Kernel Testing
OK, my turn to ask a noobie question....how does one test a kernel?
I have far too many old PCs, including some old SCSI stuff, so thanks for that - I may have to dig some out, I've been downsizing....old servers use too much power, and make too much noise
Am I correct in saying this kernel only works for LUPU 5.25, and if so, how do I do whatever needs doing?

Hello,
The kernel must be built in from the start..
These kernel pets are only for building with woof...
But they are not limited to any particular puppy..
Mine is 5.25 based, but there is also an spup, and IcePuppy (5.11), based on them...I have woofed a T2 pup from 2.6.38.4 as well..

Hello,
@pemasu, thank you for these...
And I fully welcome, and in fact need, your input here..
You are much more knowledgeable on this than I..
I just started this to steer the other kernel builds somewhere beyond tying up your Icepuppy thread and playdayz EZWoof thread....
@Aitch, if you want to try it, 5.39 is almost 5.25 exactly, albeit the addition of FF, the Intel stuff, and a few toys...Beyond that, and the new kernel, it is the same...I just gave it a 5.39 name cause there are already several 5.25xx names afloat...
Should I get it to where I am satisfied, I may give it its own name and thread...
Probably the last "Lupu" thing I`m gonna do...
Jay....

PUP539 and SAMBA
Thanks @Puppyluvr for your assistance. (I did pick up on why you started this last week). Great work
I have had success with the following:
Running JamesBond's Netboot on a separate PC, I am able to boot several of my PCs over the LAN without going from ISO to CD. In each case, I had no video issues getting to your PUP539 desktop(s).
In each case, I
These systems are fast. Performance is smooth.
Hope this helps

Running JamesBond's Netboot on a separate PC, I am able to boot several of my PCs over the LAN without going from ISO to CD. In each case, I had no video issues getting to your PUP539 desktop(s).
In each case, I
- reset the hostname+timezone+numlock in Personlize Settings at desktop start
- open a terminal, type "retrovol", and Unmute audio
- used QuickPET desktop icon to Update PPM
- used PPM to add SAMBA 3.5.6 to the systems
- tailored SAMBA for simple sharing of a folder and printers on each system
These systems are fast. Performance is smooth.
Hope this helps
Jay,
Many thanks....I had thought I had to install 'a kernel' into an existing Puppy, somehow
I've d/l'd, burned and am running/posting from 539SCSI
Just had to run the personal settings [initial video was skewed/squashed to the right] as I use 1024x768 on an old 15" tubed screen, intel chipset
Run Network wizard, Install FF, running Alsa Wizard to reset volume mute [didn't know about retrovol].....ay, voila!
Many thanks....btw, pleased to report that 3G dongle is easy to use with LUPU, as I set one up for a friend last week....just had to find the settings for 'Three UK' APN, user, and pw
Now, I'll have to go dig up an old server box and try the SCSI.....do you know if it'll boot from a SCSI drive, or are we still in need of a FAT32 partition with a boot folder on?
Nice!!
I'll try the video driver tweaks, and have a play...is there a bubbles/gems pet? [ha, I'm getting lazy.... ]

Hello,
The SCSI iso should boot from a scsi drive...
Unless it wont, which is an error...LOL
The pets from quickpet and PPM should work fine...
The only one I can think of ATM, that will not, is VBox, as it is kernel specific...

OK, Xorg high recommended and loaded OK, however....maybe my kit, but an external Belkin powered USB2.0 hub and its contents/flashdrive/external speaker amp not recognised....I thought they worked in LUPU 525...I'll check
Hope you're right about the SCSI, there are precious few working SCSI puppies

After boot, should the Update be applied?
After the system is booted, SHOULD the PUP525 Update be applied to PUP539 or is it built-in? Not sure where this question should be posted. Here? or where @Playdayz can see it, here?
And, here is a new PET that MAY be useful with this PUP
Finally, should Xorg_HIGH still be used for Intel chips (i.e. 945 chipset)?
Thanks in advance for any advice

Hello,
The 5.25 update should work the same, as the build is 5.25 exactly, with a few add ons.
And XorgHigh is built in, as is xcompmgr...
Built it around my Intel machine....
