That's what backups are for ;)

...what, you didn't make backups?!

Meh, it's OK, I don't either :P I'm lazy (and apparently both penny-wise and pound-foolish!).

I fixed jwm_tools to remove duplicate entries (your fix probably broke with submenus enabled, though I didn't test it) ... also added support for keybindings

cool, I 'll have a look... I tested my fix with and without submenus, seemed to work fine.. But if u got a shell only solution, I'll apply that instead.

I just uploaded firefox-7.0.1-1-akita.pet - works great!

I added adblock, flashblock, betterprivacy, video downloader to the last one :)
but this one also uses ubuntu fonts, has ghostery addon, better settings...
(both based on Tmans firefox builds, so thanks to him)

MIME type issues: affects Akita, I guess: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=73833

Note on better support for Asian languages (or fonts at least): http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 467#586467

Also, jemimah is planning an update to frisbee, have to see how that goes...

and, sorry to post here, it's a whole to do list... in case my PC explodes, catches fire or has a heart attack

Code: Select all

  - prepare for kernel upgrades, check Barry Ks blog:
		- update /usr/local/bin/drive_all and /usr/sbin/filemnt
		- /etc/rc.d/rc.shudown,rc.sysinit,rc.services, and so on
		- woofy, zdrvcutr, things that look into DISTRO_SPECS
		- searched for KERNELVER, will soon do: KERNEL3CHARS, DISTRO_SPECS.. results so far:
				/usr/sbin/filemnt
				/usr/sbin/puppyinstaller
				/usr/sbin/remasterpup2
				/usr/sbin/sfs_load
				/usr/bin/edit-sfs
				/usr/bin/woofy
				/usr/bin/zdrvcutr

	- fix mounting of utf stuff in vfat partitions for JWM drives, ROX drives (drive_all)
			- (check shinobars work in latest drive_all and in pmount)

	- fix 2 line partition names in pup_event_frontend_d!!

	- update grub4dos
			- adds support for ext4, and later kernels

	- petget needs NLS updates, especially for yaf-splash

	- add QtWeb to browser installer? and netsurf?

	- add a WM installer?? (using my "ql_gui" thingy)
			- openbox - akita repo
			- fbpanel - akita repo
			- xfce - wary5OLD repo
			- fluxbox - akita
			- lxpanel - akita
			- lxde - wary repo
			- compile e16 or e17?

	- fix the following PPM packages:
			- freeciv 2.2.5: re-compile or fix existing package!!
			- add Xdialog info, setup stuff to pinstall of:
					- tint2, refresh menus

	- add to akita repo and to PPM:
			- tor: needs libevent-2.0.so.5
			- xfce: needs dbus-glib, thunar, rc file tweaks
			- xfe: maybe just needs older (other compiled) FOX lib added
			- conky_lua package, with all deps and menu loader, plus pinstall to load it all up
			- fbpanel, with already refreshed menus! (see stu90s work)
			- goffice1 and goffice2 (add pinstall to make default blah)
			- bmpanel2 (customise it first - add a menu and tray icons!)
			- java 1.6.x (not 1.7 it is crap... I would go with 0.9.x if I could!)
			- Geeqie image viewer and NLS

	- update /usr/local/ql_gui
		- add 'dependency' feature: add new tag to syntax of config files, if present, they are the deps (comma separated)
		- then add openbox apps to the theme one, with openbox deps, then make es, ru, fr, de translations

	- update VLC-GTK - vlc-gtk-btn:
			- if audio files playing, add a simple playlist TREE thing, with filelist and play/stop/next/prev/save buttons
			- maybe include id3 tags
			- or see playmusic, simple GTK player, or pmusic 0.1, or ashmusic

	- update woofy:
		- after kernel update fix:
				- add kernel switching: choose a 2nd ISO, to use its kernel

	- i18n more puppy scripts
			- woofy, vlc-gtk, others?

	- add bacon syntax highlighting to geany

	- gparted_shell i18n'd, but it still needs the translations added
feel free to take any of that on...

Gparted broken in Akita?

#441 Post by sc0ttman »

I think GParted (or libparted) may be broken in Akita.. Can someone please help me test this? I failed to make changes to an HD with Akita, but Pup 431 worked fine :/ Not good... Can anyone verify whether or not GParted is brokon in Akita?

Gparted broken

Hi Scott, just wanted to let you know. Did a quick test, and it is broken. Tried to delete a partition, and it failed. Thanks, Rob

Damn it... I don't know if it would be libparted or Gparted, but I am using exactly the same packages as Wary 5.1.2 (I think, will double check..) and the same deps as in Wary too... Hmmmm... Can't promise I can fix that without going back to a pup4 Gparted package...

EDIT: I have had some success with GParted in Akita, and some of the failures also happened in Puppy 431, but GParted in 431 is generally much more reliable for me in my brief tests...

I'm surprised noone has tried to replace gparted with red hat's disk utils. Gparted requires several extra dependencies that are not used by anything else (the C++ versions of gtk - gtkmm,...) ... Then again gnome-disk-utils has its own set of many smaller dependencies, but many are useful to other programs.

