Which Puppy to select for updated equipment

#1 Post by rincon155 »

Which Puppy version is best suited for updated equipment? I have a custom media tower: MSI motherboard 760GM-P21 (FX), AMD FX 4-Core Black Edition, model FX-4100, 8 Gig RAM, two HDD, one with Windows 7, 64 bits, (1TB) and the other with PCLinuxOS KDE (320 GB), dual boot. My plan is to have Puppy with the save file in the HDD where I have Windows.

I have used Slacko Puppy and Lucid Puppy with excellent results in outdated equipment. I enjoy both which are especially useful in recoveries. I am not a PC expert, just a home user eager to learn. Thank you.

Not sure what to suggest as there is so much variety.

You could base your decision on the latest kernel and then pick a build that uses that.

Is there a listing of all Puppys with their main characteristics, to verify their kernels?

In any case, Lupu 528.005 is very stable and easy to use, IMHO. In case of doubt, or without additional information related to other Puppy Derivatives, I might opt for it.

All the ISO's in this section should have details in the 1st post or title eg

Dpup Exprimo 5.X.3.4.2.9 with 3.4.2 kernel

if not, they will tell you what they are based on eg

Manna OS.001 update2 last remaster on Slacko 533 ( ISO )

Slacko Puppy 5.3.3 has Linux kernel 3.1.10

As your computer can handle 64-bits, you might want to try Fatdog64-600b1,
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=79001 or Lighthouse 64 5.14.2 Beta 4, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=74572. Although Fatdog is newer, I prefer Lighthouse which handles more like other Puplets.
Despite that my computer can run a 64-bit OS, and I think jemimah's Saluki, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=73687 is the most innovative and provides the best vehicle for customization, until recently Lupu 5.28.005, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 054#622054, has been the OS I regularly used. Over the last few weeks, however, I find myself choosing to boot into one of the Precise Puppies for several reasons. (a) I haven't found a Lupu pet which it wouldn't run; (b) it appears to run faster than Lupu, perhaps because its newer kernel can make better use of my hardware; and (c) being based on Ubuntu binaries, I've been able to install a couple of apps from Ubuntu's repos when pets weren't available.
The foregoing should not be taken as a criticism of either Exprimo, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=76247 or slacko 5.33 Final, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=76279 or Slacko- next cycle -alpha, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=80180. Each is a really great OS. It's just that I think I understand working with Ubuntu binaries better, and so gravitate to the Puplets which use them.
Despite the "beta" designation of Fatdog64 and Lighthouse64, both are seasoned OSes. And the Precises, although expected to have some rough edges, have been fully functional.

You can usually find which kernel is used on the first page of the thread of a Puppy's development.

But the best advice I can give you is to burn a couple of CD's and find out for yourself which Puplet works best with your computer, your objectives, and the way you operate.

mikeslr: Thank you very much for your detailed post. I will take your advice and will burn several Puppy Derivatives for 64-bit OS. Regards.
P.S.: before your post I tried Slacko 5.3.3 with its save-file installed in HDD and it is working fine.

I tried FatDog 64 - 601 Firefox and LightHouse 64 5.14-B4 Mariner and this one suited very well for my hardware. I am impressed of the performance of LightHouse Mariner.

Thank you very much for your orientation.
