Sub_title: using someone else's pc and router so can't change

Using an inspiron e1505 (just in case the problem is something else) and not having luck with the wireless, so have to keep reverting back to microKnoppix for my OS. I like the feel of Puppy and want to use it though.. Ok, the problem.

The routers SSID is with the character "Ç" and I can't change it. I tried to connect via the terminal, but don't have either the proper keyboard (when I set to latin base) and can't copy paste into the terminal. I tried using hex codes for the char, but still ran into problems with the commands. I think something is chopping up the character. Any ideas?

..Oh, I'm stuck to using live CD's because this isn't my PC and I promised to use my own OS without touching their drive. I have a USB and a CD with Puppy on it, and can transfer files and open them later with Puppy through Knoppix. It's a pain, but I'm trying to get Puppy working.

Ok... since yesterday, I have found out that I can copy/paste with shift-insert, but haven't gotten a chance to try it out. If it I can make it work, I'll make a script for it.

I believe the e1505 uses a bcm4311 wireless chipset.
This special 431 Puppy with bcm4312v3 iso make give better
results with wireless.

Cool, I'll check it out. I think the wireless is working, because I can see the connection. That's why I was thinking it was the character usage. I'm hoping this tool doesn't cut the char though. We'll see.

Thank you. I'll let you know if it worked.

FYI, I never got it to work with the SSID that had a "Ç" in it. I did find that it must have been entered on initial setup, because I changed it and couldn't change it back without hacking... I decided not to though and (kind of dishonestly) told them I couldn't. Works for me, because now I can use Puppy again...

Either way, KNOPPIX worked just fine with the "special character" and still use that when I have to. There are plenty of SSIDs here that have something that's not normal in English. It has nothing to do with hardware as changing the SSID makes it work.

Either way, it's solved because it was changed, but it's not really a solution since I really shouldn't have changed it for the person.

To be honest, I really can't see where the different character would make a difference: the SSID is always just treated as a quoted string.
Did you look in the config file and see that it was written there correctly?

The two things I can think of that might be weak spots are:
- wpa_passphrase is used to calculate the PSK -- maybe it has a problem with "special" characters?
- maybe it's something to do with not using a utf8 locale? I doubt it, as copying the character from the screen to a terminal just worked fine for me.

The config was being created with the "\x" and ascii code and the "\" was being dropped or everything from that point was being dropped, I can't remember which. It wasn't recording it as a single char. I tried to create it with the slash and with the char and couldn't get the wpa correct. I think I was missing a command.

Either way, I'll check again later (hopefully I don't get too damned lazy) and try to go more into detail. If you want to check for yourself, set up a wireless router with WPA and an SSID containing "Ç". Use the standard setup wizard and see what it does. If it works for you, then it may have just been a fluke.