I was trying puplite 5 and scott directed me here.

downloaded the beta and burned onto a cd.

tried on a pentium 4 machine, things do seem to work.

tried on a pentium 3 machine, cannot use a save file. I created save files either normal or encrypted (ext2), the subsequent boot gave kernel panic. Can only boot to ram on this machine, which is the one I really want to use a lighter system.

the machine is P3 933 mhz with 512 mb of ram.

any suggestions?

thanks

Hmmm, not sure... Does the save file get created OK? Can you mount it when booting without save files (using 'pfix=ram')?
Have you tried a frugal install to the same HD as the save file? You can use the 'Frugal Installer' to do that...

So for now, from Live CD, try removing the 'usbsave' pfix option from the boot commands?
(You can press 'e' to edit any boot entry in GRUB)..
You could also try to boot with one of the 'pfix=rdsh' parameters to dropout to ramdisk shell, to read the files there...
I read that somewhere, it might help..
Pfix Options

pfix=ram will run Puppy totally in RAM and ignore saved sessions/storage file(s)
pfix=<n> where <n> is the number of saved sessions to ignore for a multisession-CD
pfix=rdsh will exit to initial ramdisk commandline (do not pivot_root)
pfix=usbcard for booting from USB flash drive via USB 2.0 to PCMCIA adapter
pfix=clean will force a simulated version upgrade (for Puppy 2.13 and later)
pfix=purge will force an even more radical file cleanup (to fix broken system) (for Puppy 2.14 and later)
pfix=#debug may help with debugging
pfix=copy or nocopy controls if main sfs file is loaded (copied) to RAM
Maybe, lastly, create a swap partition of swap file?? This is good for RAM limited PCs, although 512MB should be fine..

And just to be really annoying and waste all your time, GParted is broken in Akita at the moment, so you'd have to create
a swap partition using another pup.. But Akita includes the "Swap File Manager" in Menu->System, so that's nice ;)

This could be done without a save file, and it might help... But I can't say it's a 'fix'...

there is a swap file.

yes, the only way to boot is pfix=ram

the save files are created ok and mounted ok in subsequent reboots. It's after that the kernel panicked.

Hi loubapache.

Well, if you don't like experiments just take a 'Classic Pup 2.14X', as far as I know the latest version is 'Top9' - put it onto your P3 pc, via frugal or full installation - create a swap partition - and let the Puppy fly.

You can find 'Classic Pup 2.14X' in the projects forum, simply look for the greatest thread of the Puppy forums with more than 310 pages, more than 4650 posts and more than 731000 views - It's one of the best Puppies.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Thanks, maik.murks .

Will give it a try. Hope it has some reasonably modern apps.

You can find it here:

Thanks. This is more convenient. I took a brief look last night and it seems it can have Chrome, OpenOffice, and Gimp. These are what I need. Although they are slightly older versions of the software, they might be good enough.

Thanks again.

Here's three apps for you to put in the next version of Akita.

1) The newest Quick Launch 2.0 for Akita.
Remember Ctrl-shift-L is the launching keystrokes.

2) A pet package by Stu90 ---> makepet
that I have found useful. You should take a look at it.
It takes a folder and makes a pet in a flash with a right click. Amazing.

3) The latest Bacon Recorder 235. I am still working on
improving how it detects hard drive partitions.
I'll have a new version in a few days.

I discovered that when I selected a more rectangular screen
resolution the right hand side icons were in their proper place.

Perhaps it's only wide screen resolutions (like 1400x900)
that are causing the causing the icon placement to be confused.

alt. downoad link?

#453 Post by charbaby66 »

not sure if this ia a pup to try on an old toshiba sattelite 490cdt w/ 64mb ram, 3.4g hd , and a 1/2 calfed win98se system w/500 mb linux swap

>>off topic but related .....

-- puplite esp. the wary version actually looks promising and (yeah) didnt have the video crash on x-logoff to a distorted text screen (colored lines no letters) in Xvesa,-- it was beautifully legible - only puppy so far that i tried that behaved :) it does still go to a white screen on x-logout with the other vid driver but this is that stupid s3virge 2mb card so that happens w/all puppies ...( i can tap thru blindly to make a save file or reboot out of if needed now that i have had the practice! LOL)

.. nice - netsurf is speedy, linksys wusb54g wireless running no prob -- wow! ( tried firepup ghastly slow, FF/Opera -egad!!and no patience to see if flash and/or youtube will ever load on this sad beast!) but it's built like a BSH and solid so i want to try to see what i can get it to do....... will let ya know...

>>enough digressing.. back to the topic

but what i want to know, is are there other download links -- all i have tried give me some windoze download manager to install... and well..
that is not making my puppy happy.( love the irony tho!) i dont think i have the resources for wine, so i decided to whine instead! if u think i could do better w/akita, plse provide an alt. linux friendly link

great job on all you have done (or put together) i have seen so far
will keep you posted on how it goes with both builds and i am wading thru the forum for other lite pups so can compare

That works, but is limited to 1024x768x16, IIRC, setting frame rate to 60hz on xorg tune setting, or also fine in xvesa

I think you'll struggle with only 64mb ram, though, regardless, so swap partition will be essential, I'd have thought

I've recently gotten rox + jwm + xvesa running with mtpaint, minimum profit text editor and dillo1 in under 8mb. I'll need to do some further tweaking to get drivers and internet working, but it looks promising for older boxes with as low as 16mb of RAM and a 586 compatible.
