Another Puppy Phone suggestion Subject description: Conform with the trend |
|
I have heard about Puppy on tablets or on smartphones.
I heard iPhone os was(?) based on FreeBSD. Android is based on linux.
Samsung has LIMO Phone Linux Mobile Phone.
I have heard it is open system for anyone. Can Puppy be rooted inside there?
It would be great if anyone made it possible.

Samsung Presents a Linux-Based Smart phone OS
December 15th, 2009
Advertisment
Not to be outdone by Google and its Android, Samsung plans to launch linux-based smartphone their self-made operating systems. Named as Bada, drawn from the Korean language, meaning “sea”, this OS will be a very open platform. According to Samsung, if a developer can write a program for them, then bada will be able to run it. So, this operating system resembles Maemo that belongs to Nokia and Limo Project from linux Mobile foundation.
Samsung Presents a Linux-Based Smart phone OS
Bada will be ready to be shipped in the first half of 2010. It is estimated that there also will be a centralized-application store that offers software that can be online-downloaded for all versions of this brand-new operating system– the same action performed by Apple.
For your information, samsung phones still use the Symbian and Windows Mobile platform for now. But with the presence of Bada, both operating systems can be less adopted by the South Korean vendor. Further information about bada can be accessed through www.bada.com.

I almost forgot.
Cheap Chinese Linux based phones are everywhere.
Such as ZTE.
Nice match to make a toy without spending a fortune, isn't it?

But Bada OS is as different from standard GNU as Android is different from standard GNU?
It is Open as you can compile from source but is it open as in being root?
Android allow you to be root only if you Jailbreak it but sure there are a few exception firms that do allow you to go root but all the others discourage it wildly even changing to a new version to stop the people going root.
So I trust Bada is not allowing root without you doing a hack and them not going to be happy about it.
Am I wrong?
Iphone is even worse.

I just checked on that Bada business. How come I never heard of that?
Anyway, I couldn't find a single mention of "Linux" anywhere on that site. Many pieces of news and press releases spotted by Google mention Linux, but not the official site.
Wikipedia says:
| Quote: | | Bada, as Samsung defines it, is not an operating system itself, but a platform with a kernel configurable architecture, which allows the use of either a proprietary real-time operating system (RTOS) kernel, or the Linux kernel.[1] According to copyrights displayed by Samsung Wave S8500, it uses code from FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD, although other phones might use Linux instead. |
The official Web site offers an SDK for developers, but guess what, it only runs on one platform/operating system. I will give you a burned match if you have the magical powers to guess what it is...

* Microsoft Windows® XP, Windows® Vista, or Windows® 7 operating system |
Ah, their sense of humor...

So, it;s not as easy as I thought.
Even iPhone can be hacked(jailbreak) and that lead me to think that LIMO which is now bada OS would be easy to be switched with my lovely Puppy.
I thought about modding cheap Chinese PMPs because some of them are based on Linux.
That would make the cheapest most affordable computer and can be detached when need to carry it.
However, it requires firmware writer and some old old forgotten low level hardware knowledge.(remind me of the old days of machine language ROM writer...)
It was my wild idea but someone with sufficient knowledge can carry it further and may make something.
Hope the idea can inspire somebody....

My wild idea is maybe too wild and most unrealistic.
What did Barry do to create Puppy. He took Linux and then used what he liked and when it did not have what he liked he learned enough to make it into what he liked.
That is what "us" could or should do with these hardware software cheap computers or smartphones. That will not make Puppy out of them but it would make them behave as we want?
So groups like www.cyanogenmod.com and others like them try to root them and that way make them open to use "free" shared software.
It does not look like Puppy on teh screen but their way if thinking that if it does not have what one want then one try to give it what one want.
