notes:
in lupu526
prepare the usb flashdrive in gparted > clear all partitions so it is just unallocated space, but make sure the partition table is there> use create partition table in one on the top drop down menus.
download and make backup copy of pussy.img.gz 530Mb.
click pussy.img.gz 530Mb and it will turn into pussy.img 699mb this takes a while so check in rox that it is in fact 699mb before you dd. it wont tell you when the extracion is complete.
usb flashdrive may not appear as icon on the desktop so remember from gparted what it is called. mine is sdd

then do the dd from a terminal opened in the directory where the pussy.img is located.
********** make sure you dd the .img NOT the .img.gz ********
# dd if=pussy-alpha-usb-full.img of=/dev/sdd
1431552+0 records in
1431552+0 records out
732954624 bytes (733 MB) copied, 264.052 s, 2.8 MB/s
#
dont know why it says 733 mb
still no icon on desktop (icon could have been behind pwidgets).
go into gparted and create a new partition and label it live-rw (see image attached.)
shut down. boot it.
in pussy:
select "live"
login: root
password: pussy
at prompt type> startx
select rox from meow menu
wifi add wlan0 to preferences
connects ok but no pages will load in cleanbrowser.
in the wifi thing tried combinations of numbers in dns, ip, dhcp, global something.
need more directions for filling out this wifi gui preferably with successful screenshots.

This looks intriguing, just downloading it now. I agree that the name has "connotations" though....

A quick update; sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but WICD doesn't seem to work on this machine so I wasn't able to get online with Pussy. Shame because it's a very promising project.

hi people

#95 Post by sickgut »

hello sry for late replys ive had internet access issues but im back now

this is the settings i personally use in WICD

ip: 192.168.1.50
gateway: 192.168.1.1
dns (this is the same as the gateway): 192.168.1.1

note the gateway and dns are the same ip and they are the ip of your router.
if you use global dns setting then fill in that space for it with the same ip, it will use the same dns for all your connections.
with most connection programs the dns and gateway are always the same i cant think of any reason or situation why someone would have it setup so they wherent the same, this causes problems because altho wicd is just being thorough it confuses people as most other programs dont need the dns thing.

if you want to use the commandline you can edit /etc/network/interfaces enter the ip info there except the dns, for the dns you edit or create a file in /etc/resolv.conf and enter only this info on the first line:

nameserver 192.168.1.1

no other info is required and if you add anything else it will mess it up.
the gateway ip uses the router to get and send traffic to the outside world but only via ip addresses, the dns or nameserver thing resolves the domain names to ip address so you can surf the net

Pussy doesnt HAVE to use WICD
if anyone knows of a better program to use then WICD that exists in the debian repos then let me know, if you want to help out on this issue then you dont even need pussy to findd the right program just setup a basic debian install and apt-get whatever program you think is better and if it works good with your system then let me know and i will include that in pussy, aparently it DOES make a difference to compatibility what connection program you use, just as using the commandline wireless tools to do ifup ifconfig etc works with most hardware but not all (doesnt work with my eeepc wireless but works fine on other laptops, when i used WICD it works however)

because i only have 3 types of computers here i cant test every network hardware and i can only make something work with what i got so i do need help in regards to this issue (unless someone knows how to port puppies connection programs to debian/ pussy?)

super awesome apt-get pussy powers dont work with no netconnection!!
so yeah i need yall to help me test alternatives to wicd, hell we can have more connection managers than one as well maybe we might need to have wicd + some other one that supports different hardware etc?

if your browsing the net for alternatives to wicd then i suggest http://packages.debian.org look in squeeze first as pussy is based on this however we can use any later program from wheezy or sid, hell we can even use etch or lenny maybe we need a really OLD wifi connection program for older stuff?

thankyou arf for explaining the .img installation, as i have trouble trying to explain things clearly. other then my little tinkerings i have no idea how a normal person uses aa computer and i may need input from the community to do propper and clearly explained non rambling howtos and instructions.

comming soon is the 67mb version and the 207mb version, but the pussyos and the pussyxtra squashfs files can be aded to these versions manually (207mb versionscontains the pussos already). Maybe separate development on the 3 main squashfs files in pussy needs to happen, the live system the basic os and the xtra apps. maybe the pussyxtra squash file should just be an addon to download separate so the standard size for pussy is 207mb. i am wanting feed back from pussy users in regards to this.. have your say, as all comments will be considered with all seriousness

pussy doesnt have to be called pussy.. (it will always be pussy to me but now that i have made this OS and have completed what i have set out to do for myself, I am willing to change the name and work on it and modify stuff depending on what the community would like.)

i like cats and a cat is close enough to puppy without being a puppy so maybe we can keep it cat themed?
there has been no interest in putting the puppy stuff on pussy tomake it a puppy so i think pussy does need its own name and separate identity

re: dd

#96 Post by sickgut »

dd seems to work on 1000kb to a MB and 1000b to a KB this is why it says 733mb instead of 699mb or something, a MB is really 1024kb

i chose 699mb for the partition on the pussy usb image because im trying to keep it close to the 700mb that pussy maybe if we make an ultimate livecd version and so the iso and the img should be same size to make thing more streamlined but i left 1mb out so we have some more room to do some fancy booting stuff if need be for the usb img version.

Distro Name

#97 Post by SouthPaws »

Are any of these acceptable...?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_cats

If not; then, how about these...?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_breeds

Maybe a combo name: (insert breed)-pup?

