WINE version 1.1.44, installed as an SFS on Puppy 431 frugal

Rename4u (batch renamer)

A-PDF Info Changer version 1.0

MediaCoder 0.6.1 build 4045

If anything doesn't work, I've yet to encounter it after roughly six or seven months of running these programs with WINE.

I hadn't heard of K-Meleon or mesnews. They look very interesting--K-Meleon, especially, for my 1999 Dell Inpsiron 4000.

I've been using mobipocket (which does not run on Wine) in XP, then reading the *.prc rss files with FBReader. Does mesnews play nice with Linux wifi, etc?

Hello, "TheAsterisk!" and all you wine enthusiasts out there!

I'd say that, as a general rule, 2/3 of the PORTABLE applications offered in the PortableApps ( http://portableapps.com/suite ) and Lupo PenSuite ( http://www.lupopensuite.com/ ) collections will work with wine in any Puppy.

You have to try them out on your set-up, no other way, I guess.

I remember that the special extra small K-Melon (can't remember the v. number) did work under Wine 1.25 (?) did fully work in Puppy4.12 (pretty fast, too!), but worked only partially (unstable) in more recent versions of Wine.

If you're in no hurry :-) , you can use OpenOffice 2.4 under wine in Puppy! It's more a proof of concept that anything else, because the PuppyLinux pets or sfs's run much faster.

As an indication, here's my list of working windows apps under wine 1.36, commented. As I said, it may not work the same on your set-up.
  • ** Writing

    * Text and RTF

    AngelWriter
    Atlantis Nova
    DocConverter
    Doc2rtf
    Roughdraft

    TypeCharge
    word-count

    * other

    RCCalcs
    wincalc (from XP)
xcalc32, v. 272 (not the same as the classic linux one; uses reverse Polish style)

    ** File management

    * general

    ae13
    ultraexplorer (outstanding, even under wine!)
    toucan

    * archivers

    7-zip portable
    IZArc
    peazip
    Universal Extractor

    * defrag (beware: of files only)

    merge
    PhotoFiltre
    Picasa
    pictor
    pixia

    ** Viewers

abracadabra (some bugs under wine, but still good)
    Futurix Imager
Futuris Imager (those two from the same)
    i-view32
XnView Portable (freezes at exit, so you can't save your settings, but all other functions work great)

    ** Internet

httrack (sometimes unstable, but still a better site plucker than the linux version)
    eMule
    FileZillaFTP
    FireFox 3.6.3 (hehehe!)
    nPOPuk (fabulous)
    opera 10.53 (hehehe, again!)
    Thunderbird Portable
TPro (old Out house sink utility)

    ** Games

    abadaba
    BlockGame
    Chess-it!
    ching
    ColorClue
    kyodai
    othello
    solitaire (from XP)
    Reversi
    sistet
    stellarium
    winmine (obviously")

    ** Music and Media

    AIMP2 (unstable)
    Audacity
    CartaMusica
CDex (works fine with proper dlls, etc.)
    FLVPlayer
MusicCubeOne (fabulous ogg/mp3 player from Denmark)
recall (a dictaphone/voice recording utility; very good, even under wine)
screamer radio (XP version # 3.9. Newer v. have problems under wine)
    SMPlayer
    tvbrowser (partially)
vlc (well, under wine, it's more of a proof of concept than anything else; interface slow to set up on screen under wine)

    ** Organizers

    ao32, v. 241 (very old...)
Chaos Manager 2 (useful only with the two simpler interfaces)
    EssentialPM
    GANTT
SN (JBLab's Simple Notes; commercial; good)
    mempad
    taskTome
Total Organizer (the best, whatever the OS, in my opinion)
XDeks95 (old, as the title implies; simple but efficient; locate and bakcup your DAT files, though!)
Year3 (very good for longer term organizing)

    ** Simple Databasing

CSVEd ((the most versatile, whatever the OS, in my opinion)
LibSuite (comes some very useful ready-made categories; limited, but a one-stop kind of thing)
PhoneDeck (does one thing, but very well)
wbrowse & wcreate (if you can find it; very useful for old and not so old DBF databases)
    xml marker
xmlpad (the end of the '90's one from MS; came with Win98SE, I believe.)

    ** Time

    aclock
ACLOCK (not the same as above)
    Calendar
    Digiclock (nice)
dsclock (incomplete; a bit buggy under wine)
    Horloge
ThClock (default is vey nice, but impossible to set options in my language)
WorldTimeClock (older, but extremely useful; very good under wine)
Obviously, this list remains sketchy, 'cause some of those freewares can no longer be found, and I haven't kept a log of my downloads throughout the years. Nevertheless, some are very recent (e.g. Total Organizer) or actively maintained (e.g. CSVEd). And as I said previously, the major collections such as Lupo, etc. are your best bets for reliable wine progs, because they're re-made as portable apps.

Best I can do! Have fun exploring!

K-Meleon is a gecko based browser. When in XP I used it quite often.

