I downloaded a copy of Zorin 10, which is based on Ubuntu 15, yesterday and am using it now from a live session. So far so good (and it comes with Wine already installed).
Gigabyte M68MT-52P motherboard, AMD Athlon II X4 630, 5.8 GB of DDR3 RAM and a 250 GB Hitachi hard drive running Ubuntu 16.04.6, MX-19.2, Peppermint 10, PCLinuxOS 20.02, LXLE 18.04.3, Pardus 19.2, exGENT 200119, Bionic Pup 8.0 and Xenial CE 7.5 XL.

Does your ubuntumate offer an option to install to USBflash?
No, it's working well on the usb 3.0 SSD and I've installed other distros to an usb 3.0 hard drive, but not a flash drive.

I upgraded to Windows 10 on my HP Stream 200-009 mini which has 2gb ram.
It's working well with the new web browser, youtube videos play great at full screen.

EDIT: I've added the Windows version of some of my favorite Linux applications, all are working well.

Anyone tried it?
Trying this out as a hard drive install here is a scrot

Latest Firefox, Libreoffice, SpaceFM, etc seems very stable Mplayer replaced with MPV. requires PAE.

Kernel 4.0.4 smp i686 on a Dell D620.

As an experiment I'm trying to see how lean a desktop environment I can put together in Slackware (14.1) and still have a functional and convenient system. So far, I've been impressed with the twm window manager in conjunction with the dmenu utility I downloaded from suckless.org (and which accompanies the dwm tiling window manager).

They work well together, and all I had to do was add an entry in the twm config file to load dmenu whenever I want to open an application. With Seamonkey (from which I'm posting this), dmenu, Thunderbird, gkrellm and Textmaker 2012 all open, I'm using just 330 MB of memory.

windows 8.1 updates involutarily

#2033 Post by otropogo »

I decided to look at my uninstalled windows updates yesterday to see if any of them were worth installing.

I found one whose information told me that no further Windows security updates could be installed unless KB2919355 were installed first.

I then went back and forth from my list of installed and uninstalled updates looking for it, wihtout success.

This would not be difficult if I had access to the list in a browser or even a word processor, but Win8.1 provides no search option.

At some point, when trying to go from one list to the other, I hit install, thinking I would get a further option to view, before anything happened. Instead, a whole slew of updates, none of which I had selected, started to install, by the time I hit cancel the display read 30% completed, and at least a dozen updates, which do I know not what, because for most, their "more information" link (less would be impossible) leads nowhere or in circles, were installed, despite the cancel command.

I'm not even sure how many are installed, because the long list of failed and suceeded items is interspersed, and I don't see any option to save the list for viewing, searching and editing.

I guess Windows 10 would save me all this trouble. But I think I'd rather start looking at BSD or even a Mac for all connected use, and run Windows, for those apps in which I can't dispense with it (scanning, printing, OCR...) strictly offline.

The big problem with that plan is my Pegasus mail client, which runs only in Windows, and activation and upgrade requirements for other software.

So Windows 10 is never going to touch this PC with my permission. But who knows, maybe another Windows8 update will sneak it in without asking me.

new SliTaz version

new SliTaz version at http://mirror.slitaz.org

the driver for i915 (continue to) bug but you can over go that if, as the graphic cursor appears, you give 6..8 times fast Ctrl+Alt-Bspc . The console mode cursor will given to you and after login, you can actualize tazx and let select automatic the driver again. the good driver will be installed and the distro react really good. pls install manually, if you install. I find the new graphic installer is no success...

OpenELEC is a distribution for embedded home entertainment computers.

I downloaded the generic img of OpenELEC 5.95.4 and installed it to a
32gb SDHC card to use on an Acer Laptop.
Also downloaded the Legacy Nvidia img of OpenELEC 5.95.4 and installed
it to the hard drive of my Acer Revo nettop pc. (connected to a 27"
computer monitor)
It has kernel 4.1.6 and kodi version 15.1.

Both are working great.

Installation instructions are at the OpenELEC wiki.

Semplice Linux

#2041 Post by yerc1 »

Semplice Linux has been mentioned elsewhere in the forum, mostly by @jakfish.

It's a 'lightweight' distro that does not sacrifice ease of use, beauty, upgradeability (a rolling-release), stability (a main edition based on Debian Sid and Workstation edition based on Debian Jessie), etc.

Differentiation factor: bloat-free Vera desktop

I'm surprised it's not getting a good press that it deserves.

Yes, Semplice is very nice. And light; it runs fine with just 500M RAM. I use it with the testing repositories instead of sid to make it a little more stable. It was discussed here earlier this year: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=69050&start=1805

When I used to multi boot puppy and semplice linux using grub4dos. I installed semplice grub to the / partition. Not mbr.

Then chainload semplice in grub4dos and let semplice grub take over from there.

Code: Select all

title Semplice GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.2.0-3-486
rootnoverify (hd1,1)
chainloader +1

title Vector STD Gold 7 at /dev/sda2
rootnoverify (hd0,1)
chainloader +1

title Puppy Linux 529 frugal in sdb1 dir macpup529frugal
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
kernel /macpup529frugal/vmlinuz pmedia=atahd psubdir=macpup529frugal
initrd /macpup529frugal/initrd.gz
I was running bootups and operating systems on 2 different internal ide hard drives. Hence the (hd1,0) for one drive and and (hd0,1) for the other drive. No real fancy uuid needed or code lines needed with rootnoverify with semplice and Vector grub installed to root partition.

I boot Semplice directly using Grub4dos with this entry:

Code: Select all

title Semplice 7 (sda3)
  uuid cb134ac7-4f78-4bc6-8050-b6605a368b00
  kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda3
  initrd /initrd.img
Your uuid would be different, of course, as well as partition used in "root=/dev/sdaX". I found I needed the "root=" parameter or it would not boot. I let Grub4dos config detect Semplice and set up the menu.lst first, but changed the kernel and initrd lines to those above.

On one of my old computers, I also had to add the "nomodeset" kernel parameter or the resolution wasn't detected correctly by the new 4.1 kernel.
