Updated to VirtualBox 4.1.16

Having FTP issues with one of my mirrors, but the other seems fine. I'll just link the working mirror for now.

Haven't made a package yet for Puppy 301 and 400, but the rest of the 4-series as well as Lucid, Slacko, and the latest Racy and Wary have packages available. I may also add packages for a few other versions in the next few days, and if I do I'll update this post with a quick note.

Thanks @TheAsterisk! and @Shinobar.

I am just getting to a point where I would like to host a VM environment to do PUPs testing. I would like to get a good start at doing such WHEN I saw this post.

For my clarification, does this mean that if I use any 1 of the 7 distros mentioned, I will NOT have to download kernels or DEVXs?

And, is there a description or manual or information tailored to just Puppy Linux VM operations (host and Guest) somewhere?

Thanks in advance

Sorry about my sporadic and prolonged absences. Some rather serious health issues in the family, I'm afraid.

You are correct. For those listed Puppy versions, the SFS is good-to-go out-of-the-box, excepting (maybe) high-performance graphics drivers, or maybe SDL libraries. No need for the DEVX or kernel sources, though.

Not that I know of, but I can search around a bit later this weekend.

Thankyou so much for your virtualbox pets! With Puppy Linux and VBox I can now run a VM straight off my USB stick without ever touching the host computer's HD. Have spent many hours this week trying different combos and can say without doubt this was the easiest way to do it. I have stored my virtual machine on a FAT32 partition of the USB stick so can even run it from my Windows VirtualBox install when connected to my home PC. (This needs to be the first partition on the stick, otherwise Windows won't see it)

The only issue with using FAT32 is the 4Gb restriction on the VDI. But I got a cut-down XP distro running pretty fast with 512Mb RAM allocation. If you give the FAT32 partition a Label in GParted you can then put a script in your Startup folder like "mount -L label /mnt/myfat" to ensure the VirtualBox config files don't get confused if the drive id of the FAT partition(e.g. sda/sdb etc..) changes when it is mounted on different hosts.

How about formating ntfs for the 1st partition on the USB device?

Some 64-bit VirtualBox 4.1.18 packages for FATDOG64 and LighthousePup have been added!

My access to 64-bit hardware is still a bit unpredictable, but I have managed to make packages for FATDOG64 versions 521 and 601, and for LighthousePup 514-B4. I just finished uploading them a short time ago, and they should now be listed in my packages guide, too.

I'll add this information to the main post.

ADDED some 'preview' packages for 4.2.0 RC2

As it's not a stable release, I won't include it in my main post or overall guide pages, but it should be visible and available from either of my mirrors, linked below.

UPDATED to VirtualBox release 4.1.22

ADDED some 'preview packages for VirtualBox 4.2.0 RC4

All packages, stable and pre-release, are now included in the packages guide.

I'm probably going to remove some of the older packages from my mirrors soon, but will retain those packages made for Puppy versions which have no newer packages available.

(Let me know if anyone needs a particular older package. I'll keep some local copies for at least a week if re-uploading is necessary.)

Thank you for these. :D You've made VirtualBox a lot easier for many Puppians! Although Lighthouse64 has a System Tool to d/l and install VBox, it requires the large combined devX/kernel src SFS. I'm assuming your Pets do not--a big help for those without a reliable broadband connection, or who prefer not to install an SFS.

UPDATED to VirtualBox release 4.2.0
I'll remove the 4.2.0 release candidates, but keep 4.1.22 available, just in case Oracle has snuck in any bugs or regressions.

That's right, my packages should not require the DEVX module, assuming everything works as intended and tested. (The only funny spot was that I think Fatdog 601 uses TXZ compression for dot-pets, instead of TGZ. Made for some confused fun the first time I tried to unpack them!)
Anyway, happy to help out where I can! Thanks for the kinds words, TaZoC!

Hello

VirtualBox was failing with a thud in Slacko-5.3.6.5 Beta2 and through the persistence of CatDude it now works.

I am speculating that it has to do "kmod", the new replacement for module-init-tools. The pet is patched with this line @line 250 in /virtualbox-4.2.0_src.install/opt/VirtualBox/src/vboxhost/vboxdrv/Makefile

Code: Select all

-DIN_SUP_R0 -DVBOX -DRT_WITH_VBOX -DVBOX_WITH_HARDENING -DFORTIFY_RUNNING
Also, modprobe -l $MODULE fails with modprobe: invalid option -- 'l' but this is not fatal and isn't patched. This is definitely to do with kmod.

Here is the patched pet. http://www.smokey01.com/01micko/pet_pac ... ched-s.pet
md5<-- 2243dbfe7195661fc40531a694d91e02 virtualbox-4.2.0_src.install_patched-s.pet

I don't know what the behaviour will be like outside of Slacko Beta, ymmv. It will likely suit pemasu's dpup based on wheezy (NOT exprimo!!!) as that ships with kmod too.

Hope this is useful to someone.
Cheers

UPDATED the 32-bit Puppies' packages to VirtualBox version 4.2.2. 64-bit packages will be up soon, and Slacko 5.3.6.5-beta support is forthcoming (see above, below).

EDIT: Support for Precise Puppy 5.4 is also on its way. (I only just found out about the final release a moment ago!)

Thanks, 01micko. CatDude sent me a separate PM with the same information as to where and how to patch. I only got the message after I finished packaging up all the 32-bit version of VirtualBox 4.2.2 for the usual Puppies, but I do plan to try out the patch both on Slacko-5.3.6.5 and on some older Puppies. If it works well everywhere, I'll just modify and re-upload the "src.install" dot-pet, and make a "vboxdrv" package for the beta as I normally would. Otherwise, I can make a special installer for the newer Pups that will/may ship with kmod, and just add some more fun to my HTML guide(s).

I'll post any pertinent updates once I can.

Added a VBox 4.2.2 package for Precise Puppy 540
tiangeng wrote:Would you build Virtualbox3.2.8 for Precise5.4?

I can certainly try.
Honestly, my first priority for VBox is to get 4.2.2 running for the Slacko 540 beta, and seeing how I can most easily and elegantly account for it and all the other puppies in the "src.install" package. (That, and I still have to update my JRE and JDK packages to the latest versions.) That being said, I'd be happy to try to get VBox 3.2.8 (or even a more recent 3-series release) running for Precise 540 once I've addressed that issue.

As always I'll update here when possible.
