Logitech Mouseman Wheel is generally considered a 'top end' device, but it misbehaves with 504 - usual thing, uncontrollable tracking, etc.
This is new!

gcmartin: I cannot replicate the problem. The default setting in Preferences>Files:Encodings is ISO-8859-1. This works without any problem for me. I also tried opening a file with UTF-8 encoding with Geany set for ISO-8859-1 but, again, there was no problem.

Perhaps I should add that I have Wary set to use UTF-8 (en_GB.utf8 in my case.)

gcmartin: Someone else raised the same issue in another thread but did not make clear which version of Puppy was being used:

There was no response to his post.

@Terryphi et al

Explanation: I wrote a text file using Geany. Dragged and dropped it into Abiword (Desktop icon "Write") to spell check and further edit text file. Then I dragged it back from Abiword replacing the contents in Geany screen. When I went to save the Geany contents, I got the error. To save it as a text file, I had to go back to Abiword and save it there.

Before going back to Abiword, I ATTEMPTED to drag and drop the Geany text into a forum page I was working on. This DID NOT WORK either. What I got on the forum screen was the 1st 2 words of the text file.

Seems that the problem could be related to drag and drop. OR it could be related to some problem with some hex-code being buried in the file by Abiword. I'm not sure. Or ...

If there is some test, like locale setting (how would I find this?) that you want more info on, ask with some details, and I will gather whatever you request.

Hope this helps.
P.S. I run LiveCD. This is Wary 5.04rc and there are NO package(PETs) installed.

It occurs to me after some reading of problems. I don't know this:
  • How to check and change "locale settings"
  • How to check and change "System Fonts"
  • Abiword on my LiveCD has selective problems displaying character representations on the screen (although this has been a problem since I started with Puppy years ago). Sometimes I have screen areas where characters are blank, even though they exist in the file. and moving the slider up/down allows me to see the undisplayed chars. ???
You can PM me or you can post back here. If you want to move this to a more appropriate place, I'll understand.

Thanks in advance for any explanations

I am a copy and paste man rather than a drag and drop man but I have done what I think you described with no apparent problem - the text was not chopped or garbled and did not produce an error in Geany.

I may be misleading you with the locale issue because it is a current obsession of mine. ;) If you want to see what your locale settings are just type locale into a terminal window and press return.

just of note:

after reading terryphi's message I ran locale on my boxes (basically too see what came back :) as I hadn't run that command before).

to my suprise found that with the upgrades I had been reset to en_US and wasn't on my default en_AU, tried it on another box that had not yet been upgraded and the result was right, but after a cd upgrade it had become the same, it reset the locale to the default en_US.

checked my 5.2 and foun d the same must have happened when upgrading 5.1.1>5.2. Interesting!

Geany default

@Barry
Needs default setting of geany.
/root/.config/geany/geany.conf at [geany] section:

Code: Select all

pref_editor_default_new_encoding=UTF-8

I think Shinobar helped Barry with this, similarly, before. anyway here's my loclale

Code: Select all

# locale
LANG=en_US
LC_CTYPE="en_US"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US"
LC_TIME="en_US"
LC_COLLATE=en_US
LC_MONETARY="en_US"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US"
LC_PAPER="en_US"
LC_NAME="en_US"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US"
LC_ALL=
#
This is from using the same LiveCD running system still running since reporting the problem.

Any other requests that would help anyone?
Hope this helps

Yes, the loss of saved locale on upgrade is a long-standing issue in Puppy. The most annoying consequence is that it messes up the date format in some programs. Good news: Barry is fixing it in latest Wary build.

Yes, I see the error using Shinobar's test despite having Wary and Geany set to use UTF-8.

NicoEdit has no problem with the test. Perhaps general users should be made aware that it is better for basic text editing although Geany is essential for anyone who dabbles in coding, etc.

I always switch geany to UTF-8

When document is not saved with error I change encoding in menu. I thought it was normal.

Internet connection not working.
I can come to the desktop just fine.
But I can't configure my WiFi connection (ipw2100 and tried SNS)
Lucid 520 connects without problem.
As I am in a vacation complex, I don't know which router/access point is used, but Lucid working ok, that shouldn't be the cause probably.
Following is the log.
