I've been gathering SFS recently as it happens...

I added these, briefly tested as working.
http://akita.scottjarvis.com/OOo4kids-1.2_en.pet
http://akita.scottjarvis.com/OOo4kids-1.2_en.sfs
I found it very simple to extract various games files from sidder's HSB (HanSamBen - a 412/431 puplet for kids) repository and have them running in Akita
I'll see if I can package them up as a collection in sfs or pet... It's easy in akita, using the right click options, if you wanna beat me to it...
I wonder what software solutions could be included for text-to-speech or voice recording
Here's a text to speech thing:
http://akita.scottjarvis.com/flite_gui-2.2-akita.sfs
http://akita.scottjarvis.com/flite_gui-2.2-akita.pet

Also, for movie editing, there is Avidemux in the repo. I am no expert in using them, cinerella seems tricky, but I only gave it 5 mins...

Also for screen/voice recording, the latest Akita has FFMPEG Vidcap, VLC-GTK, PAVrecord, latest Precord, rezound (in PPM), and FFconvert (if u wanna manually fix the ffmpeg commands it generates)...
Perhaps a typing game suite perhaps?
Funnily enough, I tried out a typing game called tuxtype something... Didn't work..
Legendary game engineer, Mike Singleton, passed away recently http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/ga ... ary-games. I've kinda peppered the forums with requests for "Lords of Midnight" games in Puppy linux, and while I can get various fan-made java remakes going, the dos versions remain a bit of a challenge to me (the ones I have use the dexe format). Wine would be the environment of choice to run Chris Wilds' remakes in Windows, as with the "War of the Solstice" remake. Seems like I have myself a project this Christmas break, in Akita :)
I think you know a lot more about DosBox and WINE etc than I do, but if you get any of it going I can package it up... ;)

That's fabulous, sc0ttman - as ever, you're a champ :)
I'll get around to tinkering with L.O.M. issues next weekend- stay tuned...
Especial thanks for all those media pets - you're right I thnk, I explored Cinerella briefly for a small movie-making project recently, and I think Avidemux will be more appropriate for numpties like me and schoolkids, alike.

P.S. have noticed that your repository has been given honorable mention on an external forum for Puppy Linux - so don't think there are only a handful of us fans out here in the ether :)

Akita beta13 isn't seeing any USB's

#769 Post by dennis-slacko531 »

I've tried both Pmount and Ymount.
Pmount says ERROR: unable to mount sdb1
Ymount says Sorry, mounting partition sdb1 failed.
*** Rox just shows an empty box for all my HDD also. Using the LiveCD now...

My old junker PC could really use this puppy. Earlier today I installed Carolina 003 and yesterday Precise 5.4.1, so my hardware is sure capable. Actually it's 9 yrs old and really needs something like Akita. Any idea's very appreciated. 8)

All I can think of is that you're trying to access ext4?? The old 2.6.25.16 kernel doesn't support it... Even if I update to a newer kernel with ext4, there are still more changes needed to fully support ext4...

If not, try using these commands to check things out: gparted, parted, probedisk, probepart, disktype, mnt, partprobe

Yes that's it. My entire PC is EXT4 because I don't have Windoze --- BTW, I noticed on "first shutdown" that ext4 wasn't an option. I'll format a partition to ext2..... Thanks sc0ttman.

**EDIT** The WM selections interest me probably the most. I'm using E16 and it's pretty nice. When I used E17 in Snowlinux I thought it rather over-the-top (for me). I'm hoping I'll get another shot at Fluxbox and any comments appreciated. :P

I like this one, if not using JWM: http://akita.scottjarvis.com/xfce_minim ... -akita.pet (1.1mb)
It is an extra cutdown xfce environment, that uses very little resources.

I'm using JWM+tint2 at the moment, just checking tint2 really...
I'll try to add fluxbox to the repo in a day or two...

EDIT: Also, these have been added to the Akita Repo,

Hello Sc0ttman:

Does Akita have a 4.x / Wary 5.x level of dial-up driver support?
Also, should the Akita .pets work with Wary?

Thanks.

