Nvidia 260.19.44

#1 Post by Flash858 »

I just upgraded my video card from an 8500 GT to a GT 430 (Nvidia), and now I have 2 broken installations (5.1.1 and Lighthouse) of Puppy. I am starting to get the heebie-jeebies living ONLY in Ubuntu as I miss Puppyland, and the last time I attempted to compile a .pet from an Nvidia run file, it was not pretty (I think I killed the Xserver for my entire zip code-my phone was ringing off the hook).

I have already tried the pet of the latest driver I could find (260.19.12), as well as trying to run the .run file, and both were a no-go.

If someone could do this for me, or point me to the pet if it is packaged already, I would be forever in your debt.

Thanks in advance!

How about pointing me to directions for creating a .pet from the .run file?

I think you will need to compile it first, before you could attempt to make a .pet

Simply stating: 5.1.1 and Lighthouse does not really help anybody.

Maybe if you give more specific information on what Puppy versions you are running,
someone may be kind enough to make a .pet for you.

I took a wild guess at 5.1.1 being lupu-511 and tried compiling it for you,
but as i do not have a suitable graphics card it failed to build it. (i only have an FX5200)

So, until someone else can build it for you, why not give it another go yourself. :?:

Assuming you have Frugal installs,
you just need the devx and kernel-source files for your particular Puppies.

Thanks for the reply Cat. As it is a self-running file, and not a Tarball, I just do not know HOW to build it myself, or I would. If you could guide me, I would be most appreciative. Running LUPU 511 indeed, and Lighthouse 5.3, both frugal.

I attempted to run it in LHP, and encountered some missing dependencies for building it. When I got gslapt to install them from the terminal, I had a version conflict (I wish I could remember what the package was, I do remember I needed 4.3 to build in that kernel, gslapt gave me 4.4, and I could not find 4.3 in the repositories).

So anyway, any guidance would be helpful. I have only built like 2 pets ever, it was about 2 years ago, and I have quite frankly forgotten how to do it.
Thanks!

Hi flash858

I've never done it myself, and can't have a go at it because i don't have the right card. The steps you need to follow are here in catdudes post.(scroll down a bit) http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=54886

You will need the kernel headers installed for the kernel you are using. I believe that these are the kernel headers for lupu511 but you had better check yourself (use hardinfo in menu/system)
http://www.smokey01.com/01micko/lupu_ke ... atched.sfs
name=puppy pas=linux

This might be the lighthouse kernel headers, i found it on the lighthouse pup site, again check it matches your kernel
http://www.lhpup.org/sfs/500/Kernel_src ... .2-LHP.sfs

tell us how you get on

i forgot that you will probably need the devx for your puppy version aswell
lupu 511 devx here

lighthouse..... maybe this one.. if not check the lighthouse site for yours.

That was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a million! I will be attacking this tomorrow with a Fresh Install of LHP...

One last question: After I get the driver injected into the kernel, where are the instructions on making a .pet?

I am excited! :)

hi flash

i actually had to do a manual driver install yesterday after posting that info for you. It was the first time i've ever done it, and it went really smoothly.

I've yet to make a pet out of the install, but i've found this info
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... d2eaf33474
it doesn't seem to auto configure the xconfig though.

It might be worth looking inside one of the official lucid nvidia driver pets, to see how they handle doing that. By opening a terminal where the pet is,and typing

Code: Select all

pet2tgz nameofmy.pet
you can then unzip it and compare it to your own

goodluck

I went ahead and made a pet. The guide above would of actually missed some stuff. This is what i did..

boot live with 'puppy pfix=ram' and install the 'sfs installer' from here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=44765 be sure to get the right one for your puppy.

Use the sfs installer to install the devx and the kernel headers, then goto the menu/setup/remaster puppy live cd. and create a remastered puppy. it will include the devx & kernel headers. I then manually installed the remastered puppy. putting the new main puppy.sfs, the vmlinuz and the initrd.gz
into a folder. then adding a new menu.1st entry for it.

I then booted the remastered puppy , and installed the nvidia driver following the instructions above. Once done, i shut down and created a savefile.

I booted again, using puppy pfix=ram, and then mounted the savefile i had created by clicking on it. Being the only thing installed when the savefile was created makes it pretty obvious what is part of the driver (there are a few other bits'n'bobs that aren't driver related). But they are quite easy to spot ,Especially when used with the methods in the above post.

