Yeah, I tried the compiling route, but couldn't get it done, as I'm no 'programmer' .. But it works well anyway, still using it , no issues so far.. :D Would like to know if I forgot to update anything though?

Cos I will also update BASH to 4.2, and maybe e2fsprogs plus a few other things, if needed.. I tried a few builds, had to remove some of the wary pets before the new build worked, not entirely sure which one was breaking things, as I removed a few "-w5.pet" files from the list, and then it worked

So if anyone knows of other things that should be updated with the list in my previous post, then let me know!

And about those names, anything but KiltPup - not that this is a good reason but it always annoyed me when I was little that people would assume I was Scottish (and certain nationalities always do) ... When you meet a guy called Dave, would you assume he comes from Daveland, or that the Dutch guy you know is called Holland?? (phew, rant over....)

It will include a browser installer so you can choose which browser you want to use..
Only elinks (the terminal web browser) is installed by default.

One of the options in the browser installer is "Firedog 3.6" - this is a special version of Firefox 3.6, with more addons, built especially for Puppy Linux. You can search this forum for Firedog for more info.

EDIT: There are Seamonkey addons in the PPM, I may add some to Opera when I update it, and also SM2, if the Wary one works nice.

Also, on a different subject:

In the next Puplite, I will be replacing quite a few busybox applets with the full utilities found in the sysfsutils, gnutils, coreutils, findutils and util-linux packages, following Barrys work on Wary.

EDIT: Barry actually did the opposite, and found busybox lacking compared the to full utils, so I have been careful not to let busybox replace anything not already covered by busybox. I also did indeed replace a few busybox applets with the full utils..

I will also be upgrading anything already installed in Puplite, with the newer versions found in these packages. Something in one of these packages breaks things, and I'll have to find it.

I will also upgrade busybox from 1.18.2 to 1.18.4..

If anyone has any useful information on doing this, then please post here.

Thank you Sc0ttman
I'd found an cheat solution to install "FlashGot"
1. Delete /root/.mozilla/seamonkey
2. Unpack flashgot4seamonkey.tar.gz
3. Start seamonkey and approve to install Flashgot
That's all

This tar file used with seamonkey 2.xx

A note about you2pup, it only does youtube, if it even works at the moment..
Firedog includes the best video downloader there is (IMHO)..

Anyway, on another note,
just an update coming here, so I can keep up with myself:

I'm now on an alpha3... I have now also upgraded:

- updated to busybox 1.18.4-unicode, coreutils 6.9-6-p4, dialog-1.1-20110302-widechar, findutils-4.4.2-w5, readline-6.0-w5

- replaced/disabled the following busybox applets: depmod, wc, httpd (=>monkey), ftpd(=>pureftpd), xargs, modprobe,

- updated the following scripts to work with latest busybox ('free' applet): /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit, rc.shutdown, /sbin/pup_event_fontend_d

The 'free' applet has changed a bit, needed to update some scripts..

EDIT: If anyone knows any other scripts that use the 'free' applet in busybox, then please post it here.. I think I caught them all...

The main SFS has grown by around 4mb so far, but RAM usage is more or less the same.. I will re-apply technosaurus' work on static system daemons, to lower RAM usage even more.

Most of the extra SFS size is down to extra ffmpeg libs and SDL being added.. A little bit is down to some findutils/coreutils programs replaceing some busybox applets, and also cos the new busybox is a bit bigger (but uses more applets and full help for each applet :) )

Next step(s):

- update to bash 4.2
- better archive handling
- add exploderpm
- add more complete xz-utils, with all symlinks and extra shell scripts
- make sure to remove old xz and replace with symlink to new one
- updated more core libs - e2fsprogs, font stuff, jwm
- updated many apps: pmusic, pburn, pupradio,

If anyone knows why root-tail will not show up on the JWM desktop, after JWM version 2.0.1, I would love to hear about it.. Why?

I want to upgrade JWM and will almost certainly do that..
But then PMConky will not work.

(PMConky, by goingnuts, uses ash/root-tail to display system info on the desktop, like Conky but simpler - but it will not show up on the desktop if JWM is newer than version 2.0.1)

I have yet to find out why, but have looked long and hard, although this, like so many things, is totally beyond me!

