I was looking for an email client that is a little more private than I've been able to find. I need a client that when I open it, it doesn't show all my emails. I've tried Slypheed and I can't find any settings that would relate to my issue. When I open the program, my emails are just sitting right there.
I tried Thunderbird and it has the option to "expunge" my inbox, so I tried it. When I quit and then opened it back up my emails were there. Also, if i just click cancel at the password prompt, I can browse and open all the emails in the inbox.
I don't want someone to be able to open the email client and see ANY of my emails. Can someone help me?

I appreciate the responses. I should have clarified that I don't want people that use the computer to be able to just click the email icon and be able to read the emails in there.
Can I encrypt a folder that the email client resides in? Can I encrypt the shortcut on the desktop or programs list?
I would like to not have to use the web to check email if possible.

You can easily set a 'Master Password' on Thunderbird and/or SeaMonkey mail. So, if anybody click on the 'E-mail' icon will be prompted to enter the master password. If press 'Cancel' no account will be lauched.
You could also set-up your email client to show you only your newer mails, but i'm not sure if Slypheed could do that...
If this is a security issue, try to use a HARD master password to see if its good enought to your needs.

Long time without use Firefox, but should be something really close to those steps (search for a 'preferences' option). Right?

Gmail allows POP3/IMAP access for free. Of course the hassle of changing your email address etc. Plus you have to trust googleduckstheword wrote:That worked perfectly.
