Puppy Ultimate redux

#1 Post by toowoombalinux »

G'day,
After my first foray for an Ultimate addition went awry, I went back to the drawing board and started from scratch again.
This time my testing regime was much stricter - that's why it's taken me 5 mths to begin to talk about this project. I have still continued documentation at this Wordpress Blog:
http://toowoombalinux.wordpress.com/

Brief: Puppy Ultimate Edition is based on Fat-Free Puppy-3.01. It is to be a self-sufficient Operating System to meet the complete needs of a computer user. Lofty goals!

Current state indicates that, once installed, will take around 6.5gbs of Hard Drive. I am very well aware that this flies in the face of the Puppy ethos (lighter and smaller is better) but, in essence, I'm really doing it for myself - I like using a complete OS as I use many functions of that said OS.

But the benefit is two-fold - I am creating a local flavoured Puppy based OS for the Toowoomba Linux Community to install on reconditioned machines, and given to the needy. Ultimate Edition allows a testing base for what works on Puppy - and to-date nearly everything that is Linux works on Puppy.

A few highlights:
* Idle is around 40mbs.
* Firefox 3.6 and Thunderbird 3.0
* Wine-Doors + Picasa + Gnucash
* 50+ Wesnoth campaigns
* 20+ Doom-based games
* 100+ Games
* 600+ fonts
* 300+ plugins for Audacity
* LXDE + KDE 3.5.8 + E17 + IceWM + JWM
* Specialised script launcher for many progammes
* 15+ Audio studio programmes

Anyway keep an eye out for an Alpha release date if this project interests you. All aspects will be tested before an announcement is made as last time some download segments were corrupted and I did not test this before announcing.

I do plan to continue development ... ad infinitum

Cheers
Martin
PS. Puppy is the most versatile little Linux Operating System that exists. It is a testament to Barry Kauler that it continues to go from strength to strength.

G'day, Martin, and good fortune with your very challenging project.

I confess that I was a bit sniffy on first reading your post. After a quick scan of your blog, I have a rather better idea of where you are heading - but not yet a full one - and beg to commend your efforts to keep in mind the importance of low RAM requirements when recycling machines to help the needy. (Something which has been slipping out of focus in Puppy?).

May I suggest that you revisit your prior post and spell out your project objectives in full detail? Otherwise you might find the way forward a bit lonely, and not attract the support which your project deserves.

G'day,
Here are a few objectives I've written for myself as a general guide. Whether I meet these objectives is another matter....

Objectives:
To create an Oeprating System that meets most of the needs of most computer users
* Internet Users - includes Social Networking
* Programmers
* Graphic Artists
* Audio Artists
* General Users
* Gamers
* Windows Users
* Beginners to Expert level
* Students (pre-grade - tertiary)
* Business Users
* System Administrators
To create an Operating System that works on 10+ yo Hardware as well as high-end machines
To create an Operating System that maximises Hardware capability
An Operating System with low idle resourcing
To create an Operating with up-to-date software resulting in regular update releases.
To create an Operating System that does not require a high level of expertise - walkthrough-guides
To create a testing based for the Toowoomba Linux Community's reconditioning programme Operating System
To create a stable, well documented and tested Operating System
To create an Operating System with extended plugins, patches and utilities
To create an extended Puppy-based Operating System as seen in other, heavier Linux Operating Systems
To create an Operating System with multiple environments
To fill a niche market that desires these specifications
And to create an Operating System that I use on a day-today basis.

Size of the Operating System is not a large consideration, due to the availability of large and cheap Hard Drives. However, what is important is the performance and stability of the Operating System. Puppy Linux is very good at this and provides the most suitable base for creating an Operating System for this template.

I, personally have had much good fortune with Puppy 3.01 and the computers I have installed it on. Although other versions of Puppy have their advantages; I , on occasions, have come across compatibility issues. I don't have a technical background, which means that I have limited options but to choose the version of Puppy which works best - which has, consistently, been Puppy 3.01.

I understand that lack of Mobile Wireless support; but for the target audience I don't believe it is a high consideration.

Cheers
Martin

Awesome! :D Looking forward for an alpha, specially because of the audio editing

OTOh, I have only a 8gb hard drive... don't know if this will match the needs of the OS. :)

Still, good luck! this seems like a great plan

Cheers,
Droope

This is great in addressing it this way.

So that your Puppy will integrate into a LAN that includes Windows, it will need SAMBA so that it can share stuff "OUT" to the rest of the LAN. All new devices and ALL Windows PCs since 1994 already have this. The Puppy community is just getting around to addressing this. You may want to include in as an included aspect of your system versus the add-on approach that is current in PPM.

Also, Shinobar has addressed an approach that takes a boot process non-stop to desktop, with IP addressing included. If you find it useful for the community you are going to serve, you may want to see his ISO. Its an ISO and it is called "QuickSet"

If I can help in any way. Post.

Great ideas here.

Hi, just checking on status of this. Any updates yet? This project may fill a need for myself also. I have been gathering some older pentium 4 computers, hoping to start a program to help out people with a need for computers at a minimal cost to them. Thanks, Rob
