I have an older sony vaio desktop with a dell monitor that I have been running Ubuntu Karmic on for ages. I installed the GEforce video card and have had nothing but trouble since, even after removing it. (Kernel panic, resolution difficulty and now a completely crashed xorg that I have Yet to recover) I used first the legacy driver and then the 173. 173 worked well for awhile then simply crashed.
I'm thinking of switching the sony over to Lucid pup - I love my other puppy machine, My question - if I use Lucid pup on it what is the probability that I'll have the same difficulties if I install the FX5500? Anyone have an educated guess or experience with it?
thanks in advance

edited to add - I discovered that the crash was caused by the fact that virtualbox and nvidias newer drivers seem to be incompatible - hoping there is a suitable workaround
