puppy rescue os

#1 Post by DPUP5520 »

PupRescue is intended to be a rescue tool for Windows systems that may have crashed, gotten a virus, or just need to be cleaned out. Includes many rescue tools as well as tools to wipe hard drives, clone drives, find duplicate files and even recover lost files.
Of course most of these tools are not limited to Windows (except the ones that are) so they can be used for helping recover pictures , files , rescuing partitions and cloning drives from a number of different distros including Puppy itself.
Sorry if the description is a bit off or kind of random, not so good with explaining things.

Please download try and criticize so I know what needs to be fixed/updated or any other features that would make this easier/better to use for all.

PupRescue-2.3 is out, it is the finalized version of PupRescue and is based on 528 and includes all fixes from 1.0b, some programs were removed/added, and icewm was set as the default wm.

PupRescue_2.5 is now out , it is much smaller than 2.3 but includes much less programs (trying not to be too redundant) and includes some patches/fixes from 2.3.

Why don't you list what you have already planned to add and then we can tell you what else would be nice to add.

A good web browser like FireFox, Iron, are SeaMonkey would be nice.

How different will it be different from R.I.P. Linux or Attack Pup?

1. I will be updating all of the built in utilities for repairing windows already in Puppy that need it.
2. Chntpw, ophcrack, and jtr will be for cracking Windows passwords
3. both versions of ddrescue will be included
4. duff will be included for finding and wiping duplicate files
5. smartmontools and it's gui will be included for checking the hd
6. pdfcrack and rarcrack will be included for recovering files from those formats when passwords are lost.
7. Testdisk and Photorec
8. Teamviewer for remotely working on boxes
9. Safecopy
10. Icecat will probably be the browser and Carrier the i.m. client since they're my favorite
11. dares for recovering files from cd/dvd
12. sdw/nwipe/dwipe to securely wipe hard drives
13. Will be replacing Sylpheed with Spicebird
14. Will have lshw gui for checking system hardware.
That's only a small list of what I have so far but i'm typing from my Xoom right now so it's kinda hard to give a full list especially from memory but it gives you a good idea of the type of software im planning on including. I am not planning on this being small and as is will probably be made to run from the cd rather than ram since im guessing it's going to be around 300 to 350MB by the time i'm done.

I don't know much about R.I.P but it will be Nothing like Attackpup, that was made to be like a mini Backtrack while mine will be specifically to help repair broken systems or systems where you may have forgotten a password for a user account or encrypted file. I'm not a fan of fancy things either so there won't be really anything to set it apart visually from other Pups , just a mass ton of recovery/repair software in one place to help make peoples lives easier when trying to fix a box.

It would be able to make an attempt (using John and a text dictionary).

Sounds useful and a great project. As far as what to include, seems different kernels have different native wifi drivers. In new HP notebooks, at least the one I'm stuck with, have Broadcom Corporation Device [14e4:4727] using the wl.ko driver. Have most problems with newer pups such as 26.38...version kernels. In Fluppy 13, Puppy 5.2 and earlier, and the Snow Puppy series are no problem. Attack Pup IIRC no problem but LightHouse, squeezed 499.2 was no go. I have not been able to compile the driver myself so it's inclusion would be my suggestion.

I'm not so great with compiling drivers myself as whenever I've needed Wifi or Ethernet drivers i've gotten them from someone else, however this will be based off of 5.25 since pemasu was so kind as to give me the drivers I needed to get my wifi and ethernet cards working in it and i've already done a lot of tinkering in 5.25 so I feel most comfortable basing any work of that. I may do one off of an older Puppy too later for older computers however all the programs that I have right now and have compiled were compiled with the five series so I'm gonna stick with that for now, if anyone has drivers that they would need included to work in 5.25 add the pet here to the thread and I will add them in.

pemasu is a good guy all around and especially with drivers got several from him myself.

DPUP5520 if you base off of 5.25 using I suppose EZ-Woof-525 it is 2.6.33 kernel IIRC then I should be go to go. The only driver pets I have are from pemasu's builds in kernel 2.6.38...s which are of no use. I'll check it out when your ready and give a report. thanks jim

Could you include the drivers for the Edimax usb antenna that sneekylinux recommended in one of his videos?

It works great in Ubuntu & other debian based distros (which have all stopped working with my ethernet), but not with Puppy (which loves ethernet).

" im planning on creating a puppy specifically for rescuing windows PCs "

As you may know I use the Falcon and Hiren's,
as well as Puppy.

"""

You were going to look at Hiren's.

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 1&start=15

Did you, because it sets high standards on rescues..

"""""

Under >> Other Tools >> it now runs Parted Magic 6.1

http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd

////////

I make a multi-boot usb so that they work on netbooks.

USB is needed 4 netbooks.

And the Hirens method boots them brilliantly.

http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd-on-usb-disk

"""""""

Interestingly I've discovered lately, that my little Acer netbook only
wants to run on a 4 gig USB.

Updated the bios on another of the same model,
but the same issues....

And on other model Acer netbooks.

Notebooks >> any model ...no failures with 4 - 8 - 16 gig usbs.

""""""

If you can incorporate Konboot...that would be good.

Hiren's and Falcon have terrific networking, and that
includes wireless.

It's important....Vital....that you can download apps
to an infected computer...from a Rescue disk.

TDSSKiller may be needed.

Just some thoughts....Chris.

I have been in the process of a move for the last few weeks and currently have no house so i havent been able to get much done (all my posting is from my Xoom). I'll probably have something out by Sunday though, its not meant to be prety but rather just a simple remaster with a lot of recovery and repair software i've compiled and a different WM(most likely icewm).
I figure it will be about 250 to 300MB depending on what I leave out and will run directly from the cd. Although i highly discourage going online with it or installing it i will leave those options in.

Edit: i also have Registry-tools-4.0.0Alpha compiled which will be included

Alright so I finally finished compiling all the programs and getting a bunch of issues sorted out, as I've said before this is just coming out as a remaster not a full blown built from the ground up derivative however it is just as effective just not as nice looking as some others. I'm currently uploading to my dropbox so it will be ready for download soon. I currently do not have a list made of what programs are included but I will do so as soon as I am able to. There are only three issues i've really seen so far which are:

1. Icons are missing at boot in the menu, must run fixmenus to get them to show
2. IPMonitor does not work, that is because it is a java program and I left java out, put IPMonitor in by mistake and will remove it later
3. I had to make it load into ram because for some reason when I left it to run from the cd I had a bug where the Rox Pinboard would not mount and left me with a blank screen until I ran fixmenus and restarted the x server.

I've also left the default WMs in instead of putting in Icewm as It was also giving me some problems but will switch over later when I can get all issues resolved.

did frugal hdd manual install. wl.ko driver not supported used broadcom pet available on this board for 2.6.33.2 kernel. then able to connect to the internet without issue.

Truecrypt asks for password when call up user guide. What is it?

Truecrypt when click on FAQ or help calls up browser chooser even though icecap is installed.

xstreg when clicking appears to do nothing.