Akita has the same dialup setup and drivers as pup4, except that a few of the frontends are updated in various ways, internationalised and a few extra fixes .... And I think most of the pets should work with Wary, although Akita is based on Wary 5.1.x, so it has older ffmpeg than Wary 5.3 and later...

And I find that most Lupu, Saluki, Dpup, Wary and Quirky pets work fine in Akita.

Hello I am working on getting an old pc up. It is powered by a Abit BH-6 Motherboard (look @ my sig for basics). I will try to run akita, but no sure if it will work at this point as I need a a new hard drive, and a cd drive. It is obviously is too old to boot from USB.

Hi sc0ttman,
I think that I might *just* be missing something really obvious - like using the wrong Akita kernel version for my kids entertainment machine, or by not having the devx loaded, or bad downloads etc - but I can't get my new HD 5450 Ati-Radeon 1GB ddr3, HDMI+audio playing ball with Akita 13.
Its a Intel Motherboard E210882 (D945GTP) with LGA775 800Mhz cpu, currently running 5gb ddr2 ram (heh - will there ever be a PAE Akita  - Reminds me - even though non-pae will only see 3gb-ish ram, does it distribute the load over the ram banks or only focus on the first banks? Would it make for a longer-surviving RAM overall??)
I downloaded the Akita13beta 2.6.25.16 kernel, and also your Ati-Catalyst-8.12-xorg7.3-k2.6.25.16.pet (MD5 225e08f2d79c1697f021a38557c8b8f8 - if that gels with your original). After I wiped the partition with ol' Akita10 and frugal-installed Akita13 (under a 800x600 vesa that wouldn't show menu icons on the LPC tv I have it connected to), made a new save file and rebooted, I followed your directions for installing the Ati-Catalyst-8.12-xorg7.3 pet, and exited to X. "Ati-catalyst' was option 9 in the xorgwizard list of Xorg options, and on selection churned out a long list of unfurling directories until:

Code: Select all

 ...
usr/src/ati/fglrx_sample_source.tgz
error: could not open display
Uninitialized file found, configuring.
/usr/sbin/xorgwizard: line 239 9800 Segmentation fault aticonfig --initial -f
#grep: fglrx: no such file or directory
nv: target 'ATI-ATOMBIOSLCTV' is not a directory
Starting X, specs in /etc/X1/Xorg.conf, startup apps /root/.xinitrc
(and then drops back to prompt after presenting 'xwin' and 'xorgwizard' selection help)
On one occasion I rewiped and started over, and got a "4838 Segmentation fault" instead of 9800, above. A dodgy hard drive perhaps?
Anyways I extracted the pet in an attempt to track down the problem (in my end-user manner) and found that the fglrx source tgz had configure and make codes within - I'm guessing I need devx installed to help it over the hump? I'm downloading your akita13 devx now, but apparently will take another 3 hours from now to complete download, due to my ISP-choked bandwidth. My plans for LOM on Akita will have to wait...
Any advice on my glx woes gratefully received,
Cheers!

As far as I can tell, this would be the correct driver: http://akita.scottjarvis.com/NVIDIA-71. ... .25.16.pet

And I think this is the latest version of the above pet: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-disp ... river.html

that's not good, I was gonna order one of those... or an nvidia 220 something...
Its an Intel Motherboard E210882 (D945GTP) with LGA775 800Mhz cpu, currently running 5gb ddr2 ram (heh - will there ever be a PAE Akita
I might make one with a Wary kernel again at some point... but like I said eariler, the OpenGL never seems to work right...

No idea to be honest, I'm happy with 2GB...

About the ATI drivers... Not sure what the problem might be... your md5 is fine.. The ATI drivers akita uses were built by MU quite a while back now, maybe your card is too new...

I only once had some ATI hardware to test the ATI drivers with - they worked OK, a little buggy, X crashed a few times, but it seemed OK, performance was crap, but so was the laptop in general... So I can't be sure what the problem is, but I know I didn't use the devx to load the ATI drivers...

Maybe newer drivers need to be compiled, I might be getting a similar card, so could give it a go... I mainly had old nvidia AGP cards, which was lucky cos most Nvidia drivers are available and reliable in puppy... Not so much for ATI, I think...