Any ideas people?
Where might I look to get to the cause of this issue?

So far, I have an alpha 4:

- updated to bash 4.2-i486-pup4, added libiconv-1.2.5 - needed cos bash 4.2 supports NLS (adds 300k and 800k)
- re-apply technosaurus' static 'init' daemons, to reduce RAM usage
- better archive handling
- add exploderpm, alien manager
- add the complete xz-utils pacakge, with all symlinks and extra shell scripts
- make sure to remove old xz and replace with symlink to new one
- updated gzip to 1.3.11
- added gtksourceview-2.6.2-1
- updated xfprot
- added bashbox 0.5.1

NOTE: maybe I want to do without iconv+libiconv, although I am prepared to see the SFS size grow as is required (but no more than that obviously..) ... I might re-compile bash and disable NLS, and remove iconv dependencies - I have hacked it out of deadbeef before.. Might work with bash..

BTW, the main SFS is up to 63mb, from 57mb .. mostly new cos I added ffmpeg codecs, SDL, iconv, more coreutils, gtksourceview (for bacon+nicoedit) plus most updated packages are a bit larger..

after some feedback from vickyg2003, it seems the Simple Network Setup tool (aka SNS) does not support WPA2 ... I will take this into account, and will probably go with the classic network tool as default, not dougals multi-chooser-tool thing..

Or whatever is used in Lupu, if different from Puppy4, cos apparently it works really nicely.

It may also be correct that the ath_pci module in puplite may need to be reverted, as I think I updated it for better Eee PC support.

I'd love feedback about which network tools are peoples favourites..

OK so blame my typical Aussie simplicity (and my Oirish heritage? Not my Scottish bits) in linking your moniker with a certain region of the British Isles, and suggesting names like "Hibernia" and "sc0tti"... my apologies...

Fab to see you continuing, and adding, FireDog to the browser options!

As to Network managers, I've been impressed by Jemimah's 'Frisbee' and occasionally frustrated by SNS - but really I have very little experience with WiFi. What I would love to see is a dialogue to run EduRoam connections. My uni, and most of the bigger universities worldwide are using that system (http://www.eduroam.org/). At present the wpa_supplicant (which one?) has to be manually edited in Puppy http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 302#455302, but if there was a nooby-proof app to simplify secure connection to EduRoam I think Puppy would prick up more ears in the wider computing community. I know you have too much on your plate, sc0ttman - so how should I plead my case to the WiFi gurus in the Puppy Community?

Keep up the Good Work :)

OK, here's what I got so far:

I have updated the following:

connectionwizard <-- 18n'ed, more features
connectionwizard_2nd <-- 18n'ed, more features
net-setup.sh <-- fixed GUI
pppoe-connect <-- updated, fixes
pppoe-setup <-- updated, fixes

I also updated the relevant .mo files

I cleaned up the look of the the network managers, and added both the old Pwireless and Frisbee to connectwizard_2nd

I used some LupQ and Quicket Wary scripts as a base, to add 18n support..
And I'll look into eduroam...

Had a thought about the PPM ...

Now that Puplite is very nicely compatible with Wary, and shares many Wary libs and utils...

.. could I add the Wary 5 repo to the Puppy 4 package manager?

I don't see why not.. Not sure exactly what would be required...

1. I would need to add the repo URL, with a checkbox to select it
2. I would need to scan the repo for pet files
3. I would need to get the (new format) pet specs from the pet files
4. I would need to output the pet specs info as needed
5. I would need to re-use/copy the code that lists the pets
6. I would need to handle the listed pets as usual
7. Errrm.. Anything else??

- Steps 3 and 4 would require some code stolen from Wary - no prob there
- All other steps just need code already in the pup4 PPM to be re-used

I would post a thread somewhere in the forum, maybe in PET requests, for someone to create a simple GUI for EduRoam, that could easily integrated into the "Internet Connection Wizard"

Maybe emphasise it can be very useful for a large number of students, all over the world!
That seems reason enough to support it, in Linux at least.

