Fresh manual frugal install of Wary 090 (2.6.35.7) on my old P3 test box....733 mhz-256 mb ram w/1gb swap.
On initial boot the sound and internet were working out of the box and no problem setting the screen resolution.
Installed Htop and Firefox (upgraded to 3.6.10 w/ the latest flash).Everything appears to be working fine.

Wary Puppy 0.9 (090) feedback

I did a full install of 090 kernel 2.6.30.5.
On first boot the wired internet was connected, wireless keyboard and mouse working.
I installed the nvidia pet from the forum by Gray.
# glxgears

Version 3.2.0 NVIDIA 190.53
Direct Rendering Yes
#
Ogle plays dvds full screen, mplayer plays videos at full screen also.

*******************************************************************************

I did a full install of 090 kernel 2.6.35.7 on another partition.
I installed the devx and the kernal_src-2.6.35.7-patched.sfs and I
downloaded the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.53.run driver from the nvidia
site.I then exited to the prompt and did "sh NVIDIA-Linux-256.53.run",
it returned an error at one point "/sbin/depmod -aq invalid option"
but it gave me the option to continue which I did.
Unfortunately the driver didn't install so no accelerated graphics.

Ogle plays dvds but not full screen, mplayer plays videos but not
fullscreen.

So, wary 090 with the 2.6.30.5 kernel + the nvidia.pet is working great but without
accelerated graphics the 2.6.35.7 kernel isn't so hot.

I notice a few things in PPM wont download, I mentioned nvidia on the blog.

I got the nvidia driver but it wouldn't work for me, though the previous 195 series drivers did work for this card in other kernels. (I am using the 2.6.35.7 kernel)

I grabbed the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.53 from nvidia and compiled it and the card seems to work just fine now.

Code: Select all

or my video test from quickpet ( )

Code: Select all

For your nVidia card, nVidia Corporation GeForce 8400 GS (rev a1)
we think the best add on driver is nvidia-173.14.25 or nvidia-256.35. It would be required for some programs and games with high
graphical content and your desktop might seem a bit more snappy.
They are available in Quickpet

Here's the nvidia driver for k2.6.35.7 packaged. It's the latest 256.59 from the nvidia site.

Works for me and not bad at 15MB. There are details of what cards it is supposed to support.

re: composite extension
lol, just noticed the same thing myself. :)

paste this in at the bottom of /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "1"
EndSection

just above the #PuppyHardwareProfile=

This works for 431 and other 4 ver puppies as well. But if you already have an extensions section, you can add it there.

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Nvidia graphics card and an old 15" CRT

Strangely, a .vob video file refused to play while using Xvesa but plays fine with Vesa. Using 1024x768 24-bit color settings on both. Using 2.6.35.7 kernel.

There seems to be a bug with pfix=ram.

I am supposedly running pfix=ram but I had previously made a savefile and copied the main sfs to an ext4 partition.

It seemed to load too fast at the 'copying to ram' stage of bootup and I didn't hear the cd drive. I didn't think much of it because I was testing the video driver, then I realised the blue led was on on sda5, so the live cd detected that the sfs was on the drive and loaded that. Ok, not a big pain for me.. perhaps it's a new feature?

The pupmode is definitely 5, so that suggests I'm running live. See screeny.

Cheers

openoffice-3.1.1-sfs4.sfs crash

#12 Post by Terryphi »

When I try to open OpenOffice using openoffice-3.1.1-sfs4.sfs on Wary090_kernel2.6.35.7 Wary freezes when the OO splash screen appears.
The only way out is a dirty shutdown.

All Woof-built puppies use Busybox depmod, which has been a contentious decision.

However, the full depmod is still there, renamed to 'depmod-FULL'.

So, just rename /sbin/depmod to something else, and rename /sbin/depmod-FULL to /sbin/depmod, and the Nvidia installer will be happy.

Hmmm, yes, I could just say it's a new feature. However, when users type in "pfix=ram", that's what they want, not a partition mounted.

Um, assuming that you have 256MB or more of RAM, try this:

pfix=ram,copy

I think that should force the .sfs to copy into a tmpfs in RAM and then the partition will be unmounted.

Good results so far with this Wary 0.9. It all basically works on this hardware.

Cannot get full-screen video using PupTelly, but this has been a problem on this harware with most recent Puppies other than Puppy 5. WLAN needs several attempts to connect. This is also nothing new and could be related to a dodgy USB connection on the WLAN dongle itself.

To complement this fine new Puppy version, how about a slimmed-down version of the newly announced LibreOffice?

This is being managed by:http://www.documentfoundation.org as an initiative to free the community version from the shackles of Oracle. It's main philosophy is that no non-free extensions will be allowed and that pace of development will be accelerated unhampered by Oracle's priorities. Damn good thing IMHO. Watch this space.

Yeah, a quickpet helper thingy would be most useful to enable people to quickly install the best video driver for their hardware.

01micko's new Nvidia PET for Wary is a good example of that.

We can also have ATI PETs.

I'm going to have a go at creating some special Intel Xorg PETs for more recent video hardware.

No problems with video, old or new kit, but cannot get sound working in 2.6.35.7 nor 2.6.30 (ALC658). [This version of HardInfo is cr*p - it cannot tell me my sound chip designation]. Where is the simple mixer? All the other distros have one, it can't be very big and makes checking problem sound issues so much easier.
35.7 also has SM set to offline as default, 30.? is OK.

Otherwise quite speedy. Can't wait for the smart guys to offer .pets for decent browsers!

NOTE: After creating a savefile SNS worked flawlessly, see post below
______________________________________________________________

ugh!

SNS and Dougal's network wizard both failed me on my old P3 with Acx card. This time ndiswrapper loaded just fine, but it is raining here, all the doors are shut on the house (I'm in the shed) and consequently I am getting a weaker than usual signal, BUT, with tempestuous' simple command line instructions, which I learnt awhile ago didn't fail me, so there is a bug, and it occurs on the second loop when we are testing for an 'open' key.. (which is what my wep is).. it seems from the log that the essid is forgotten because it says "essid off/any"

Just a thought.. would it pay to echo the essid to a tmp file and then retrieve it on each loop? May slow things by a fraction but should be more reliable. Then of course delete the tmp file once we're connected.

Also, can't get sound on my sblive vibralux.. but I haven't tried too hard yet.. the mixer shows muted even when I adjust it, alsa mixer appears ok. I might install retrovol to see if that works (may have to compile).

Now to compile the OLD nvidia  (BTW, still with k2.6.35.7)

Cheers

EDIT.. woops, missed some XX's

I'm also having sound problems with the later kernel.

While attempting to configure sound using the alsa wizard, a warning message on a yellow background appears (too fast to read fully) saying something about depmod-full.

There is also a warning about sound in the initial boot console text output.
Life is too short to spend it in front of a computer