EDIT: This is the thread where I got the ATI drivers: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=38516

Hi sc0ttman,
thanks for your response - I chose ATI as a conscientious objector to NVIDIA's purported lack of future support for Linux (another quixotic quest of mine - but didn't realise that ATI offered pretty poor/inconsistent support to begin with :( [EDIT: unfounded whinge based on similar experiences reported on various forums. Seems the implementation with Xorg versions and Ati drivers is the main bugbear]). The cards I found at a national techware chain for AU$32 ea - but there is much said lately about the price gouging Australians get for tech compared to the rest of the world - should be cheaper for you in comparative terms.
Works great in LH64 on my main office computer - TaZoC has compiled a more recent version of ATI-Catalyst than you have (11.8 ) seems to be the main issue - though I still didn't succeed in getting HDMI-audio going when running liveCD LH64 on the tv-computer setup. Ran it through from boot changing various BIOS settings on spec - PCI or PEG (express PCI) defaults, HDMI/DVI or HDMI2 ports on the tv - didn't alter the end result in frugal-installed Akita though I noted that I received seg faults at different allocations (?) associated with the same line I mentioned earlier re fglrx. I have a woefully choked internet here at home for another 24 hours but I managed to scrape some references together from non-Puppy Linux,
e.g., http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=281386
http://askubuntu.com/questions/124292/w ... vers-fglrx
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... 175421664/
http://askubuntu.com/questions/74171/is ... 4172#74172
...but closer to home
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=412419
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=48019
...the last of which I'll give a try later today, though I note that some 4.31 /Wary users seem to still be left hanging, near the end of the thread.
Thought I would risk downloading the real thing and try compiling myself, but not until after I get clear headroom (and bandwidth) later this week from here http://driverscollection.com/?H=Radeon% ... x%20x86_64(errgh - bigger than Akita itself!).
In Haste

I got problem...

Grub4Dos no longer wants to boot Akita. Akita worked and booted just fine until now. I also tried other modes and none worked either. It stopped at:

Code: Select all

Unlzmaing Linux... Done.
Booting the kernel.
But that is the final thing I see.

EDIT: Never mind it just takes 5 minutes to boot Akita sometimes

Ahoy sc0ttman!
I think I'm *nearly* there a solution to the ati_catalyst /other driver functionality in Akita 13 + HD5450 glx. I've moved the machine to my office and with my blacklisted bandwidth is back to normal, am putty-filling drivers to a state that's workable. Currently only using DVI (no audio) to computer monitor and 1400x1050 res - but in Xvesa only at present. Selecting option 9 (Ati-catalyst) from the xorgwizard menu still drops me out at line 239, but a different segfault code every time. From my muddle-headed wombating, end-user style, the journey so far:
1) reboot from liveCD pfix=ram to wipe old pupsave and throw in a new 1 MB pupsave, reboot into frugal install.
2) install "amd-driver-installer-12-6-x86.x86_64.run" (tried to do it from outside of X, but couldn't locate it from prompt with "cd /mnt/sda1... etc" so I sh'd it from console, Seemed to work...)
3) copped some error messages about missing tools like "make". I loaded your devxb11 sfs and rebooted to make sure, then ran the driver installation again.
4) new error message in fglrx.install log - something about 'version.h' not being where it was looked for in 'lib/modules/2.6.25.16/build/linux'. I created a dummy file structure and tried to use a likely replacement version.h from usr/include/linux, but the fglrx installation was not fooled.
5) Ran AMD driver installer again from console, this time with --force option. Received warning messages about instability and lack of 3D support "unless correctly configured" at subsequent stage. Something about AMD Catalyst control centre needing running from commandline. Dunno. Rebooted.
6) Had a series of "Need to exit X to enable ATI to configure Xorg correctly" messages in pink dialogue. Kept looping back after each reboot/drop out of X and resume with Xwin or xorgwizard (force xvesa option). Can't recall what happened to stop that cycling...
7) Rebooted with (I think) new options in menu - desktop>Settings>ATI catalyst control center; antispect; and atigraficscard temperature. In System>info>AMD Catalyst control center (but it is non-functional and lacking menu icon)
8] Installed your ati-catalyst driver, then ATI_fglrx from W5 repository via PPM, no real change, so installed also some other ATI drivers from Patriot, in a link I mentioned in my earlier post. Included his DRI pet. I also installed mesa-7.0.3-w5, but by now I reckon I'm just polishing the proverbial instead of resolving the earlier issue with the missing mystery "version.h" for the proprietary driver installation.
9) Hmm might have also manually extracted fglrx_sample_source.tgz to get around xorgwizard break at line 239 of your ati_catalyst driver - don't think I succeeded there in wallpapering over that problem.
10) At the moment, running antinspect from menu gives me - display ":0,0" does not support hte GLX extention; and the temperature checker complains about a failed ati_pplib_cmd execution, but I reckon I'm nearly there. Just this matter outstanding:

