Songbird 1.3a

#1 Post by aragon »

Home: http://getsongbird.com
Version: 1.3a (1133)
Songbird is an open-source customizable music player that's under active development.
Songbird is a combination of a media player and a browser. It uses gstreamer and xulrunner as it's base.

You can download it as an sfs here (Zip-File contains the sfs and the checksum. ): http://puppylinux.asia/tpp/aragon/

User: puppy
PW: linux

The sfs contains all needed libs. The sfs is ~21 mb.

sfs-usage (from: http://www.puppylinux.com/development/p ... gement.htm):
Download any SFS file to /mnt/home (the same place as your "pup_save" personal storage file), run the BootManager (in the System menu) to select or deselect what SFS files you want to use, reboot Puppy and its ready to go.
EDIT 090609: Uploaded 1.3a (1133). Packaged and tested in 4.2.1.

Cheers

Exploring a bit now.
I opened a url for my favorite Belgian radio station, however I don't see a way to have it stick somewhere, so I don't have to type the url again.
Also, why is such a url (mp3 stream) not played directly in songbird, but in gxine?

EDIT
I logged in to last fm and started playing a radio station, until I saw that my pup_save was decreasing rapidly.
I had to stop playing with last fm.
But, altho less, there is still internet activity and my pup_save still decreases.

How does that come?

EDIT 2
Found that a limit is set to the cache. Default 52M, which I reduced to 10M to avoid problems.
But when streaming that Belgian station, why is caching to be used?
I use again streamtuner, which just renders without caching.

Hi Béèm,

i didn't play much with it, just controlled if it works.

i'm at work right now, so only a few hints:

-------------------------
Link to a radiostation
-------------------------
Could you not simple make a bookmark with a right-click > bookmark?

by the way: there is a nice shoutcast-plugin at: http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/1205

-------------------------
Opening external Player
-------------------------
seems like songbird uses puppys regular mime-settings.

no idea at the moment.

- has there been an dialog like open-with...?
- did you also run firefox? which are the settings in ff for m3u?

-------------------------
Internet Activity after Stop
-------------------------
please look at options > advanced > network and tick 'tell me when a website...'. than run last.fm again and stop it and see what's happening.

Maybe that helps.
-------------------------
Decreasing pup_save
-------------------------
maybe the firefox-trick of moving the cache (out of pup_save) will also work with songbird:
- type 'about:config' into the adressbar
- right-click > new > string
- insert 'browser.cache.disk.parent_directory' value '/your/new/directory'
- restart songbird

Another ff-hack might also help: limit the cache-size
- type 'about:config' into the adressbar
- search for 'cache.memory.capacity'
- change the value to an appropiate size
- restart songbird

cheers

ah, i see you edited your post, while i was writing.

streamtuner does not cache as streamtuner does not play ;-) but maybe the player 'behind' streamtuner is caching...

maybe this has nothing to do with the player itself but with the 'stream' (just an idea).
i remember an article i've read about streaming. they said, that most streaming is no 'real' streaming. the file is downloaded in background and played parallel from beginning. this would be an explanation for heavy caching. but that's really just an idea.

cheers

With streamtuner in fact control is given to the default player, which in my case is gxine.
Gxine probably buffers the stream for some x seconds to come and drops what has played already, as my pup_save don't decrease. So I am sure there is no caching involved. In fact that's the principle of streaming.

Do I understand that Sonbird is browser based?
And specially FireFox?
In that case does Songbird use the FireFox user profile or have it it's own?
If FireFox based I understand the issue of decease of the pup_save space.
I have that with FireFox also and therefor I don't use it, but SeaMonkey.

As I have an issue with the open file dialog on my PC I can't tell what happens if I open something from the menu which has a need for browsing to a directory.
Open URL do work.
Will try the bookmark trick.

I added the sfs to /mnt/home as well as OpenOffice.sfs then I went to Boot Manager but it reported there were no .sfs files in /mnt/home ?

I can run them by clicking on them and mounting but not add to boot manager ?

What could be wrong ?

hi tasmod,

if you're using another puppy-version than 4.00, you first have to rename the sfs according to your puppy-version, e.g. songbird_412.sfs.

hope this helps

Thanks Aragon, I tried that but no joy. It seems to be a problem with my system boot arrangement.

I posted on beginners section about my missing initrd.gz I added this to my boot and altered the menu.lst in Grub. This made it boot differently and apps that would not work now worked OK, however I lost all my visual 'settings' changes. i.e. wallpaper etc

Also the apps i had loaded did not appear in puppy manager. This meant they would only run once links established. Oddly it also meant I ran Monkey 1.1.11 when I don't have it installed, I have 1.1.14

I am going to check the contents of initrd.gz and see the script in there.

Oh, yes, Songbird works beautifully in both states of system anyway. Just what I was looking for.

Thanks

Rob

Pelo

You can use Nightingale

#15 Post by Pelo »

Use nightingale for Precise Puppies and Slacko, however not sure playing videos will work with Nightingale.
Pet Songbird 2.3.0a nightly builds (unstable) provided by The Asterisk please click !
What about videos ?
Songbird Will do as well as many jukeboxes, without java or Qt huge libs. For videos, Songbird fails... 2016 Site is dead, you can use Nightingale instead, if needed.
"Songbird does not need Java. It does need Gstreamer and liboil, but those are available from the link I gave. "
