Fresh manual frugal install of Quirky 140 on the old P3 test box. Initial boot had working sound and internet (wired dsl) and no problem getting desired 1024x768x24 resolution.Looking really good so far.

Hardware: E6550, 2G ram, Radeon X1300, SBLive! 24bit

Quirky 1.4 booted successfully to the desktop(pfix=ram.) Wired lan and sound were setup automatically. I did get the "woof! woof!"

I was asked to select my default audio device. After doing so, I installed mesa and restarted my Xserver... I was then asked once again to select my default audio device. dri fails on my Ati Radeon X1300 the same way it did on Wary.98. I tried enabling Exa which led to a very slow desktop redraw, but no dri. I also tried a couple of different mesa pets, still no dri. Upon restarting the Xserver, I was again asked to select my default audio device.

After a shutdown with a fresh pupsave and restart, I was finally not asked to select my default audio device.

The dvorak keyboard keymap is still broken in the console.

NVIDIA driver works

#7 Post by shinobar »

Burned CD. Regret the tray icons does not appear 55 seconds.
Upgrade X drivers kindly informed to install mesa package first.
Installed mesa from the PPM.
Installed Nvidia driver 260 from the Upgrade X drivers.
Run xorgwizard. Probe, not any choosing.
Works with no problem. Great :D

Quirky 1.4 bug reports and feedback

#10 Post by Billtoo »

I'm running Quirky 1.4 live with a save file.
On first bootup I used sns to setup the wired network, then looked at
the Video Upgrade Wizard and it advised me to install mesa first and
then the commercial ATI driver. There was no option there to install
mesa so I downloaded it in ppm and followed the instructions when it
installed but report-video said I was using the vesa driver.

Then I clicked on the VUW again and downloaded and installed the
commercial ATI driver and followed the instructions again. After doing
that:

# report-video
VIDEO REPORT: Quirky Puppy, version 140

Chip description:
oem: ATI ATOMBIOS
product: REDWOOD 01.00

Driver used by Xorg:
fglrx

Video mode used by Xorg:
Resolution: Depth 24 Depth: "Display"

...the above also recorded in /tmp/report-video
#
But glxgears doesn't work and hardinfo shows:

OpenGL
Vendor Unknown
Renderer Unknown
Version Unknown
Direct Rendering No

Hardware acceleration is definately working though.

I have sound on this pc but I have the same problem as 098 in that
retrovol is totally x'ed out and can't be configured.

When I ran the alsa sound wizard I heard the two barks, if I try to run
alsa mixer in the console it give the error:

# alsamixer
cannot load mixer controls: Invalid argument
#

lspci shows:

00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc Device aa60

Ogle works well on this computer but it doesn't have as many settings
as xine, I made xine-lib-1.1.19-i486.pet and xine-ui-0.99.6-i486.pet
in 098 a few days ago and xine is working well.

Quirky is working well other than those things on this pc, I'm going to try
it out on another desktop that is a little older and I think it'll work better
on it.

Boot off from CD with ram mode

#11 Post by shinobar »

Installed on USB flash using BootFlash. Works no problem.
(But the partition the BootFlash makes may have some problem, but i will report on the issue later.)

Tested the Live CD boot with 'puppy pfix=ram'.
It loads the main sfs file from the USB flash.
This case is no problem. But i think it might be problem when we want to maintain the HDD with booting off from CD with ram mode.

Code: Select all

PUPMODE=5
PDEV1='sr0'
DEV1FS='iso9660'
PUPSFS='sde1,vfat,/qrky_140.sfs'

It's goodbye to Quirky 1.4, the Xorg is too old for my equipment, going the same as Wary is bad, when Quirky 1.3 seemed to be made for a little more cutting edge equipment and worked well on my one year old computer with AMD 3 socket motherboard, quad, amd newer ATI video 4250 and the other machine with 4290 video. Quirky 1.4 can only use a “vesa

Quirky 1.4 bug reports and feedback

Running live with a save file.
On first boot the sound and wired network are working.
The video wizard advised to download mesa first then the commercial
nvidia driver.

I do that and when finished:

# glxgears
37157 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7431.400 FPS
50656 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10131.200 FPS
52290 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10458.000 FPS
52283 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10456.600 FPS
52293 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10458.600 FPS
#
# report-video
VIDEO REPORT: Quirky Puppy, version 140

Chip description:

Driver used by Xorg:
nvidia

Video mode used by Xorg:

It's working well on this 3 year old Acer desktop.

Billtoo,
Did you test glxgears to see if a library is missing?

# ldd /usr/bin/glxgears

...or where-ever glxgears is located.

Bootflash and Grub4dos

#16 Post by shinobar »

There is a serious problem with Bootflash and Grub4dos.
USB flash devices treated by the 'BootFlash' corrupts with Grub4DosConfig v1.6.2.

CAUSE:
Grub4DosConfig v1.6.2 uses large boot loader to support ext4.
It requires 63 sectors for the boot loader.
But the BootFlash makes 32 sectors/track format and leaves smaller space for the boot loader.

SOLUTION:
New Grub4DosConfig v1.6.3 manages this issue. But you need not upgrade the Grub4dosconfig.
Re-format the USB device using gparted before using Grub4DosConfig (back up the data before).
1. Delete all the partition
2. Rewrite the partition table (Device >> Create Partition Table)
3. Create partitions and format.

P.S.
The Grub4DosConfig v1.6.2 on the Quirky-140 does not detect the new Puppy simple file names.
It is not a problem for the Quirky-140 but note that it does not detect Quirky-130 and some.
Try the new version Grub4DosConfig v1.6.3 if you are interested in. Your feed back is welcome.

Partitions candidate of saving the session, pmedia=cd option

#18 Post by shinobar »

Frugal install on HDD or USB flash.
At the first shutdown, the partitions list up to save the session.
The list shows curious behaviour.
  • Frugal install on HDD shows all the partition. Wherever the installed partition, sda1 is the default.
  • Frugal install on the USB flash shows only the partitions on USB flash.
Another thing, I tested booting off the frugal install on HDD with 'pmedia=cd' option.
It failed to find the puppy files.
It is different from older Puppy's. And as the result, UNetBootin installed fails as i reported earlier..

Weird. ATI128Pro AGP : Xorg can crash, irreproducibly, at startup. When it runs, scaling and placement of icons is haphazard; 800x600 res. is unusable. Default background is (unusually) plain white, but other wallpapers do work.
Sound is OK, ditto auto DSL. PPM seems to work but still getting 'missing' message re. alsa &???xul files, even though flash is working. The Opera 'O' icon still overlays the Advert-Blocker in menu.

glxgears is in /usr/bin on the Acer desktop with nvidia card but not there on the hp desktop with ati card.