Code: Select all

There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition, It could be caused by the following.
No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver appropriate for your ATI hardware, or configure using aticonfig.
So now I'm off to faraway lands http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Configuring and http://man.cx/aticonfig%281%29 - I could be away for some time!
any suggestions or obvious mistakes I might have made in my progress to date, anyone please let me know :)

[UPDATE: 4 hours later, and found that elroy has already prepared a great how-to for this, via he and geoffrey's Carolina support info :http://smokey01.com/carolina/pages/amd-guide.pdf. So I've found that I won't be able to run AMD Catalyst control centre from root- seems that not all Linux' are created equal - and also found I've not used the best amd-driver-installer. Now downloading v12.10, and might also need the kernel sources for Akita too. Hunting down that repository of yours again, sc0ttman... ;)]

[UPDATE2: Dog with a bone, I am at the moment - also downloaded the kernel source from here http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/sf ... ppy4.1.sfs for a fresh bash at the HD5450 when I get home]

Hello New Problems arrived:

1) I have two floppy drives which both have almost never been recognized on akita. I just noticed the problem now.

2) When floppy drive 0 is recognized, no floppy disk works.

Are these general puppy issues or a Akita issues?

Hi sc0ttman,
just an update on the HD5450 issue in Akita13, plus some other observations that might be more generally applicable to the Akita base (2.6.25 kernel).
Well I've "maxed" glxgears to around 2500 fps, but still can't get the benefit out of the card as hoped - will show all the kids' avis fine, but has problems with HD movies like Nina Paley's "Sita Sings the Blues" (1080p). Tried all sorts of driver combinations - usually broke the system or downgraded glxgears to 50fps. wound up sticking to the recipe mentioned in my last post, from elroy via the Carolina thread. First tried your ati-catalyst pet but couldn't work around the fglx directory creation problem I mentioned earlier, and then the "Video Update Wizard" kept dropping out after connecting with the repositories - stating something about not able to get the correct target file size. I wasn't sure which files for glx/dri (mesa) upgrades, or Xorg 7.3+ to 7.5 , so I tried to do it manually, trial-by-error (via Wary repro on ibiblio). Didn't get the upgrade to 7.5 accomplished, but of those additional drivers I successfully installed, the effect was to downgrade fps.
What I noticed was, that when I could only boot into Xvesa then I couldn't actually cleanly drop out of X - no reboot, exit to prompt etc option would do much other than restart X immediately after a slower-than-anticipated delay. I found that Setup>System>Personalize-settings and selecting "Xorg" there, caused a dropout in xorgwizard and I was able to get to console. That was the only method I found that worked.. While in Xvesa I noticed similar behaviours that bark_bark_bark mentioned in his previous posts. I wonder whether there might not be a problem within Akita13's Xvesa configuration?
So for now I'll just leave HD videos on Akita13+Ati Catalyst, and get back to your other pets the kids want to 'work' on this weekend.
Cheers!

sc0ttman just wondering about your FreeCraft pet - I downloaded both game and data pets, and evidently I also need SDL. I installed your SDL_gfx-2.0.24-i486 pet but still I get "Couldn't initialize SDL: No available video device". Has anyone had similar problems or solutions please?
