After 4 or 5 hours of continuous operation, with a couple idle times of 30 minutes or so, the sound gets corrupted, and finally deteriorates into a two-note loop which can only be fixed by rebooting. HardInfo says audio adapter SiS SI7012 (SiS AC'97 onboard sound). Not a show-stopper, but occasionally a pain.

I'm giving 5.1.2 a whirl on some very old hardware--Sony Vaio Picturebook PCG-CV1N. Crusoe 600mhz CPU and 114 available RAM.

One thing I can't find, and maybe it's not a choice with this setup: I can't seem to find a module for temperature or for thermal so I can monitor temperature in a conky.

Can I do that in Wary 5.1.2?

I guess this is for ttuuxxx. I accidentally acquired a mp4 file and it played okay in MPlayer. But when I played it with VLC Plus Extras, it didn't show video while it played audio. Here is the YT video in question:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTP6z3bHKOc
I am curious whether the general class of mp4 will play with VLC Plus Extras, or is this particular video an oddball. Or perhaps it is the method of capture, via tmp directory.

EDIT: A little more tinkering and it gets funkier. When I select VLC with the "Open With" dialog, the track plays correctly with video and audio. When I "Set Run Action" to VLC, only audio plays in VLC player, and the screen is black (blank),

EDIT2: Meh, something is going on with VLC, behaving sporadically. Only occasionally shows video; more typically a black screen. MPlayer working good. I uninstalled VLC and qt4 package, then re-installed, but no joy.

Answer to my own query:
In VLC, Tools > Preferences > Show settings-All > Video: uncheck 'Overlay video output'

EDIT: Argh, this is not a satisfactory solution.

lilo

A few years ago I reported that wary 5.11
booted with lilo on only one of four
computers. Same problem with wary 5.5,
which cannot find its sfs file with lilo
or even when booting from live CD.
It finds the save file in the same directory.
My lilo is an old version from about 2000.
It works with puppy 4 and tinycore.
Any suggestions other than learning GRUB?

Also the lynx for wary (2.8.7) has
no shttp support so does not work
with duckduckgo or gigablast but
does work with google.

If you are running Wary 5.1.1 and would like to upgrade Seamonkey to version 2.23, please see this thread:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=90882
Before you execute the Seamonkey .pet you should use PPM to install two packages: dbus and dbus-glib

Upgrading to SM 2.23 fixes the annoying, frequent Flash/sound crashes experienced using original SM 2.0.11.

It has been reported that USB keyboard and USB mouse are not detected when Wary 5.1.1 is full-installed. This issue is resolved by appending ADDLIST in /etc/rc.d/MODULESCONFIG as in

Code: Select all

ADDLIST=' ehci_hcd uhci_hcd ohci_hcd usbhid '
to forcibly load missing drivers during boot.

Running Wary 5.1.2, I want to upgrade Xorg from Menu>Setup>Video Upgrade Wizard. When I call the Video Upgrade Wizard, I am presented with a button to install Xorg 7.5. When I click the button, an attempt is made to download Xorg 7.5 from ibiblio. This download fails, even though the file is reportedly there. I need an upgrade in order to change resolution on this computer. Why does this download fail? Is this download failure a fail-safe strategy to keep me from installing a bad driver? Can I download Xorg 7.5 from any source, or is this a Puppy-specific package?
