Remobo - create and use private networks

Remobo is a tool for creating private networks. This was found on http://alternativeto.com, as an alternative to TeamViewer.

Every registered Remobo User has their own "Instant Private Network" (IPN). For example, when a Remobo User Alice logs in from any computer that has the Remobo program installed, that computer becomes a member in Alice's IPN. Alice can log in from multiple computers at the same time, and all the logged-in computers are members of Alice's IPN, which means all Alice's computers are connected to each other as if they were on the same Local Area Network (LAN).

A computer is a member of a Remobo User's IPN only for the duration of their Remobo login session. For example, when Alice logs off Remobo from any of her computers, that computer is taken off of Alice's IPN network. And no data about Alice is left behind on that logged-off computer.

A Remobo User can also share their IPN with their friends. For example, when a Remobo User Alice invites her friend Bob (which must also be a Remobo User) as a "Buddy" in Alice's Remobo Network, all computers that Alice & Bob are currently logged-in become members of the IPN, which means all Alice's and Bob's computers are connected to each other, as if all these computers are on the same LAN.

The "Buddies" of a Remobo User do NOT see each other through this specific Remobo User. Example, if Alice has both Bob and Carl as her Remobo Buddies, then all Alice's and Bob's computers are connected to each other, and all Alice's and Carl's computers are connected to each other, but NONE of Bob's computers are connected to ANY of Carl's computers, unless they are Remobo Buddies of each other.

I did not compile it, but it loads up fine in Puppy 4, and so should work fine in most versions of Puppy Linux.

I have only loaded it up, and have not fully tested it. Please do ask me how to make it work, I have not tried it yet.

In the name of all that is good and decent in this world, nobody use this program.

Although it's advertised as a way to share files or control a remote computer, it has nothing but Instant Messaging. Took me about two hours of assuming that I must have done something wrong before I came across a thread in the forums at Remodo.com.

Hapless User One: I just installed Remobo on Ubuntu 11.04 x64 (yes I installed the x64 version). When I’m googling what to do, it’s saying that these applications show be showing up already, but I’m not seeing them (other than instant message)

Jeff the Admin: There’s only one Remobo App, Instant Messaging, in current version of v0.50.6. The next version, of v0.60 will have more App restored, which will be released by end of month. Stay tuned.

Hapless User Two, posting 2 months later: Is this the first version of remobo or are there earlier versions i can download as i need the other features…….

That "next release" was promised about three months ago in that thread, and there have been no meaningful updates since.

It's an absolute turd as it relates to its advertised (yet non-existent) capabilities. Avoid it like the plague.

(To be clear, I mean no offense to you, sc0ttman. It's not your fault their operation is so very egregiously mismanaged.)

It should still create a VPN which could be used by other programs (e.g. I guess pnethood) though, shouldn't it?
Isn't the problem just that it is missing the other built-in apps which sc0ttman didn't mention?

So using VPN it would be safer than many other approaches or what?

That remobo guys then can read everything we write through their backdoor?
