Sounds good, if you have some instructions how to replace the current one. From what Iguleder said I understand it's not just matter of replacing kernel binaries.

ok
dejan555, you should change two:
1 change kernel modules in "initrd.gz" you can do like this:
gzip -d initrd.gz #then you will get initrd file
cpio -i -d < initrd # then you will get rootfs, delete the kernel modules in /lib/modules/XXX ,put the newer kernel into, with only basic modules.such as useful fs(aufs squashfs ....) drivers(....). I can help you to do this if you like.
2 change modules in XXX.sfs, do like this:
unsquashfs XXX.sfs /somewhere. delete the kernel modules in /lib/modules/, then put the newer kernel into there. change firmware in /lib/, the last step is mksquashfs somewhere XXX.sfs

ok... have fun!

give me email with "initrd.gz" I send newer kernel to you.

See my profile for email or click email button under my signature.
Also, can I do something to get those asian fonts in dpup, maybe add some specific font?

I have sent it to your email address. please check it.
It include: vmlinuz-2.6.38.6, lib/modules/2.6.38.6, Chinese font,firmware,System.map-2.6.38.6

note. The drivers"ext2/ext3/ext4" have been built as modules. So you can add "modprobe ext2/etx3/ext4" in init script.

OK, thanks, got them.
Do you also have kernel sources sfs? Users might want it to compile their drivers.
I will try to do this switch on my own with your instructions, if I fail I'll send you initd.
So you compiled it on debian, is it properly patched for puppy, did you already test it with dpup?

Yes, I have patched the kernel to support puppy.
I will send your the kernel headers later.
you know that I have no space to upload the kernel sources. about a month ago I sent kernel sources to Pemasu. He upload it to his space
I have spent lots of time in compiling newer kernel to support puppy(lupu Spup Dpup puppy), now it is more perfict.
I test it by full install of Dpup, but the iso have been delete.I am sure it will works for Dpup. If you find something wrong I will compile it agian.

Finally frugal installed the 485.
My application environment works ok.

One question tho: Is sfs installer the same thing as load sfs on the fly?
If not, what are the differences?

restart JWM

#55 Post by Béèm »

Maybe I missed something, but in the shutdown menu I don't find 'restart JWM'.
It's not very handy to go to the X-prompt and type xwin as every running program is closed then.
In the advanced tab of shutdown, there is a seconf cancel which could become restart JWM.

suddenly running hot

#56 Post by Béèm »

I have been working with 485 for quite some time.
All of a sudden without some real reason, I heard the fan blowing more and more until it was at full speed all the time.
The CPU temp raise to 88°C.

I closed all programs, but the fan was still at full speed and the temp at 88°C.

Htop didn't indicate an excessive CPU usage.

It was only when I restared X that things went to normal.

Very scary.

So I use dpup now for a couple of days.
But at reboot I have to do the WiFi connection setup again.
Kinda annoying.

Also the detection of the WiFi device is different from other puppy's.
Normally I get eth0 for the ethernet port and eth1 for the WiFi device.
In dpup I get eth0 for WiFi and eth1 for ethernet.

Once configured I can use the WiFi, but it is weird.

beem sfs on the fly, are you talking about jrb's sfs linker? It's different I believe, haven't tried it though, but instead of copying contents of sfs to filesystem it just mounts sfs and then makes symlinks to filesystem?

SFS on the fly,
Instead of using the bootmanager, selecting a sfs for next boot and do a reboot SFS on the fly can do this without rebooting.
You also 'un-detach' an installed sfs on the fly. Very handy.
It is standard now in latest puppy's, like icepup, spup (not sure about lucid)

Hence my question about sfs installer in dpup.
Maybe another way to do the same thing as I understand one can uninstall such a sfs through PPM. As long as it don't grow the save file it is ok then.

partition size program
I wanted to see how much space is left on the partitions.
Intuitively I clicked on the freemem applet. That didn't work.
I don't see a program in the menu, nor in the control panel.

Is this an omission?
