Advantages:
1. It's a lot lighter (written against xlib, IIRC)--it uses much less ram, and a lot less disk space ( the download is under 60 MB, and you can do a very minimal custom install)
2. It's faster
3. It's more MS compatible. This may be changing somewhat, but it tends to open everything, and handles most better than anything based on OpenOffice (I rarely see extensive formatting without extensive mutilation in OO)
4. Some of the features seem much better implemented
Disadvantages:
1. Super/subscripts are not properly supported; you have to set font size/placement instead
2. Middleclick paste is missing
3. It's closed-source
4. It's less broadly compatible: LibreOffice can handle newer documents, and more formats.
5. Less you can do: Only the windows version has BasicMaker; no plugins are supported; fewer applications (wordprocessor, spreadsheet, Presentations are all)
@Aragon:
I don't see any "limited time only" notice anywhere, and that's the site they used for Softmaker Office 2006. I think it may be long-term.

To whomever it may concern:
They are handing out coupons to those who downloaded the 2008 version. The coupon lets you purchase version 2010 for 20 USD (USA and Canada) or 18 euros (rest of the world). The 2010 has better support for more file formats.
This kind of program is important to me, so I bought it. I really like it, it is light and fast, a pleasure to use in contrast with bloated Open/Libre/Whatever Office. Finally, a decent Office application for Linux! It runs absolutely fine on Puppy Lucid 5.25. The installation is big, 320 MB, but I had no difficulty spotting all the UI localization, spell checking and multiple language PDF manual files. I paired it down to 115 MB. Big, but I really need it.
Maybe it can be turned into an SFS, but I still haven't gotten around to learning how to make an SFS. I wish their installation script would prompt for all that multi-language junk, let us select specific languages somehow. Nobody is going to use all of those.
The coupon is good until next Wednesday. The price doubles after that. Rush if you're interested.

I agree Luluc! I bought the 2010 version and am really happy with it.
Opens up .docx files and .xlsx files and does a better job of it than OO3.
I have mine in an SFS and have managed to get it down to 29MB (USenglish only) which means probably about 60MB uncompressed.

Everything seems to work fine, although I must confess I haven't used any of the templates even though I left the US english ones in.
I do prefer opensource but this company seems to have a pretty good attitude and I haven't found anything which matches this package's performance.

I too am a big Softmaker fan. Been using it since my Windows CE days. I even have a purchased copy for my Zaurus/QTopia.
But has anyone else noticed a jump in CPU usage when a user types in TextMaker 2008?
It's not such a big deal with beefier hardware, but I'm running a softmaker 2008 sfs in a Sony Vaio Picturebook PCG-C1VN circa 2000 w/ 114mbs RAM.
Softmaker runs fine, and once up and running, the cpu in conky is peaceful. But the moment I start to type...
Is this an issue for anybody else?

Thanks that list will be useful. I have bought a copy of SO 2010 for Linux too. I've been very happy with the 2008 version for a long time. I have had some major problems sometimes though, and I wonder if I'm alone with these. Basically, if I have several documents open in Textmaker 2008 at the same time, sometimes a corruption occurs between them - such that parts of one doc appear inside the other and in such scenarios sometimes the doc gets corrupted altogether and ends up unusable. Rather serious... That has occurred on a couple of occasions. I run SO on an old 256 MB RAM machine, under both Puppy Wary and Lucid (both frugal installs), so I wouldn't be surprised if the problem is something to do with RAM running out, though the corruption shouldn't be occurring anyway...
Oh well, still looking forwards to SO 2010, tho I can only hope it will not be too heavy for this old machine...

Yes, I'm looking forward. I'm must say that I'm quite happy with Softmaker Office 2010 which I bought.
However, it can't directly edit docx and xlsx, but imports it to it's internal format for editing...So, this 2012 version should enable direct editing of docx and xlsx...
Anyway, Softmaker Office is a great product.
