VLC has some great transcoding options, but you do really need to know what all the codecs and settings etc mean and do. For an easier time with file conversions, winff is great, with presets for many devices thrown in. Or even betterer is FFconvert, a puppy program by Shinobar. It has heaps of presets for Ipod type products, and many other hand held media devices. Check it out here...
