Thanks for the info and suggestions, I will get back to ya later...

***EDIT: OK, I am back.
Puppyt wrote:Just a quick note about your repository, sc0ttman -
I tried numptyphysics and it generated two menu items in the Fun section.
Yep, I posted about duplicate menu items above, I will have a hack a jwm_menu_create, see what I can do...
I thought also that it had a neat soundtrack and effects I couldn't get here - perhaps that was Crayon Physics I remember.
Yeah, thats crayon physics, which is really really good!
GnuChess doesn't have a menu item
It's a CLI chess engine that needs a frontend.. the description states this in the PPM (which you can't see yet!)

However I may remove the chess engines from PPM and just offer a complete "xboard+fairymax" bundle, which includes an engine... Maybe also a cboard+gnuchess bundle.. I think that's best..
wbar and wbarCC won't load properly as pets unless via PupControl. When I tried to run wbar control console, couldn't see it start and when I rebooted X I lost my xorgwizard settings.
Both of these packages need cleaning up for Akita, as they work out of the box on Puppy Arcade..
All the other games I tried seemed to load fine (except FreeCiv). Sorry that I can't be more diagnostic with my feedback at the present time.
Cheers.
That's great, thanks for testing..
PS I actually PM'ed dave earlier last week to ask if he had an "IceBox" pupplet to showcase his wares - it would be amazing if you could resurrect that pet 'project' if you have it handy.
I will definitely get it in the repo, but have had troubles with auto installing tcl+tk, by listing them as deps - others that I've done work fine :?: I actually included nearly all of them in Puppy Arcade as default - so there is one puplet out there showcasing his apps :)
What about SoftMaker2008 for an office suite? Still a licensing issue with that?
I uploaded most of it while at my 2nd (less important) job, but could not get enough free time to convert and upload all the openoffice and softoffice stuff... I will do that soon.. I think I have softmaker 2010 lying around, and Barry made a softoffice pet recently.. The only license 'issues' with Softoffice programs are that they require email registration before they will work.
And perhaps gnuGo (I think - over in the MacPup threads I remember it being discussed) - the kids seem really interested in that as a boardgame, better than checkers or chess which surprised me (happily).
Never heard of it, but I'll have a look... Do you have a tar.gz around anywhere?

Thanks for all your detailed replies, sc0ttman -
I had no idea that one of your Arcade Pupplets had dave (pa) mcclamrock's goodies - you seemed to be churning out versions back then and I just didn't get a chance to try any :(
Actually, trying to steer clear of exposing the kids to first-person shooters - the collection of games jemimah provided in Fluppy is about our speed (and the HSB/HanSamBen pupplets, of course. Can't forget ol' GamesPup either). Might have been a bit of passive avoidance, if any of your Arcades had something Quake-like the kids would dig out :( Apologies.

Versions floating around on the forum are dio444's:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 5130#15130

GuestToo's pup (via Muggin's 'Quarry' pet):
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 234#161234

But runtt21 is DEFINITELY the "go-to" guy on the forums (pun intended), and at last count recommends this version:

Thanks again for all the earlier clarifications,
Cheers!

software for Akita

#378 Post by don570 »

Here are three pets I made for Akita

Quick Launch is improved by allowing apps to launch as
well.... and I fixed the list of folders,
and translations are improved.

Elinks_text-1.0 is the result of an idea I had.
If a text file was the output of elinks then it would
easier to manipulate the text. So I made this rightclick option.

It turns out to be very useful for me. See yourself :)

Feel free to rewrite the software and use it in Akita.
Make sure that Quick Launch launches with Ctrl-shift -L.

Can anyone compile this? (I have failed, not sure why)

It's a lightweight boulderdash clone, a faithful recreation of original (unlike others)

rewrote quick lauch

#382 Post by don570 »

I tried the new quick launch on a 800x600 screen
and it didn't work properly, because of the changes I made.
So I reduced the height of list and some other small changes.

I made Quick launch a different way
this time.

