I have a Thinkpad 600E, with a PCMCIA network card. I can't get the CS sound card to work under Linux (Puppy or Ubuntu). When I run alsacfg, everything goes well until it runs alsamixer, when I get the following error message:
Loading driver...
Starting sound driver: snd-cs46xx /lib/modules/2.4.29/sound/pci/cs46xx/snd-cs46xx.o.gz: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.29/sound/pci/cs46xx/snd-cs46xx.o.gz: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.29/sound/pci/cs46xx/snd-cs46xx.o.gz failed
/lib/modules/2.4.29/sound/pci/cs46xx/snd-cs46xx.o.gz: insmod snd-cs46xx failed
done
ERROR: Could not load ALSA drivers
Setting default volumes...
Is this due to an IRQ conflict? any ideas?
Thanks

alsa salsa
When using alsa with newly booted puppy. I noticed while listening to my favorite stream that there was a crackling noise. I then downloaded opensound system from opensound.com
& used it. No crackling noise.
So this could be a bug withing alsa ? Mind you I have cs4236b on-board soundchip

Heaven is on the way, until then let's get the truth out!
Thinkpad 600E sound problem - Solved
This may be useful for any other ThinkPad users. Go into the ThinkPad setup menu (press F1 whilst booting), click on the QuickBoot icon and disable QuickBoot. Exit and boot Puppy normally.
This then removes a lot of error messages when booting Puppy, relating to parport0. Run the ALSA setup wizard in Puppy, and select probe legacy ISA. It will find the CS4235 sound card (well it does on my machine), and everything works.
It's as simple as that