MesNews is in my view the best and user-friendly news client and is very configurable.
I use it in windows and now for quite some time in wine.
My connection is wifi and I have no problems.
It uses functions from Internet Explorer. That was a bit of a problem in the beginning, but now not anymore.
I installed IE with winetricks.

Many thanks for the insights. You tempt me to install IE :) Béèm.

musher0, that's an astounding list. I just took a look at Total Organizer. Very impressive--its linking of contacts to tasks to appointments is right from the Sharp Zaurus Classic, the Synergy OS days back in the '90s.

G'day,

In my wine+programs sfs and pet are:

Excel 97
Word97
Roots Magic 4
PAF5
Mailwasher
7Zip
Ocad.

Legacy 6 (as of green_dome's wine-1.2 pet)

What doesn't run properly, or at all, that I'd like to get running include:
Cutepdf Writer
Nero Vision Express

In other words, the programs that I still have to boot up in XP and that, in my hands, are not adequately matched by a Linux equivalent.

Hello, Béèm!

If I didn't know your twisted sense of humour, I'd take that as an insult!

You know why:
in Windows, you have:

* disk and file fragmentation problems
* viruses, spies, worms, rootkits, etc.

which makes any Windows more unstable and risky than Linux.

in Windows, you HAVE TO:

* defrag disks
* use anti-viruses, anti-worms, etc. and update them,

all of which use a lot of your time needlessly.

If you've noticed, the programs in my list are mostly "off-off-Broadway", not "run-of-the-mill", type of Windows programs, I mean specialized, or relatively unknown. Also, if the program you need doesn't exist on Linux, and can run in wine, why not? For example, there are no translation or translation memory programs in Linux, but they do exist on Windows (e.g. CatsCradle) and java (e.g. OmegaT).

So... no, I'm not going to run Windows natively again anytime soon, except for printing (never could get any Puppy to print, 'cause I don't have a linux-compatible printer on this machine), -- and when I run Windows, it's always off-line. (MS already knows enough about my computing habits  through the "feedback" and "backdoors" it had installed in win 98se, winME and winXP.)

wine 1.2-rc4 as .sfs

The only program I use is e-Sword, a Bible software program. But reading all that is mentioned here, I might have to try some others.

I am running wine 1.1.43

For those who do electronics it is useful to know:

Linear's LTSpice works just fine. If you are running on anything but a full install, you will want to set the location of your schematic to be on a real disk. The *.raw file that gets made in that directory is really huge. The nice folks at Linear have made some effort to make it work well under wine. Some people think (including me) that it runs faster under wine than native Windows. Others disagree. I think it may depend on the nature of your hard disk.

ExpressPCB's PCB software works well except for anything that uses the network. This means that you have to pretend you don't have network access and use the manual method for submitting your boards for production by them.

Very good thread thanks for taking the initiative to providing it.

I use Spotify but one need to go into wine set up and then graphics and un tick two ticked boxes there or else it crash. I think it worked for both old and new Spotity program. I have not tested the payed one though.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

I am still using an older wine, wine-1.1.41-i486-sfs4.sfs, because Acrobat 4 doesn't run in newer ones. (this ancient Acrobat, with Quite Imposing, is small, does what I need, and I own it.)

I have also used for years DeepBurner (the best), my old Address Book and Calendar (I hate converting these things), SyncBack, Ocr-Sprint, Porta, and RootsMagic.

I install all these outside the pupsave file in a frugal puppy based on QuirkyNop 1.2.

I didn't always make a note but this is a partial list of what I found works with Wine 1.1.33 in Wary 500:

Complete New World Dictionary (for Win95, 600MB)
Aspire
Get Right (for Win95, even puts icon in Linux tray!)
Savings Bond Wizard
WinRar
WinZip
WhereIsIP
FLV Player
Complex (reader for Oxford ebooks, Dictionary, Bible, etc)
PhotoStudio
AlleyCode
7-zip
Adobe Digital Editions
Irfanview
Fresh Diagnose
Examine32
Bible Plus (for Win98)
Solitaire (from Win98)
Notepad
Wordpad (Write.exe from Win98)
Calculator (from Win98)
Char Map
Thunderbird
Opera
Office 2000 Premium (Word, Excel, etc)

Almost all of these run merely by clicking on the link in Windows without an actual installation by Wine.
Frugal: Knoppix 6.4.4 DVD
USB: DSL 4.4.10
Full: WinXP Pro
Puppy (Feb. 4 - May 12, 2011) led me back to Linux.

i didnt have a list, but warcraft 3 works on wine 1.2.2 (green_dome) on lupu520. Use winetricks for d3dx9 after installing cabextract.pet (google) to install directx.
On console, type
winetricks d3dx9
and installation starts

DBDesigner4

Runs perfectly in Lucid Puppy 5.11 using green_dome's wine 1.2.2 pet. Much better than the outdated Linux version.

Also installed:
Graphics driver from Quickpet
cabextract-1.2 (.pet)
SDL-1.2.13 (.pet)
MDAC installed with winetricks