I made the app list from the .desktop files.
This helps to make it a universal program,
but I still had to make a special one for Akito linux.

Note I put an icon in the folder 'Screenshots'
so that 'zero files' message won't pop up
when launching screenshot browser.

Have you ever looked at the cire program?
I don't use it , but it might be better than Osmo
for keeping notes.

I recompiled the latest ROX-Filer that now uses gtkbuilder. If you use glipper-lite and gtkdialog compiled without glade, you can eliminate libglade now.
Check out my github repositories. I may eventually get around to updating my blogspot.

I've been using your ROX binary pretty much since you posted it, and have had no problems, the drag and drop columns work fine.. Nice :)

But I have not re-compiled gtkdialog, and know diddly about glipper (no glip* cmds installed!), but maybe you could start a thread about removing glade as a dep in Puppy, what needs doing and so on, so we can make it an optional package for future puppies... show people the way..
___________________

Don, I'll have a look at QuickLaunch 1.6... Which fbreader package do you use? I found an old one, which I lost by mistake, but I will add fbreader into the Akita repo, preferably the smallest, latest, greatest package that works in Akita...

Also, I think I will leave Osmo as is, I like it..
____________________

About the repo, I also added: softmakeroffice-2008-bk, openoffice-2.2.0 and openoffice-3.2..
Plus some small SDL games, like digger, pipepanic.. and some other stuff..

I'll update the htaccess file on the server, so the .pets are 'fancy indexed', so they can be sorted by date, etc...

I will add LibreOffice, the LibreOffice installer as well... Can't test the LibreOffice SHS .pet (150mb) - I don't have enough RAM to uncompress it (apparently).. I'm also very low on disk space, so save files are out of the question...

It may just be a problem with the .pet that I had, so if anyone can show me another LiberOffice package, that I can test, then I'll test that (sfs or pet)..

I'll also try 01mickos installer GUI, but need disk space, damn it.

here is gtkdialog4 (you can try making a symlink to gtkdialog3, but some apps may not work - see barrys blog), the only others are older versions if gnumeric and gtrayicon which wasnt in older puppies at all and ghasher (i think there is a gtkdialog alternative).

btw here was the hacky one liner I used:

Code: Select all

for x in /*in/* /usr/*in/* /usr/local/*in/* ; do [ "`ldd $x |grep glade`" ] && echo $x; done
feel free to modify it to try and find others that you suspect may be unnecessary

Nice, thanks for that binary...

But.. Damn! All of the following need Glade, in Akita: gtrayicon, galculator, ghunter, gins, glurp, ghasher, gtkdialog3, gtkdialog4, ssindex, ssconvert.. also maybe firewall-genie??

If I am to remove Glade, I will need a gtkdialog3 that doesn't use it... I cannot really be bothered to go through bkhome.org myself and find all fixed pets... I might tho...

But even then, Barry only updated SOME pets - then he changed to using 'gtkdialog4' where needed, instead.. So removing gtkdialog3 might not work well anyway... I could PM 01micko I guess - cos Slacko has updates many scripts, cos its *only* got gtkdialog4.. but micks really busy at the moment..

I might see what I can do, need to find alternatives for glurp, can remove the rest (ghunter, ghasher, etc).. Will use 'phash' by Barry instead... Not sure what 'gins' is...

Also used your one-liner to find the following are missing libs: ssindex, ssconvert, fluidsynth, foomatic-rip, bareview, gtmoz...
Most will get removed..

Hmmm, it seems a few things like the Font DPI setter (setxftdpi) also use gins, which needs glade...
I wonder what else needs 'gins'....

And how much space does Glade take up? the libs seem small enough...
Why remove Glade? Is it that slow or something?

** EDIT:

I also noticed that rodin.s kindly updated input wizard and other things, but it means I have to re-add the changes I did, in order to make input-wizard (and others) use 'gtkdialog', not 'gtkdialog2'...

I am also trying out having ONLY gtkdialog4 ...
The one attached by techno a few posts earlier..

