PostPosted: Mon 16 May 2011, 05:05    Post subject:  Fido and Spot for Beginners, Newbies and Noobs.
Subject description: I fail to get how they relate. Firefox, Seamonkey and so on.

Fido exists now in Wary 5.1.1 56 by Barry and also in Snow pup 17 by Pemasu.

Now this morning testing how Fido works for first time in snow pup.

At boot I come directly into Fido as expected but Firefox does not start up when I click on Browser and not on Firefox either and not if I enter it in Roxterminal either.

So for to be able to give this report I went into terminal and entered

su password and then firefox and it started up.
So for a newbie I guess one need some instructions on how to get things going.

Okay I guess Barry want us in the community to take care about Fido.

fido
At first shutdown, you are asked whether you want to create the save file as administrator (root) or fido (non-root).

I have got it basically working, but there are rough edges and if anyone wants to take this on-board, knock fido into shape, please go for it. You will need to understand how to configure /etc/sudoers, which is quite a challenge.

There are also some scripts that could be modified just a bit to work without requiring switching to root.

spot
I have setup the infrastructure in Woof, device nodes and sound in particular, to make it easier to implement a web browser (etc) running as spot.

If 01micko or kirk, or anyone else, would like to work on this, please go for it.

Imade bold the text that maybe apply to what did happen to me using Snow pup 17 now today.

So most likely I need to start Firefox from Spot while Fido is something I fail to get what it is.

How is Fido and Spot related? So I should start Firefox from Spot when I am in Fido?

How does one do that?

So now I will boot up wary and see how that works. It has Seamonkey by Barry's choice instead of Firefox.

edit. Wary behave differently from Snow pup 17 in relation to browser.

Wary does start the Browser instantly I don't have to go to terminal and go into su and give password but at boot on the Pinboard it it did pop up a box saying that boot manager wanted my root password which I gave. I should have tested if seamonkey was related to that one.

Another thing that will be interesting to compare them is at reboot.

I went to reboot Snow pup 17 and it said it needed the root password for to reboot. So now I reboot wary and see if that one also ask for root password to reboot. and then I test seamonkey again. I rebooted and Wary reboot without asking for root password

But it does ask for password if I want to look at my HDD which is owned by root then and Fido most likely own Spot??? Yes that is what I can look into without password and in terminal asking whoami

# whoami
fido
#

it says fido and show the hash instead of the USD dollar sign.

Snowpup don't ask for password. I log out now and check what whoami says in snow pup 17. Here I am in Snow pup and do the terminal thing

sh-4.1$ whoami
fido
sh-4.1$ firefox
Could not create gnome accelerators directory `/root/.gnome2/accels': Permission denied
sh-4.1$ su
Password:
sh-4.1# firefox

So to start up firefox I need to be root. That kind of makes it difficult for the newbie that feel the need to be a non priv user and not a superuser using firefox. Most likely then one need to do su and install firefox also in spot.

How does one do that?

Barry warn on his blog that one should not ask him about Fido.

fido is partly broken
Oh, I should add, please don't post any bug reports on fido. I know it is partly broken. The purpose of fido in this release is for anyone who wants to fix it.

If you are not in that "I can fix it" category, you can still try fido if you wish, but don't expect everything to work, and don't post here or the forum about what does and does not work. Thanks.

So I will not ask him or Pemasu either but here in Beginners I hope it is okay to ask general questions neither related to Wary nor to Snow pup particularily but how one use Spot when one is in Fido. Okay?

I think this Fido entry on Barry's blog is vital to read first.

Right from Puppy's inception, we have been criticized for running as root. I have finally decided to offer a choice.

i'm looking to see how fido turns out too...

I have mostly used Puppy, and never done any serious work on a proper multi user distro, except to use the GUIs to change setting and so on..

But I hope someone with a strong background in multi-user distros can help make fido bug-free, reliable, secure, and simple.

Thanks Scottman. So in which puppy OS has you tested it so far?

Wary and Snow seems to behave differently but none of their Devs want to go into Fido problems so maybe this thread here can be a summit or focus for those that feel for testing and to figure out how to change things until it works.

Snowpup allow me to save from Fido using Firefox into mnt/home

But after that I seems to only reach mnt/home if I start up root and use mount into that mnt/home on the HDD.

Wary don't allow Fido to use mnt/home but saves in Spot? I am not sure. This is way above my capacity to figure out things But I have checked in terminal that I am Fido when testing.

Important. in the comments to Barry's blog he explain that he doesn't want standard feedback on bugs unless one are prepared to contribute suggestions on how one can fix the bug. Which several seems to ahve missed and them just report bugs without saying how to fix them.

Like me they are bad at reading texts Smile

So read there suggestions or post suggestions on how to fix Fido but not just reports unless you know how to fix what you report.

That is why I started this thread so we have a place to report even if we fail to fix it.

one thing they suggested was to do changes in a file on permissions so we should try out that thing ASAP. Any takers?

There is a thread for to fix fido
Fixing Fido..
here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=71358

That one don't fill the need for people as noob as what I am.

okay maybe none else is as noob as I am but if you feel for it
then please do contribute to my thread which is not to fix fido at all
but to make oneself more familiar with using it daily.

The purpose is to learn and share together about
Fido and Spot for Beginners, Newbies and Noobs.

I am in fido now using Slacko puppy Beta II and I barely get things going.

So many new things to learn.

How to I get access to the internal hdd?

I need to answer the Admin password.

But even to find the hdd was difficult. I finally did it
ut don't remember how. Most likely I used pmount.

Kind of odd that everybody get upset over that Puppy is root from scratch and then when Barry make Fido that is so odd to them that them not even care to be happy and test it to help us know if it works for them?
