You can't replace the kernel easily, it's quite complicated - here.

Both kernels are pretty much the same, so there's no reason to do this unless you really want the extra optimizations

The welcome screen comes up every bootup.
I installed flash in iceweasel and the cnn and youtube videos play
okay but you have to click on the logo in the video to get it going.

Yep, it's FlashBlock, comes pre-installed. I think I'll remove it ... more choice.

Thanks for the input - I removed the welcome screen because the Woof one is good enough (and I know what went wrong - I renamed the script, so it no longer deletes itself)

EDIT: I want to the modularity experiment till Monday - make an ISO with a zdrv and make a SFS of xorg_high, Iceape and the fixes. My size estimatation is 130-135 MB.

inpu 001, could not connect to wired network. Hardinfo sees my ethernet card but network tools don't.

Thought I was in the same boat....no interface was detected here either(wired dsl).SNS was a dead end but was able to use Network wizard to manually load the necessary module and get online. Posting from 001 now.

Insidious worked fine on our older z500 laptop.

Luci-239 got further on the z500 laptop here than on my CF-29 but still troubles - it would not recognize the wireless nic BCM5705.

dpup009 works fine.

Notes: I was able to load the Seamonkey 2.0.10 SFS on all of them. I added the WINE 1.3.7 SFS but haven't tested it yet.

On my older Panasonic Toughbook CF-28 Insidious brings up a blank screen and only CTRL-Backspace/CTRL-ESC/CTRL-DEL can break out to a reboot.

On the same machine spup040 works fine.

Fluppy008 loads OK but pwireless refuses to recognize the wireless nic.

dpup009, which works flawlessly on my CF-29, has the same blank screen problem as Insidious.

luci-239 shows a "cat: /tc/oldmousedevice error then drops to a command prompt for xorgwizard. No setting in xorg is accepted - just loops back to the command prompt. Choosing Vesa is rewarded with a blank screen from which CTRL-Backspace recovers to the command prompt.

Hopefully some of this is helpful to someone ...

Fresh manual frugal install on my old P3 test box.Initial boot had working internet and sound...no problem setting desired 1024x768x24 resolution.

Could be possible make Dpup010 or zen006 with the old kernel 2.6.21.7 of puppy 4.1.2 ?? (I ask because the old kernel like that one shutdowns the pc smooth )

What of the debian squeeze or sid have the best mplayer in performance ??

Yeah, it's possible and easy. Maybe I'll write a guide that explains how to build your own Insidious with Woof.

And regarding mplayer, I'm not sure what the Debian guys do. I do know they have multi-threaded, 586, 386 and k6 packages.

At the moment I'm compiling compat-wireless-2010-11-26, to make the kernel better with wireless. This should make it the "ultimate" kernel for the Puppy agenda - better support for older hardware, (some degree of) modem support but great performance and compatibility with recent hardware.

I also want to compile acpi_call as pemasu suggested ... any other third-party drivers you need?

EDIT: meh, compat-wireless failed hard, unknown symbols and stuff

EDIT 2: I want to make a PPM repo just for the Insidious packages - the kernel, the extra drivers and all the "generic" packages (themes, wallpapers, etc'). I need to talk to Saturn, he's the owner of brainwave ... maybe he can help with this

If Insidious has its own repo, it means its packages can be used for any wooflet and it gives it more freedom (i.e if someone makes a good package, we can upload it to the repo so it's available in PPM) - we have access to the package repositories and we're more independent.

EDIT 3: I was able to create a PPM repo for Insidious Puppy for testing.

If you want to add it to PPM, edit /root/.packages/DISTRO_PET_REPOS.
Add this:

at the end of the file.

Then, download Packages-puppy-insidious-official to /root/.packages and enable the Insidious repo in PPM's settings (the "configure" thing). At the moment the repo has the packages listed in that file, they're the ones used to build Insidious Puppy.

My only problem with the kernel 2.6.32.x is the poweroff process , first the computer poweroff . OK now! The question is if its normal that the hards drives poweroff first than the motherboard and power supply?? Because I had use the 2.6.21. or the 2.6.18. and all poweroff at the same time.

Just tell me which kernel you want, I'll do my best. You can choose between all the Puppy kernels - 2.6.18.1 (or whatever it was), 2.6.21.7, 2.6.25.16, 2.6.30.5, 2.6.31.14, 2.6.32.16, 2.6.33.2, 2.6.34.7, 2.6.35.7, .... and the Insidious Puppy kernel I compiled, 2.6.32.26.

Just tell me which kernel you want, I'll do my best. You can choose between all the Puppy kernels - 2.6.18.1 (or whatever it was), 2.6.21.7, 2.6.25.16, 2.6.30.5, 2.6.31.14, 2.6.32.16, 2.6.33.2, 2.6.34.7, 2.6.35.7, .... and the Insidious Puppy kernel I compiled, 2.6.32.26.

I think that the 2.6.21.7 could be a good old one uniproc kernel and shutdowns wells the VIA EPIA M.

I try some of the method of change kernels with edit sfs but gives me kernel panic ...

Just want to add that I made my first USB-Flash drives today and dpup-005 is booting on the asus netbook and the acer lappi.

I am very happy about that !!

I also made remastered isos bootable !!

The next would be 009 because of the debian kernel ...

The remastering confuses much because it didn't copy files from /root and /etc but this is a thing that has to be looked for inside the /usr/sbin/remasterpup2: Bourne shell script text executable file ...

The abiword at 005 is 1.1 mb smaller than on 009 and it is running there also with the whole /usr/share/abiword-2.8/* files from 009.

Tried to compile abiword from debian source and that didn't worked either (lenny,squueze and sid). The debian patches are just about version and license and such and as my experience can tell inherit no bug patches

. I even had to compile several lib*.la for abiword. I lost two days for that !

And I found another way to get the 2barks working : (aplay /usr/share/audio/2barks.au &)
This seems to work:

I want to update that I achieved 2barks at 005 by adding
set Speaker 75% unmute
set Speaker -21dB
to /etc/init.d/alsa
and
# Which slider to link with the tray_icon, identified by numid
#tray_control=37
tray_control=1
to /root/.retrovolrc

so I just placed the Startup part much earlier at delayedrun and kept 01mickos part and added
sleep 4
killall delayedrun
exit
to the end.