I have a /usr/sbin/gtkdialog symlink pointing to /usr/sbin/gtkdialog4, and have used the script below to update everything I can find to use 'gtkdialog', not 'gtkdialog2' or 'gtkdialog3'

Save the code below as script_grepper, and chmod +x

Code: Select all

#!/bin/ash
[ ! "$1" ] && echo "Usage: `basename $0` SEARCH [REPLACE]" && exit 1

mv $HOME/script_grepper.log $HOME/script_grepper.log.bak
clear; echo Please wait...

for FILE in /*in/* /usr/*in/* /usr/local/*in/* /usr/local/*/* ; do
   case `file ${FILE}` in
    *Bourne*)
    	if [ "`cat ${FILE} | grep ${1}`" != "" ];then # $1 was found
      		if [ "$2" != "" ];then # if $2 was given
      			FILE2=`cat ${FILE} | sed "s/${1}/${2}/g"` # replace $1 with $2 in $FILE2
      			echo "${FILE2}" > ${FILE} # replace $FILE with the updated $FILE2
      			echo ${FILE} was updated >> $HOME/script_grepper.log
      			echo ${FILE} was updated
      		else
      			echo ${FILE} >> $HOME/script_grepper.log
	      		echo ${FILE} # just show the match, don't replace anything
      		fi
      	fi
   	;;
	*);;
	esac
done

exit 0
Usage: script_grepper SEARCH [REPLACE]

sc0ttman wrote:GAME SUGGESTIONS WELCOME... Keep them small please! ;)
You might already have this but if not: From the winner of The International Obfuscated C Code Contest 2004 best game, vik1 a 8K racing-game (source code unreadable :-/).
Usage: vik1 ['a']['d'][#]
a - Advanced racing in a winter landscape
d - Racing in at night in the dark
# - Race track selection 1-3 are valid numbers
Here are a few examples:
Command line: Description:
vik1 Run track 1 at daytime in the summer
vik1 a Run track 1 at daytime in the winter
vik1 d Run track 1 at night in the summer
vik1 3 Run track 3 at daytime in the summer
vik1 d3 Run track 3 at night in the summer
vik1 ad2 Run track 2 at night in the winter

Note that the order in which the argument characters are entered is important. It is for example not possible to type ./vik1 da. (Well it is possible, but the result will not be as expected.)

The space key accelerates the car. Releasing the space key slowly reduces the speed. The left and right arrow keys are used to steer the car.

i18n'd input wizard seems broken!!

#392 Post by sc0ttman »

Thanks goingnuts, that's great, sooo tiny lol.. I'll add that in.. I've been looking into how to shrink SDL games as well, Keef gave me some great tips - basically hacking the source to use more compressed images, sounds, etc ... Maybe even a mcb of (puzzle?) games, using shared images, sounds, etc... Or do it in reverse - one 'engine' plus a few skins/mods, etc.. Something for me to play with later.. ;)
___________________________________

On another note, I have been upgrading stuff to remove a few dependencies,
nothing major, but proving to be a real pain in the neck...

I have re-updated the i18n'd /usr/sbin/input-wizard that I got from rodin.s,
so that it now uses gtkdialog3 or later... BUT, it just won't work!!

The buttons do nothing - the ONLY changes from 01mickos version
(which works fine in Akita) is the gettext stuff...

Hmmm, any ideas anyone?? I'll attach it, so you can test! ;)

I don't wanna revert to 01mickos, then we lose i18n and 4 nice translations...

I have added, instead: gtkdialog4 (0.8.1, no glade deps), phash, set-xtfspi (Xdialog version)

It seems that Firewall_genie might be OK without glade installed.

I want to compile the following with gtk-builder, if possible: glurp, galculator, gtrayicon...

Also, I've updated the PPM and browser installer, because I found a nice Google Chrome (but older) package that works in Akita.. It's in the repo.

I've also updated Viewnior to 1.1, from common repo, cause its got more features..
