Pretty hard to guess, since you gave no information about the modem or anything else. Which Puppy? What brand and model of modem? What ISP? Is there a wireless router involved, or what?

Have you used that modem with windows or another linux? If not, perhaps you haven't set up the correct profile in it yet? Password, network, etc.

Once my modem profile is right, all I need to change in the default PupDial screen is to set the phone number to *99# (I leave PupDial's username, password, etc., etc., at their default filler values.)

alftabot, I sometimes have this also with my wireless connection.
Mostly it goes away by itself.
Sometimes I have to re-configure.

Shep, a wireless connection isn't a dial-up connection.
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).
