Hello, all.
Would this substitution work with other kernels? E.g., wary's kernel?
Thanks in advance.

Hi.
I understand that. I meant: Can the trick itself work, putting any kernel (not necessarily yours) under any puppy ?
Regards.

Hello, wuxiandianzi.
Just tested your kernel on dpup-484 (the older dpup-Lenny). It boots well but I have no sound, no access to eth0, and it will not fetch the dpupsave personal sfs file.
I will try possible solutions:
* you have a solution for the sound card on page 1.
* someone has suggested something for ethernet card.
As to the pupsave file:
* Should the pupsave file be
a) in xz format?
b) at the first level of the drive and not in a folder?
Finally, what do I do with the "pet" file you provided?
Where should I unpack it?
And when? In the puppy (in this case, dpup), after I am in it?
And then reboot?
Sorry if I sound ignorant, I am very new to using kernels directly.
Thank you in advance for any information. And of course thank you generally for this interesing idea.

I guess I'm old-school but I do this kind of stuff manually.....
I'm posting from Insidious 002 with the new 2.6.38.2 kernel.Internet, sound and display were all working correctly on the initial boot.
VGA compatible controller : Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller
Multimedia audio controller : Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER
Ethernet controller : Intel Corporation 82562EZ 10/100 Ethernet Controller
I like it when things work good from the start.

Went ahead and did a manual frugal install on the first computer (Intel). Only problem, would not create a save file.Exited without saving.
Took a shortcut and copied an existing inpusave.3fs into the directory and it was detected on reboot. Everything appears to be working.

Pemasu:
I have tested using the manual method and your kernel boots OK but there is no sound and it cannot find eth0 wired connection.
Here is card information:
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 01)
Alsa gives this error:
modinfo: could not open /lib/modules/2.6.38.2/kernel/sound/core/snd.ko
Checking I see that there is no sound directory in /lib/modules/2.6.38.2/kernel.

Terryphi. About your rtl gigabit eth. There is kernel module rtl8169 only. I could not find kernel module with your specs.
I am now fixing my mother laptop. It will take couple of days I have time to check again kernel specs. It would help if you know the kernel module name which works with your eth aka rtl816?.
About sound. Lol. Maybe I have missed some base sound module. Sound worked out of box for me, so I thought it was ok and didnt much check the specs.

pemasu: Problem solved. The files from the 2 sfs files did not integrate properly so I did not have the necessary drivers, etc. I have now integrated them manually and sound and eth0 connection work.

Terryphi. Great news. I suppose it is rtl8169 you are using ?
It sounds the compile is quite workable.
My kernel pet is organized as it is used with woof. To use it to update your existing puppy, I recommend to extract it and replace the needed files and folders. I am unfortunately woof builder so I havent tested manual replacing myself. I would use edit sfs app probably for replacing files and folders.
Kernel source sfs is done so that you can start to compile extra modules with it straight.
I have done make clean and make prepare already.
I have hyperthreading and support for multiprocessors also included. So newer i3, i5, i7, atom and pentium 4 machines have benefit with my kernel. Rfkill is also enabled, so you can shut your wireless if you want. Saves some battery also. Vgaswitcheroo was not enabled, cause i dont use it and it has some extra dependencies I havent tracked down for sure.

pemasu: I have been testing for the last hour with wuxiandianzi's kernel and Wary 511. I assume that the sfs file integration problem is common to both your kernels. I will test with yours later following the same procedure. What I say below may not apply to yours.
One odd thing I am seeing is in the Boot manager configuration. Loaded additional SFS files show as not loaded although they are present and work. Presumably this would make unloading them a problem!
Also, my webcam is not now found.

Thank you very much!
I find that only r8169 module drivers
you can try modprobe r8169.if though
I will compile r8168-8.022.00 driver, thank you!
I will re-upload soon |
Thank you, wuxiandianzi . |
