#841 Post by Snail »

Just to confirm that I also get the VPAU error without using or installing any video players.

Thanks for the Pfind fix Rerwin. :)

xerrs.log messages.

Example of are they good or bad?
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 331#547331
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

For adventurous testers. Gparted-0.9.0

Code: Select all

./configure --prefix=/usr --build=i686-t2-linux-gnu --x-libraries=/usr/X11R7/lib --x-includes=/usr/X11R7/include --disable-libtool-lock --disable-doc --disable-scrollkeeper --enable-libparted-dmraid

Great Pemasu, Gparted with NLS! Thank you.

There's an official warning though not to use 0.9.0 for resizing NTFS partitions...( I don't have ntfs, but many here probably will..)
NOTE: Please use GParted Live 0.8.1-3 or 0.8.1-6 if you need to resize NTFS.
See Bug #655215 - NTFS partition resize fails with GParted Live 0.9.0-6.

General knowledge has been long that resizing ntfs should be left for windows partition applications. I have followed that advice all the time.
But it is good to know that problem. I didnt notice that warning.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted ... ME.md/view
I have confirmed that there certainly does seem to be a problem with this new
GParted Live 0.9.0-6 image which uses the ntfsresize command version
2.011.4.12AR.4 (libntfs-3g).
This problem does not occur with GParted Live 0.8.1-3 which uses the ntfsresize
command version 2.0.0.
In Lucid Puppy 266:

Code: Select all

sh-4.1# ntfsresize
ntfsresize v2.0.0 (libntfs 10:0:0)
Follow debate in Gparted pages:
Downgrade to ntfsprogs 2.0.0 is just a workarround IMO. The ntfsprogs 2.0.0
code is unmaintained since ages. ntfs-3g_ntfsprogs is where the development goes now.

Hi Marcos. Yes the downgrade to ntfsprogs 2.0.0 would be temporary until
ntfs-3g_ntfsprogs can get the problem fixed.

The old ntfsprogs has not been enhanced for a few years but has proven to be relatively robust. As such I think it might be the best interim solution.

I used gparted 9.0 in fatdog64 beta5 to resize this drive and nothing bad has happened yet, here's hoping.

edit: I rebooted the pc and when it went to load windows it loaded
some files and wanted to restore windows to the hard disk, I made the
restore dvds yesterday but I rebooted with my fatdog dvd instead, ran
gparted and made 4 ext4 partitions on the drive.

So, if you like windows don't use gparted to resize an ntfs partition.

Well. Even Barry Kauler used windows application to shrink his new computer ntfs partition. Usually shrinking the existing partition with OS has been the culprit. I have encountered it also. Defragmenting the OS partitition first and then shrinking has not been always succesful.

Even in the Windows world, I have seen warnings that if a ntfs is used for some time, files could be at the end of the partition and resizing could cut off useful info.
There are defrag programs, that not only defrag, but also optimize and push files to the beginning.

Would be nice if a gparted and/or related program does the same.

'extention tar.z ignored' corruption of xerrs.log - Solved

#850 Post by rerwin »

playdayz,
Although cleaning up the error messages from the "-wrap.sh" scripts appeals to me as a programmer, I have a more expedient solution to the log trashing. The script issues the error messages because it expects to see a script named "compress", to go along with "uncompress". Rather than touch xarchive's friends, in the attached package I provide the required script, derived from "uncompress". And it actually works.

I see no evidence that it has been in puppy since 4.3.1, and probably never has been. The trashing threat has always been there, apparently, but hardly anyone noticed. With the package installed, no error messages to mess up the log! And a command-line way to zip-compress files in place.

As I posted earlier, I was getting the error just by using SeaMonkey.... no multimedia apps involved.
Yes Béèm and James C. Good sleuthing. Seamonkey uses gecko-mediaplyer which uses gnome-mplayer. I am using the next version luci-267 and I am not seeing the problem.

Help -> About Plugins in Seamonkey will show that.

And Béèm, Seamonkey 2.2 is way much faster than Seamonkey 2.0.x. Faster even than Firefox 5 on some measures! I mention it because I think it is wonderful to see a fast Seamonkey.

See above. I think it was probably gecko-mediaplyer throwing the message to xerrs.log instead of flashplayer. Let me try something.

Yikes Using flashplayer to start a youtube video seems to have wiped the whole xerrs.log. It was *not* gecko-mediaplyer that did that. Well, we know flashplayer is an ill-behaved program anyway and at least it plays the videos.

<Add> It did not wipe the xerrs.log--it still shows a size--but it won't open as text in geany.

<Add2> Yes. Flashplayer does produce those errors, even when I removed gecko-mediaplyer. So it looks like we fixed them with gnome-mplayer and gecko-mediaplyer but not with flashplayer.

@pemasu,

Thank you for this update, it appears to work fine, although the docs are not linked to the application.

Cheers,
Jim

Jim1911. As my ./configure showed. I compiled it without documentation purposely.
That DOC pet is automatically created by splitpkg script and it has those legal notes etc...

playdayz, if you need a nature wallpaper this photo might be good

Here's my screenshot with it, but my desktop is rather minimal so you might try it with desktop icons

Gparted 0.9.0

On my Luci266 the Gparted-NLS is not functional.

The gparted.mo is there in /usr/share/locale/nl/LC_MESSAGES.., but after refrehing WM, rebooting, Gparted is still in English.

I even rebooted with pfix=ram, to make sure it was not caused by something I had done in my save file.

Is there something additional that needs to be done?

Has anyone tried the NLS?
Thanks!

I had so much fun chasing that vdpau message that I got a headache!

In the upcoming RC, gnome-mplayer does not generate the message nor does Firefox. Opera does generate the message. Seamonkey may generate it only with flashplayer not gecko-mediaplyer, I can't quite remember. That's enough for me.