Lion-pup, Maine Coon-pup, Puma-pup, Savannah-pup, etc.

Greetings.
First of all, I find it awkward that half of this 7-pages-long thread is about this OS being called Pussy.
And now I'm contributing with one more post to make this even bigger.
I say that I couldn't care less about the name on a OS.
As long as it gets me to places and helps me do my stuff.
Hell, and I'm even allergic to cats.
And Sickgut has already emphasized that he's ok with changing the name.
So, please, let's drop that argument.
Second, let's get some Puppy Devs into this thread!
We need them here, we need them looking at how pussy does stuff (Apt).
We need them giving Sickgut advices.
I just can't believe that there isn't a single post from a Puppy Dev on this thread...
Third and last, I can't make wicd work on my laptop. I open up wicd, go to preferences, set wlan0 and it still says it can't find any wireless networks.
It is my understanding that other people in this thread can use wicd to find their wifi, they even can register to their wifi network, but then it simply doesn't work because they have DNS issues or default gateway issues.
Well, seems that my problem is a bit different.
BTW my laptop has an intel 3945 wifi adapter.
Here I can see that there are 2 drivers for my wifi adapter.
Could Pussy be missing both drivers?
Is there any manual way of checking if drivers/modules have been loaded?
TIA
Cheers

Personally I say keep the name.
It will intrigue more people than whining wowsers.

As long as it works.

Ok, about my pussy wifi issues, I thought I'd paste here a full dmesg right after my computer finishes booting pussy:
http://pastebin.com/1NbSzx76

And this is a dmesg after I setup wlan0 as my wifi adapter:
http://pastebin.com/2UCDwcFd

Does this help figuring out what's wrong?
Bear in mind that my adapter is an intel 3945 which should work with either ipw3945 or iwlwifi.
TIA
Cheers

I would just like to let you know, that here in the USA, the word "pussy" is used highly inappropriately and offensively. Type "Pussy linux" in google" too see what i speak of.

Other than that the OS is good 8)

While it is true that the word "pussy" has
been given new meanings as slang we
should not be fearful of using the word
in its original and legitimate sense.

What is intended to be "offensive" or
"inappropriate" is generally readily
discernible through subject matter and
context.

It would be a shame to lose another good
word to the "word hooligans."

Ok, it works now with the help of chum_bucket.
Searched for the files in this wiki http://packages.debian.org/lenny-backpo ... i/filelist.
Since I couldn't find them had to install the firmware files using this package http://packages.debian.org/lenny-backpo ... i/download
Launched 'Network' applet again, configured wlan0, my networks appeared, selected my network AND had to manually set the DNS server with the same IP of my router (as Sickgut had already mentioned) and write down my WPA2 passphrase. Also, I set the 'automatically connect to this network'.
Restarted the 'Network' applet and voila, wifi working.
Piece of cake.

Darn.
Something must have got corrupted on my Pussy usb pendisk.
Yesterday it was working fine.
Had already installed iceweasel, irssi, acpid and I saved to file without any issues.
Today I booted again from my pen and it just seems that my savefile is either missing or corrupted because my wifi is gone again and when I startx, I don't see any Pussy stuff, only JWM stuff and ROX filer is missing.
I'll reflash Pussy on the usb disk and start all over to see if it happens again.
Cheers

missing menu stuff

#107 Post by sickgut »

john3voltas: this issue with the jwm menu thing is addressed in the patch on the site, download it follow instructions, basicly its a replacement template for the jwm menus, other wise when you install new stuff all the custom pussy entries are lost as it rescans all the programs you have installed and sets up a completely new menu system its a reall pain in the butt how it does that, but yeah install the patch and your menus will be back. This menu issue can kinda make it look like you lost your save file but everything will be fine again after the application of the patch

after you install it (just dragging one file to a dir like is says in the instructions), just type in a teminal: update-menus
restart your x session and you wont have that jwm menu problem again, it will remember everything you had before and will update correctly from now on, ofc this patch will be in the next version.

once this is all working have a look at your WICD thing again let me know if any trouble. I may only be here every 2nd day at the moment till i get my own internet plan

What about the firmware files missing?
Many wifi adapters need firmware files to work in Linux.
It's not like upgrading their firmware, it's something very close to a driver.
Can you take a closer look to this?
Oh, and how's the new Alpha/Beta coming?
Are you keeping a change log that you can share with us?

online help

#110 Post by sickgut »

Just a note to help people with online support:

Pussy IS debian and there is nothing that makes it NOT debian, its just a lot of debian thats been made to kinda try to look and work like Puppy.
This means that you can get support (wifi seems to be a support "hot spot" :) ) from the debian and debian life IRC channels.

the debian one is on the same freenode server as the puppy one so when you login to puppy support irc just type /join #debian and you will then have debian support line. Carefull tho they are kinda uptight there and all chatting has to be on topic, not as friendly as the Puppy community im afraid. Puppy community rocks compared to any other community, seriously it does.

The other help line is the debian-live one. This is more use full for stuff like save files and other help or setting up partitions to use with the debian live or things like the custom boot codes etc etc

irc.debian.org #debian-live <--- this is where to get debian-live help.

If things get technical then you might need to provide some info for them to help you.

kernel version: debian squeeze 2.6.32-5-bigmem
The /usr/share/doc/ dir is empty (to save space)
The default boot tags are: noautologin swapon quickreboot noprompt (toram is added to this when you boot with the copy to ram option)
