Re: Puppy Arcade 10 runs very slow

jukingeo wrote:Hello all,

I had just set up Puppy Arcade 10 on a USB flash drive set to automatically boot on any machine. I have set it up to play Mame arcade games.

Now, while the booting part works great, the trouble I am having is that the games play slower than they should. I have SDLMame for comparison and it runs much faster there.

Would anyone know what would be the cause of the problem?

Thank You,

Geo
You may need to enable OpenGL for improved performance on your machine.
Links for OpenGL can be found here in the main post.

You could also try changing the video output from or to "Xvideo"

Also, you can use the frameskip option to skip frames when the game slows down.

You can disable sound to improve speeds if nothing else works.

All these options can be found in the SDLMAME conifg file, (in /root, double click on it to open it)..
Or in the Settings menus for SDLMAME, GXMAME and/or MAMEPGUI (depending on which you are using)

Hope this helps.

Well, it sounds great... I never got around to making a separate little arcade box, but would still love to... The hardware choices look fine, I may go for a better CPU - but only to play some (mainly the PSX and N64) games more speedily and nicely.

As far as RAM goes, anything over 256mb should work nicely, at 256mb and below, it may be a little slower.

Anyway, one of the major 'issues' you will face is to get OpenGL (3d acceleration) working correctly - I was careful in my emulator choice to make sure this is only required for N64 games... However, all systems will work nicer once OpenGL is working, as well as Adobe Flash video (youtube, etc)..

Choosing the right driver for your gfx chip/card is the hardest part, installing them is usually very easy. Apparently, you need the MESA package for your gfx chip.

So to enable 3D acceleration (OpenGL.. aka DRI), try the MESA package.. If it doesnt work, try the xorg_xorg_full_dri.pet...

These packages can be found here:

- OpenGL Drivers - Nvidia - http://download.tuxfamily.org/nop/
- OpenGL Drivers - ATI, others - http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=48019
- Xorg DRI (may include MESA) - http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... -7.3-1.pet or http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... ri-7.3.pet
- Other Drivers - wifi, etc: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=34159
- MESA (I think) - http://puppyisos.org/isos/2009-01-to-06 ... 5.1-02.pet (user=puppy,pass=linux)

However, I may be wrong, but gfx your card (VIA UniChrome), may not be supported... read here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 741#379741.. (But this might not apply to Puppy Arcade 10... It has a slightly newer Xorg..)

About installing Puppy Arcade to your CF card, I would use the 'Frugal Installer' in Menu->Setup, as it is the simplest method, and fairly automatic (just click next a lot and usually you are fine)..

Thanks for your reply - well I started using puppy linux good few months
Ago just put it on a USB to carry around with me - its great to just take Over a computer Like in work :-)

To be honest I pretty pants with linux lol,
How I found Arcade 10 when I was constantly looking up how to make Mini arcade cabinets ect... and just stumbled across it - I said to myself How did I miss this when I`m already using puppy - its because I never Really came into the forums  lol

Anyway there`s a few options I can take I have a acer aspire revo 3610
With daul core 1.6 atom 4gb of ram and thats small to or Stripping down
My acer aspire one netbook 1.6 single core 1.5gb ram.... and of course the ebox 4300.. or just buy a ITX bundle from somewhere

I`m going to use google sketchup to design the cabinet I think,
If I can get use to it lol

Anyway thanks for your comments and I will be asking questions no doubt

P.S is there anyway of stripping Acrcade 10 down even more?

I recommend 'Woofy' for beginners.
Newest version (much improved) found here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=57037

To delete stuff, you need to supply a text file, containing a list of files to delete.
The list must contain full paths, and no empty lines.

Here is a post that discusses a couple of easy ways to build the list:

Ok thanks for the info :)

This would work better than the EBOX 4300 if I up the RAM a bit

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... AQ:GB:1123
What you reckon sc0ttman?

Cheers

Hmm... Looks powerful enough, whether or not the hardware support is good is beyond me. Should be *mostly* OK, I guess, nothing too exotic in there..

Again, for the on board graphics chip, OpenGL support may be touch n go... But for that price, is worth a go!

As I'm not a hardware expert, and I haven't tested Puppy 4.2 (or any other Pup) on that system, I would send him a message and tell him you're desperately hoping it supports Puppy Arcade.. He may check it out... Get him to download it and boot it if possible! (Although any Puppy 4.2 would be a fine test)...

I`m scouring ebay trying to get a low cost system with just enough
Power - I notice this has a Via C3 Nehemiah CPU which I dont think is that great..

Keep looking I guess lol 8)

I think the mini ITX box will be fine, with a little extra RAM... I'd go with that as a base. But the other is, of course, more powerful - but if you're only gonna be running MAME, etc, then the mini ITX box would be enough..

Hmm.. That's not very conclusive, is it?

NICE Puplet! I looked into this 2 years ago but never really tested it fully. I have 2 issues =

1. Pwireless doesn't detect my WiFi card (?)

2. USB Mouse doesn't scroll?

(I'm running it on a stock Acer Aspire 5315 Laptop)

Apart from that TOP Puplet!!!!

Any Ideas/help would be greatly appriciated, thanks for all your hard work.

Puppy forever!!!!! :D

A convoluted way...but it often works.

Boot Puppy >>> puppy pfix=ram

so you don't screw up while testing.

Puppy Arcade

I see Vesa mentioned in the write up for Puppy Arcade. Does this mean it won't work with Xorg? My computer doesn't like Vesa.

It first boots into Xvesa, but Xorg works fine. After 1st boot the 'firstrun' dialog pops up, and you can choose Xorg or Xvesa, and your resolution.

But you could update firstrun (from shinobar) to the latest version, as it would make Puppy Arcade boot straight into Xorg instead.

Designing a retro 'console'

#34 Post by gedditoffme »

G'day all,

I am working on converting an old Acer Extensa 2000 laptop into a retro 'console', similar to http://www.instructables.com/id/Build-a ... do-NES-PC/

The laptop has Celeron 2.8GHz CPU, but not much RAM (I think 702MB -basing it off an old DxDiag from shortly before it failed). I remember it ran (3-4 yrs ago) slowly sometimes, and hot, but that was Windows XP, so am hoping the more lightweight Puppy Arcade will run better. I'd like to be able to play up to PS1 or N64 games.

My laptop has a faulty hard drive (the reason I stopped using it). I have now ordered a cheap replacement, but if I understand LiveCD - I can start testing it now if I burn Puppy Arcade to a CD and boot it?

I don't have much experience with linux (though did use a Xandros EEE for 6 months while travelling), so this post is just to reassure myself this will work. And also to ask for help when I stuff up in a few weeks once I have the parts I need :P

So does it include working emulators for all the common systems, or will I need to track them down separately?
Does it boot quickly (I want the proper console experience - playing within a few seconds of turning the switch on)?
Would it run faster than Windows XP?
Does it support a full range of USB controllers (bought some dirt cheap knockoffs from eBay)? Are they easy to set up?
How does it compare with similar front ends for Windows (eg: GameEx looks pretty good too - http://www.gameex.net/)?
