's another idea
WebOne - proxy for old browsers to make them Web 2.0-capable , although I just googled it now. so I don't know much about it.
Find me on minds and on pearltrees.

Hi, I've put together a portable Iceweasel based on the newest package from Hyperbola, the required libs are in the 'extralibs' folder.
Tested only on Dpup-Stretch and BusterPup, on other OS's you may need to install missing dependencies.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/kzk ... ar.gz?dl=1

Just extract and inside directory "iceweasel-uxp-52.9.20190308" run the 'iceweasel' script, or run from terminal:

Code: Select all

./iceweasel
The profile will be in folder 'profile'

I'm liking it, it's fast !
The default home (search) page didn't work for me , btw, so in that case change homepage to something else.

Fred

Ice-weasel tests so far: Video playback normal - so works with html5 installed addblocker and it is fast.

Changed homepage to startpage.com.

Thank you Fred once again.

@ Darren/Fred/all:-

Just purely for the sake of interest, have a look here:-

https://www.webdevelopersnotes.com/list ... ix-systems

It's a complete listing of all the browsers available for Linux & Unix as of around 18 months ago. You might be surprised just how many there actually are; 47 in that list (though more like 38, since the last 9 are discontinued listings).

We're not short of choice.

@ Darren:-

All that link does is to bring up a '404 Not Found' error, mate. I can reach the iceape-uxp page, no problem......but as soon as you click on 'Download from mirror' that, unfortunately, is what comes up..... :?

You can find tar.xz packages for iceape here:
https://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/hyp ... hyperbola/
These are already compiled, but may need extra dependencies (libs) installed (or included in a portable setup) to work on Puppy. (and probably only works on modern Puppies).

I think I'm going to give this one a miss, kiddiwinks. All I get with these links on the Compaq desktop is a '404 not found', and if I try to connect with the anciente Dell lappie all it does is to lock the entire system solid.

In short, I can't even access the links.....and I've never, ever had that happen before. So, I'll bow out now.

I thought nluug was supposed to be faster than Ibiblio, anyhow? I can connect to Ibiblio fine, but nluug....? Something not right there, for sure...........