I had unzipped an official lucid nvidia driver.pet. And i used the pinstall.sh and puninstall.sh from that in my pet. Not sure about the merits of this but it seemed to work for my snowpuppy nvidia driver.pet,.. snowpuppy is lucid based. This may not work on lighthouse.

666philb - If you have created a pet, could you share it with me? So far my efforts have been futile. Killing xserver after xserver...

I have gone about this the way you and Catdude have described, and also via the standard way suggested by nvidia, and I just keep coming up short.

Throwing my hands up for now, and will wait until that driver is in lupu as an option. I am not trying to run compiz here, just get 1920x1080 ot of my 27" monitor, and no driver will give me that, not even the vesa.

:(

hi Flash858

No wonder you gave up!!! what problematic puppy's! Since my last post, i had installed that driver on alsorts of puppy's with no real problems.. but those two, where horrid.

I couldn't get anywhere with lighthouse, after multiple attempts the driver said that it had installed, but it hadn't.. You'll have to post on the lighthouse thread to ask for that.

However after some tinkering i managed to get the 511lucid driver to install, and make a pet out of it. It seems to work fine on mine, glx gears and google earth working and full 1920x1080 resolution. Although i am able to get that anyway with the 260.19.12.pet. maybe because my card is older.

I hope it work's for you.. you can download the lucid 511 nvidia-2.6.33.2-x86-260.19.44.pet here.......

666philb - I appreciate all of your effort, however, on a fresh frugal install of 5.1.1, this too failed, with the same results I got, save for the fact that I did see the new driver in the list when running xorgconfig.

I will give it a go on 5.2.5 and see what happens...

sorry to here that, .... as a plus though, manual installation on 525 shouldn't be problematic. ........Hopefully :)

The bodge to get it to install on 511 was to go to /sbin/ and remove the 'depmod' symlink (keep it as you will need to put it back after) then right click on the 'depmod-FULL' binary, choose link and name it 'depmod' So you have a new depmod symlink, linking to depmod-full. the installer worked then. after which you can put the original depmod symlink back. As stated above, you shouldn't need to do this on 525

I am begining to think I picked the wrong card, and as the driver is so new (for Linux), only the major distros seem to be recognizing it out of the box. No luck with either of your pets you posted the other day on fresh frugal installs, and no luck installing the manufacturer's driver on lupu525.

Every time I think I am getting close, I get to the nvidia-xconfig (I even see the nvidia control panel in the menu), run it "successfully", only to find out X is again, sadly, broken, and I am left with a distorted 1042x768 vesa driven display, or no X whatsoever until I reboot. With 511, I even had to delete my save file to get X to start.

At this point, I am at a loss, and while it is the first major issue I have evewr had with Puppy, it is a biggie!

Patiently waiting for that driver to be included in a kernel near me... ;)

One last stab...

#16 Post by Flash858 »

So I installed a fresh frugal copy of lupu525. In the package manager, I noticed a 5.1.1 version of the 260.x driver. I booted back into a fresh frugal copy of 5.1.1 and checked there, only to find out the driver was NOT for some reason available there.

So back to 525, downloaded it (did not install), and copied it from the temp directory to another partition. BACK AGAIN, to 511, and installed the .pet, ran nvidia-xconfig, then xorgconfig, and probed.

No help. The "OK" resolution settings cut off at 1024x768 again, and everything higher stated it was OK for monitor, but maybe not OK for card- same as I was getting before. Testing X of course reverted to the 1024 setting, and I was right back where I started.

The driver (non-free) provided in Debian, Ubuntu, SUSE, Fedora, and their children all seem to work. Not out of the box of course, but after installing the driver and rebooting, I get full resolution, 3D, Compiz, etc.

As I am completely at a loss here, I can only assume there is some inherent incompatibility with the 430 card and Puppy, and that all future efforts will be otiose, at best.

So, I am giving up. Throwing in the towel. This is just never going to fly Orville...

Any suggestions on the highest end Nvidia card that will definitely work would be appreciated. For my other purposes (Compiz/Unity in Ubuntu, Photoshop acceleration in Windows), I need one with at least the specs the 430 has, and I am OK with dropping a few bucks, as I can always use this card in a Windows box without issue).

I have seen Waterloo, and it is the Nvidia GT 430 card...