I have not been to Uni, so I asked a few mates about EduRoam, and I know their Unis use it, I checked, but they had never heard of it  So I'll do my learnings and see what I can come up with..

I'll have a good look at that post, and go from there.

How about...

http://wiki.hiit.fi/display/it/eduroam+for+Linux+users

I think tunneled TLS for security may be a problem....

Image

....as I don't recall seeing that before - maybe a different version of Network Manager...?

Note: if you get this far;
After this you may be asked to allow Network Manager to access your keyring. You need to allow this practice if you wish to connect to eduroam. Unfortunately Network Manager isn't able to ask for a password when connecting to eduroam and thus your password needs to be stored to Gnome Keyring. Fortunately keyring's security is good.
So Gnome may be needed for keyring, too...?

Many Thanks to you both, sc0ttman and Aitch - in your response to my earlier bleating about EduRoam. I certainly didn't mean to hijack your thread OR divert your attention away from your core project, sc0ttman (BTW the Network Connection dialogues look fab- can't wait to try it and all your other updates in your Puplite6, alpha 6+ AKITA - great name choice). "Real world" issues last week intervened with my investigations in the Puppiverse - still I dunno what happened to my notifications to updates on this thread.
Aitch - thanks for your legwork on the EduRoam issue - hadn't seen that site at all, hope to follow through with your suggestions (both of you) later today... and now "keyring" dependencies...
Cheers!

ubuntu light fonts

#48 Post by sc0ttman »

Been playing with the JWM theme and Ubuntu fonts... I like the new fonts...
Especially the "Ubuntu Light" font, which I have added to GTK, JWM, also Firefox, etc..

But I have a problem - if I install the other Ubuntu fonts, the 'Light' font is ignored in JWM and replaced by one of the other Ubuntu fonts, depending on which others are installed.

I actually don't mind leaving out the other Ubuntu fonts too much, as each font is around 400kb!
I just hope it all works OK!

Here is what I have in all my JWM config files..
This is what works when I have only the 'Ubuntu Light' font installed (no other Ubuntu fonts)..

Code: Select all

<Font>Ubuntu-L 12</Font>

Using anything else does not show the "Ubuntu Light" font, filename 'Ubuntu-L.ttf"
..which is what I want.

Anyway, here are some screenshots, pf the 'Ubuntu Light' font in action:
Thoughts are welcome.

Uploading an alpha now.. my alpha 7...

Only tested on my home PC at the moment and 2 others at a local college..

This one is quite slick, I reckon, looks 'fresh' for a Puppy 4..
Boots straight to desktop on my PC, and the college PCs..
But not in vbox... which actually is good, cos you can choose Xvesa, isntead of Xorg :)

Still loads of things to address...

- usability, use the first boot BaCon help guide thing
- make the devx updated and fixed (still compiles with a normal 420 devx)
- add a few pfix options
- clean up the menu
- add a few small apps that are still missing
- write a quickpet and openGL installer thing
- make shinobars sfs_load 1.1 work right (still using goingnuts version, which I like)
- ROX desktop disabled by default (for now), but easy to switch
- improve hardware support (probably well beyond me)

But I think I have improved the following:
- updated to: bash 4.2, busybox 1.18.4, jwm-500, xz
- updated to a Wary 512 "core" - same Glibc, X11, GDK, GTK, ffmpeg, etc
- pfix=usbsave.. disables real time saving to savefile in pupmode 12
- great codec support (x264, webm, etc)
- still uses vlc (1.1.5, no gui version) plus VLC-GTK
- themes, icons, mime types and looks
- cleanup of all useless files (I reckon)
- skips input device dialog, unless choosing serial port
- improved wallpaper setting (still a weak point)
- improved switching between ROX and "JWM only" desktops
- updated a few apps (startups, macchanger-gui, network wizard)
- updated loads of apps: PupApps, PupControl, Woofy, Geany, gFTP, pmusic, pburn, etc
- added BaCon and NicoEdit, plus PupTray as example
- added deadbeef
- added termit, a VTE terminal, used in Geany
- other stuff

Link to follow soon if anyone wants to test it ..
ISO size is about 85mb...
