Thank you. I know it's a pain having to register Avast every time you boot up but it's way better(more accurate) than F-Prot and way smaller than AVG so I prefer it. BTW you might wanna upgrade the Flash if you plan on installing PupRescue frugally due to the zero day exploit that was just found on the version of Flash that PupRescue uses.

Does PupRescue ask if you want Flash or not, the way standard Puppy does? That'd be nice, for example I have no use for Flash at all, and even less given the latest in a long line of exploits.

(Someday more people will give up on Flash just because they want their distro to live up to its promises of being more secure than Windows, but asking before running/installing is a good compromise for now.) And yes, I'm totally implying that people are making their systems closer to Windows vulnerability-wise by running Flash, although I would still trust that over Windows and its many other deliberate holes.

DPUP5520,

I'm sure the tools you've added in this puplet will come in very handy for me when I need to troubleshoot down the road. I thought this puplet would be more of a barebones puppy with rescue tools added on, but I was surpised to find that it is a full Lucid Puppy along with those tools and apps. Thanks for your efforts in making this. I would never have known about the majority of those tools if you hadn't made Puppy Rescue OS.

Well done! :)

One suggestion I would like to add for improvement is to make a list of the tools you've added along with a brief description and the terminal commands on how to run those tools. Perhaps editing the Puppy Jumping Off page would be a good place to put that info.

@faifpuhp no it does not , Flash is built into the distro so it does not ask you if you want to install Flash or not. However since I originally intended this to only be run live without a save file I was not really concerned about the vulnerability aspect.

@Tman The list on the first post has all the included/modified programs that are in PupRescue, when I get a chance I will list the commands to use them and also include commands for built in rescue/recovery programs for Puppy that I haven't modified. I am going to include a barebones type version with less tools and a stripped down Puppy im just waiting for Hondasid's Barebones 528 to come out as he does a much better job at stripping down Puppy than I can do.

thanks for the heads up - I wasn't aware of that exploit.
I have a frugal installation with a pupsave (I created a multiboot USB with Yumi). I'll get on with the flash update tho'
I personally really like the 'full' experience of your distro - great to have the rescue tools but just as great to have firefox/write etc built in.

May I ask a nosy question. impolite even ?

Now and then or maybe only when one want to save to an encrypted
save file but maybe even at other times even Puppy tell us that we need a
defragged hdd to do the saving on.

Likewise when one need to do a iso boot or something then the programs
asks if one have a big enough defragged part of teh partition for them to use

So my question is. Does it have a defragger that one don't need to boot up in Ms Windows for to use?

Thanks darkcity

@nooby To put it simply there is no way to do a true defrag from Linux for Windows, however if you are worried about the filesystem getting corrupt from resizing or the like you can run ntfs-fix which is much the same as Windows chkdsk command.

Thanks that helps with a file that already exists then?
While a true defrag move things around? To fill the gaps.

Now I know. One should boot into Win XP light that exists on Hiren's
rescue or something like that one and maybe these have a defrag prog?

okay to something else. Rescuing from malware.
PupRescue is intended to be a rescue tool for Windows systems that may have crashed, gotten a virus, or just need to be cleaned out.
Yes that is why I asked recently about the thread where someone linked to a text online about different AV for linux or Unix varieties.

Bitdefender seems to have got highest votes but Avast came in as a good second best.

F-prot from Frisk Protection company was not even considered?

I spent some 4 hours trying to find that thread again and asked around
but none seems to remember it.

Them gave examples how one did an install of avast. Rather tricky one needed to write something in a file?

So what about tjhis rescue pup. Has it Avast in it from scratch? or is it easy to install it. Maybe the text file mention it. Sorry me drown in all such texts. But if it has a alphabetical list then Avast comes high or in the beginning.

I don't know if Hiren's can defrag windows or not sorry. Yes avast if fully installed in PupRescue and patched to fixed the update bug(patch is in the startup folder), however u have to email avast to get a key to be able to use it. As I just mentioned in the other thread bitdefender is not free and to loop the trial version of it would be illegal.

Thanks that is why I asked around for Avast so eagerly.

Now I have your Puprescue installed on a Packard Bell A6 Laptop 13" screen.

But to my horror I read this :)
since I originally intended this to only be run live without a save file I was not really concerned about the vulnerability aspect.
Ooops and I have already made your puprescue to my main puppy on that machine due to it had that rescue thing. But I agree it is meant to be a rescue distro so I am on my own then.

Any ideas what I have to look into. Now I reuse the old Lupu528 savefile.

I guess that would work okay? It did not even notice anything was different and just booted as usual. Same background as I have chosen and everything looks like it should.

So now I only need to learn that bleachbit thing. and to get the avast code.

Lol what I meant mostly by not being concerned about vulnerability is that it has programs installed such as Flash, and the shockwave plugin and an unsecured Pidgin instead of a more hardened browser and encrypted chat and email, this is no less secure than your standard Puppy (excluding the unpatched Flash being built in which u can easily update).

Edit: btw nooby no it's not a new distro it's classified as a derivative/puplet just like most of the others on here and has many customizations aside from just throwing a bunch of programs in and being done, the only difference is I took a base 528 and customized it from there instead of building from scratch, that's why the lupu-528.sfs is not changed to reflect the PupRescue name.

Thanks Chris. Yes I know them try to include such in the rescue CDs.

So is it something one start up in Xp-lite or in DOS? Okay just me lazy.
I try to google it. I have a Hiren CD laying around somewhere. So just me very lazy.

Dave thanks Yes I get that. I would have done the same I guess.
Why make things complicated if them already work okay.

I thought about the criticism you got that now when it has these added features then it is too big to run in his DRAM did he have 525 or 256?

Could one maybe make SFS on most big files that one don't need instantly so if one want a special thing them one just do the SFS on the fly thing?

That way not everything need to be in memory? Or maybe me know too little.

Or u could boot with the pfix=nocopy option.

Ah pfix=nocopy which means "do not copy .sfs to RAM"
I never tested that one. So tjat gives that guy more memory
but a bit slower boot because it has to get it from the sfs
and that one is a zipped file system. I have 1GB so that works okay.

I do have an old 2002 something HP/Compaq that only have 256 MB though. But it is noisy So I don't want to use it.

Almost right, it's actually a faster boot because nothing has to be copied to ram however it's slower in actually running the os because everything is run off of the cd and not from ram.
