I don't think the numbers etc. in that image file can be edited directly (using GIMP or something similar), otherwise I'd have a go myself. I may ask on the Mint forums if anyone's managed to do it. Thanks for replying anyway Bob.Moat wrote:Bummer, then. Unless you make/modify one yourself!

Porteus 3.2.1 CINNAMON x86_64 29 Nov '16 ISO
Hi all,
Below is a pic of the Porteus' gang latest 3.2.1 CINNAMON desktop, x86_64, 29 Nov 2016 ISO. Everything is based on Slackware 14.2 (USM Package Manager), and I gotta say, they really put together something nice here. Theme looks great, it still boots the lightening fast Porteus is known for, and it is smooth whether running off the SD card I installed it to, or running it fully in ram. The ISO comes 270MB. I installed (via the USM) the latest Firefox, Chrome, Mtpaint, Redshift & GTKHash modules, and it brought it all up ~390MB. With Gnome Player (and a lot of other stuff) already included by default, this Cinnamon edition is really nice. Congrats/Kudos to the Porteus team! Happy Holidays all!! (in the pic, the System Settings menu is on the left, the top right is Nemo file manager, below it is gnome-terminal, and then a shot of the taskbar menu with it resting on "Internet'.....it's a dual monitor setup, going right to left)

Everytime I see that background, I cannot help but think it is a Peppermint-based team, and not the antix/mx, distro. Maybe the two should merge, the Peppermint's team expertise in making a cloud-based distro with MX's team making a solid, middleweight nice linux distro. Well ,maybe not, then it would become a fat beast like a few of the alternative (outside the big dogs of Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, Debian and OpenSUSE) distros are becoming.James C wrote:Fresh install of MX-16.

Good for you nitie! I could never get MX-15 to install on my machine (the installer always got stuck on 3%), but MX-16 may be different and it's on my list of distros to try very soon, along with the latest version of Salix..nitehawk wrote:I pretty much use MX all the time now. Installed MX 15 some time ago,...and just keep upgrading it. Don't see the need for anything else, since this is working so well.
I've just installed the latest version of Siduction (LXDE version), and it's working well so far except that when you're installing it, it obliges you to choose a partition for your home directory which is different from the one you use for your root directory. Whilst this may be a good idea, I'd still prefer to have the choice.
I also recently installed the latest version of Absolute (which is based on Slackware) and it took quite a lot of fiddling about to get it to work. PulseAudio was broken on my system so I had to remove it and then reinstall it, and I also installed some software (such as Midnight Commander) which is included with Vector but not with Absolute.
Thundetbird kept segfaulting as well, so I installed a much earlier one (version 10). It's all working now though.
@belham2: that idea (of the MX and Peppermint teams merging) sounds like a good one to me.

I've just installed the latest beta of Vector Standard (1.1) and so far it's working well except that there's a slightly smaller pool of available software in the repository to install; I had no luck installing Osmo, for example, or Concentration (a memory game I play). I miss the old 'Quick Picks' utility Vector used to have which made installing extra software very easy and intuitive.
It also (still) won't set up access to pendrives or other partitions on the hard drive as and when you install it, so you have to edit the fstab file manually to allow that to happen.
From what I've seen on the Vector forum though, they're trying to move away from their original Slackware roots and become a more independent Linux distro.

They had the unprivileged user thing set at almost maximum annoyance. "raspberry" is long enough for a lot of annoyance, but to really seal the deal they should have made it a strong password. "Raspberry123*" or similar.
I liked it other than that. It was very bright and simple, obviously a lot of time had been spent on simplifying it with kids in mind.
I tried a few ways to debian dogify it, I got it to boot to desktop, but I don't understand enough to make it work correctly.

I've recently installed Salix 14.2 (only available with XFce now). I had a similar problem with PulseAudio in Salix as I had with Absolute; it broke and I wasn't able to adjust the sound levels when playiong videos, so I had to reinstall it (and also installed alsamixer as I like using that).
This PulseAudio fragility seems to be a problem with Slack-based distros and I'd guess it comes from Slackware 14.2 itself.
I've also downloaded Antergos 17.1 (another Arch-based distro) and tried to install it but the installer crashed; the devs did say though that it was beta quality software.

Hi all,
Solus (been, on & off, using it ~6 mths now) still proving to be a fun and interesting Linux OS with its Budgie DE environment. Hard to think of something more clear, simple yet beautiful. Hope all is well with everyone.

I'm back on Slackware 14.1 for the moment as I still can't get networking set up and running properly on 14.2. Since Slackware still includes Blackbox by default, I've installed a bunch of themes from 2005 so that it looks like the setup I had in 2005 on my *old machine; the setup is very economical on resources, as it had to be back then.
Would still like to find out what's going wrong in 14.2, but for the moment I can't really spare the time or trouble; maybe I'll try again later.
* I had a Pentium 100 with 32 MB of RAM, and was still able to run Opera. Those were the days! BasicLinux was a great distro for older computers; I don't know if it's still going, but I don't think it's been updated for a while.

Weird, I had a major problem getting networking to work in Arch. Networking works fine for me in Slackware 14.2, but then again it is running in virtualbox.Colonel Panic wrote:I'm back on Slackware 14.1 for the moment as I still can't get networking set up and running properly on 14.2. Info: Processes: 180 Uptime: 2:12 Memory: 677.7/3930.5MB Client: Shell (bash) inxi: 2.3.8
The full install has a lot of applications included +
Vlc-2.2.4,Kodi-16.1,Qupzilla-2.0.1 and more can be added with gslapt
package manager.
The installer will also do a basic install and another install (forget
what it's called) with fewer packages built in.
Edit: I did another "full" install to an HP desktop.
The 2 other install options are "core" and "basic".

Cent OS 7 with Ubuntu Mate desktop
Hi all,
Here's another sort of unique mix: CentOS 7 with Ubuntu Mate desktop. I set it up, on dual monitors & an old AMD cpu & motherboard for a long-term stable place (the definition of CentOS) to do all our video encoding for our Ipads/Itouch/Iphones using HandBrake. Still kind of weird getting my brain/eyes to remember that I am in a 'rpm-yum' OS and not an 'apt-get' OS. I mean, Mate is traditionally for Ubuntu/Deb-related distros. Mate comes here with the Yum Extender software program (basically a synaptic rpm model), and Caja, not exactly my favorite file mgr but it will suffice. All the other stuff is pretty normal for a MATE DE install. Anyhow, all is good, stable, and surprisingly customizable with this ole' trusty CentOS. Enjoy the pic!
