How to install stable Chrome 12.0.742.91.deb in Wary 5.0 and Quirky-130.

Downloads:
Chrome 12.0.742.91.deb from http://www.google.com/chrome/eula.html.
Google-libs-10.pet by GrumpyWolfe from http://sourceforge.net/projects/mywolfe ... t/download.
libpam0g_1.1.1-4ubuntu2.3_i386.deb from http://pkgs.org/download/ubuntu-10.10/u ... 6.deb.html.
zlib1g_1.2.3.4.dfsg-3_i386.deb from http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/i386/zlib1g/download.

Install downloaded packages by clicking them, one by one. Then, make relative link from /usr/lib/libz.so.1 to opt/google/chrome folder. Chrome is now ready to run, open console and type google-chrome.

Desktop icon: Open /opt/google/chrome folder, drag google-chrome.desktop to the desktop, right-click it to change name and set icon. There are product logos in /opt/google/chrome to use as desktop icon.

Flashplayer. Chrome 12.0.742.91 comes with latest flash 10.3.181.22. If you will, you can delete this libgcflashplayer.so from /opt/google/chrome folder, and then Chrome uses libflashplayer.so from /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins.

Locales. You can delete unnecessary locales from /opt/google/chrome/locales folder.

Chrome extension notscript. Install from https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... dajjpkkcfn, set password and then this extension blocks scripts.

Lucid: Not tested, maybe 10-libs (and other libs) not needed

No problems with Chrome 12x so far.

In Quirky-130 but not in Wary 5.0, browser informs at startup: "Google Chrome is no longer updating because your operating system is obsolete", and then: "Learn more": http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bi ... swer=95411.

You don't mention that Chromium usually protest about being root?

How did you solve that then?

I used wxHexEditor to edit the chrome executable in "/opt/google/chrome", this did the trick, works fine now, no message that it can't be run as root.

It wouldn't run for me, downloaded from your links and it wouldn't run as root, so I applied the fix that's mentioned in the link in my last post.

You have to teach us how to do it then Something odd is going on here that makes a difference then. What can it be that makes the same program act up on Geoffrey install and not on yours?

I know too little and are only curious because Rexbang is based on Lupu525 now so maybe it is Lupu511 and 525 that reveal that we are root while Quirky and Wary maybe keep that secret then?

It runs just fine on my Spup too Nooby. Dont know why. I installed it by tracking down missing libs etc, not from the .pets above though.

Maybe that explains it then. Does not both of you use direct sources and not the Puppy repo.

So something in the repo indicate for the Browser that it is starting from root while if one do as you and xman has done then it just works.

I am too computer challenged to do as you two suggest I barely get what you talk about. So I can not test this. Get more people to test it. Would solve a lot of problem.



I don't really have anything bad to say about Chromium but I do use FireFox due to habit more than that it is a better browser.

I used the above method to add Google Chrome to Snow Puppy. It worked so well that I used it on Rexbang as well. For some reason Google-Chrome 12 always crashes on me in Rexbang. It was useless to me and I ripped it out and replaced it with Firefox.

I did a manual remaster of Rexbang 2.3.2. I ripped out Google-Chrome and the scripts for starting the daemon for user "spot". I also edited the default browser file. I then manually copied all of the files listed above into Rexbang including the chrome executable that I edited as instructed in the first post of this thread. I found that some of the files were already in Rexbang but many were not.

The end result is I now have a remastered version of Rexbang with a working version of Google-Chrome 12. I am using it to make this post.

lol, effort != success I just did what I could to get Chrome running as best I could given the situation at the time. It's getting much easier to run Chrome than it was when 11 first dropped, especially now that the various workarounds that Google recommends actually, you know, work now

You don't need any of that spot stuff or special libs, command line switches, etc on the latest update of Chrome 12. DaveS disagrees with me, but I'm using it now with same defauiltbrowser etc I used w/ Chrome 10, which ran (and is running) very well "out of the box".

For a crap browser, there sure have been a lot of efforts to get it running well on Puppy.
