Wrestling with OS

#1 Post by Lobster »

Yesterday I had a look at an old HD with failing Windows on it.
Four hours later I had at internet connection with IE only and no ability to install any new programs. OK I may go in again and read and save some data - in fact may do this from Puppy.

The best I can say is if XP or Windows works it is very pleasant to use. If it goes wrong and eventually this can happen then fixing it is no longer a simple procedure.

The new Vista (delayed again) is even more complex. What is an OS? It is a means to run software. That is why I like SimplePup (still using 0.3.1)

I no longer wish to wrestle with MS.
I know some people are still dual booting or using Windows at work but I much prefer to work towards an MS Free zone.

I have been with Windows from version 1 (I immediately thought it had more potential than Gem which I was using) but its day is done

With Puppy we have "woosh" technology (that is it runs in Ram and is fast)
We also have Simple and reliable

Simple is better than complex
Reliable is better

I don't understand why MS wasted their time with gimicks like tilting windows. What's the point? How will that help me get my essay written on time? Just a gimick to jack up the price and ensure that I don't ever buy it.

By the time MS get's Vista out the door, it'll already be behind. Gentoo will be bleeding, and Puppy will be within a month or so (any amount it is behind in areas now will have been made up by then). Factor in the growing awareness and support for Linux, and MS is gonna be hurtin'. Not to mention Vista's bloat. Especially if you want the gimicks. Though by the time they get it done, hardware might be an order of magnitude better than its reccomended specs.

Pick up the pace, Bill, or the hounds will catch you

Don't worry - anyone smart enough to try Puppy or read these Fora isn't going to be dumb enough to run Vista, but just in case of hesitancy, this:

There will be prizes for anyone able to boot Vista on a 486DX with 32Mb.....

I remeber when I first had a computer...the OS was DOS...plain old simple DOS...and I'd probably still be happy with that today really, but the big companies, Adobe, Macromedia, etc, aren't writing for DOS. I miss the simple days...

I enjoy Linux though :D

It was adequate for most operations. DRDOS introduced multitasking, too. Another reason why Billyboy killed them - M$DOS couldn't do it. Urban myth that this was a 'doze innovation.

It seems as though this puppy is attempting a (MS) screen-dump!
