nooby wrote:Barry thanks for Wary 096 but sadly it fails to play both .flv and .mp4 on my HDD while both Quirky and Luci and others do play those files from scratch.

Should one activate this in any way. I thought of using wary as my priority but if it fail to play the music video clips that I like then I have to use DPup or somethign that play them.

Quirky has stopped booting so I must have experimented too much.
I am using Acer D250 a Netbook 10.1"
I just checked, .flv and .mp4 play fine.

If you are using a modern netbook, this is not really what Wary is designed to run on, and you may be using the 'vesa' Xorg driver. Look at the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf to check that.

If using 'vesa', then the 'xv' Mplayer video driver will not work, you must use 'x11' -- right-click for the menu in Mplayer and choose Preferences, then Video tab, then choose 'x11', then restart Mplayer.

Or, if you are only using 'vesa', run the Video Upgrade Wizard (see Setup menu) and install the Intel upgrade PET -- then you can use 'xv' in Mplayer.

I am guessing that this is the problem you are experiencing.

Ah thanks indeeed .I remember now you wrote about this earlier but it did not take that time. You are so right.

I tried three times and it failed each time so me are on vesa indeed.
But it failed to install. Acer maybe is too different.

I concentrate to use Fluppy instead. or Puppeee if Jemimah insist that is the one to use on Acer D250.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

I have an Acer netbook with Intel N450 chipset, and the Intel video upgrade PET works fine.

What do you mean by "it failed to install"? A PET is just a PET, it should install, unless there was a problem with downloading it.

Good :D

In accordance with one of Murphies corollaries, I was getting the muted sound a few times on my laptop, now I keep rebooting and it won't happen :(

Barry, it did look as if it worked to install it. I clicked on the pet and it said it installed but then it said

Sorry something went wrong and this pet did not get installed.

I did not write it down and my memory is bad but I tried it two times and same Sorry text in yellow both times.

The first thing you recommended changing to X11 seemed to take effect but did not allow me to play anything.

So something is odd. But Fluppy work very well except that it close things in the upper left corner instead of upper right corner and that is very annoying because the body automatically hit the most right thing and that is not the close down thing. it is the maximize now so I want to change that odd beahavior back to normal close X in the upper most right but fail to know how to edit that behavior.

Hopefully Jemimah or somebody else knows how to.

I am using Fluppy007 now.

Barry, here is an alternative that utilizes the "protect" function to wait for an event-driven sound module, if any have been modprobed.

Code: Select all

 start)
  #101113 Wait for any modprobed sound driver to load.
  SNDMODLIST="`grep ' snd-card-' /etc/modprobe.d/alsa_cards.conf | sed -e 's/snd-card-.//' | grep -w -o 'snd[_-][^ ]*' | tr '\n' ' '`"
  for ONESNDMOD in $SNDMODLIST;do
   pup_event_backend_modprobe_protect --modcheck=$ONESNDMOD && break
  done
  if [ "`lsmod | grep '^snd_'`" != "" ];then

another sneaky report
Pidgin (2.7.1-lucid-i486) doesn't work. Problems with dbus I think.

Code: Select all

# pidgin
process 23521: D-Bus library appears to be incorrectly set up; failed to read machine uuid: Failed to open "/var/lib/dbus/machine-id": No such file or directory
See the manual page for dbus-uuidgen to correct this issue.
  D-Bus not built with -rdynamic so unable to print a backtrace
Aborted
#
As pidgin complained about libdbus-glib I installed it.
Then there was a complaint about libgtkspell and installed it also.
Maybe those aren't the correct ones for Wary.

Also as glibc is still at 2.10.1, trinity-KDE will not work as reported before.
Trinity needs glib 2.12.1

pupdial update for "human factors"

#102 Post by rerwin »

Barry, nap44, 01micko,
I have updated pupdial and modemdisconnect to add contributions from nap44 and 01micko.

Nap44 suggested renaming the "Phone number" label to apply also to the wireless "authentication/access" number, to avoid new-user confusion. Good idea! The attachment now labels that field as "Phone/Access number".

01micko created a tray icon for display during a dialup/wireless call. Clicking it starts pupdial so the user can "Disconnect from Internet". It seems best to keep that a two-step process, to protect from inadvertent clicks on the icon (instead of disconnecting immediately upon the click).

I have requested a revised version of it containing only the tray part, since pupdial/modemdisconnect now includes his changes to them. Either he will post it or I will do it, if he can walk me through genie/vala compilation. But this attachment need not wait for the tray package.

compiling /alsa-utils-1.0.23 :

/alsamixer/widget.c :

Code: Select all

121 : return (void*)panel_userptr(active_panel);
137 : widget = (void*)panel_userptr(panel);
2 (void*) casts to prevent compiler warnings

because /usr/include/panel.h :
67 : extern NCURSES_EXPORT(NCURSES_CONST void*) panel_userptr (const PANEL *);

The path to the deprecated /etc/modprobe.conf file is found in

/root/Downloads/alsa-utils-1.0.23/alsaconf/alsaconf
303 :
if [ "$distribution" = "gentoo" ]; then
cfgfile="/etc/modules.d/alsa"
elif [ "$kernel" = "new" ]; then
cfgfile="/etc/modprobe.conf"
if [ -d /etc/modprobe.d ]; then
cfgout="/etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf"
cfgoldout="/etc/modprobe.d/sound"
and
/root/Downloads/alsa-utils-1.0.23/alsaconf/alsaconf.in

here at dpup-009 I have only

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base-blacklist.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

I don't use alsa much and after starting the alsa wizard because of couriousity it really changed some lines of /etc/modprobe.conf and seemed to have killed retrovol out of the tray.

The
xmlto man alsactl_init.xml
xmlto: /root/Downloads/alsa-utils-1.0.23/alsactl/alsactl_init.xml does not validate (status 3)
xmlto: Fix document syntax or use --skip-validation option

I won't apply this PET, as pupdial_tray needs to be sorted out some more.

I am standardising on all tray applets to be located in /root/Startup, for a planned future tray-applet-manager -- in which applets can be enabled or disabled simply by setting/unsetting their execute flags. Having them all in the same place simplifies management.

Also, I have not yet looked at pupdial_tray and don't know what extra functionality it provides over the current network_tray.

Ttuuxxx spoke about it on page one, but didn't make the pet available.
Using a minimal save file, I don't download pet's through the PPM.
I wish I could download them to some directory without installing, so I can convert them to sfs.
I looked in the pet_packages_wary directory of ibiblio, but this pidgin isn't in there.

I see the entry for pidgin in the packages-puppy-wary5-official file, but it doesn't give me a clue where physically it is.

Yeah, I will need to delete the 'puppylinux/pet_packages-wary' directory as it is no longer used. Causes confusion.
