Does Puppy Linux exist for the 2300SX? |
|
Hi -
I've been reading the "eBox-2300SX is ready" thread...
Apologies in advance if the answer is right in front of my face, but...
Q: Was Puppy Linux ever successfully ported to the 2300SX?
Q: If so, where can I download a copy?
Q: And, if so, does it support PXE boot?
I have a Spark kit running Windows CE 6.0 ... and I'd *love* to give Linux a try. It's only got 128MB ... and it must have a GUI ... so Puppy would be a very natural fit, if at all possible.
Any suggestions/advice?
Thank you very much in advance,
Paul Santa Maria

googling what you are looking for... first hit =
www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=21864
is that it? if so why did you open this thread instead of posting there... it will just fragment any useful info.

technosaurus -
1. The link you cited is exactly the thread ("eBox-2300SX is ready") I mentioned in my first post.
2. The thread is four years old ... and nothing in the 8 pages gave me any idea whether or not the port actually succeeded. Much less "how".
Sooooo:
Q: Was Puppy Linux ever successfully ported to the 2300SX?
Q: If so, where can I download a copy?
Q: If not, can you give me any pointers as to how I might try building the current version of Puppy?
Thank you in advance .. Paul Santa Maria

Please post to the other thread to bump it so that users who have followed the 2300sx, and may have a working solution by now, will see it come up when they view their posts.
the sx is the killer part ... almost every x86 has an fpu
the how is to recompile everything or at least the kernel with dpi emulation

Hi, technosaurus -
The prevailing feeling on most boards is that it's rude and unproductive to play "pin the tail on the donkey" with old threads. It's called "necromancing". It's usually considered better to post a new thread.
Like I said above, I read the thread on "2300sx ready", and I didn't see anything useful. I also saw the link to www.dmp.com.tw (and actually downloaded it, along with the associated documentation). But it's an older kernel, it's "batteries not included" for any kind of GUI ... and I have zero idea to what extent it may or may not be compatible with Puppy.
The part about "sx is the killer part" was useful. I already knew it, but thank you.
Sooooooo -
I think we can safely say that you don't know whether anybody's successfully ported Puppy to an eBox 2300SX. Or where I might find a pre-built binary. if they have. Fair enough - neither do I
Q: Can you point me to any good references on building Puppy myself, from scratch? References that you've found helpful? Or do I have to Google for it ?
TIA .. PSM

I dont think you can safely say what I dont know, suffice to say by the questions that you are asking, you never bothered to read that thread in its entirety... I try not to make a habit of re-answering questions that have been asked and answered already.
As long as you are "necromancing" a forgotten architecture (you have lots of company here) why stop at a forum thread, its just not that big of a deal here and actually expected or even welcomed. Maybe someone still has a copy of the iso that was posted or the results of the complete tutorial on how to do it yourself. Unless you are giving out a free ebox to test it on, you may be on your own with building/testing a new kernel. The various sources (and notes/patches) are at:
User=p-u-p-p-y
http://bkhome.org/sources/ (remove all "-" in Usr and Pwd)
pwd=l-i-n-u-x
follow the directions in the other thread (you may also want to check out ttuuxxx's thread on 2.14 retro, it is based on an older kernel, but still quite actively maintained and updated)

There's a How To for debian etch here
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=40831
which may give clues for any puppy build
PXE has been focused recently in several threads
see jamesbond's post - 4th down
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=56580
also see
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=485729
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=65232
low ram is likely to be as much of a problem as no fpu
though see also
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=10808
good luck!
