Darkplaces is an enhanced Quake1-engine with nicer Lighteffects.
http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/

Nehahra is an epic "mod" for quake1, that's to say an own game.
http://www.planetquake.com/nehahra/xstory.html

UPDATE: new engines and mods - Download/more info:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=57637#57637

Included is also the OpenQuartz-glx engine.
This is an older, but very fast version of darkplaces, that works great with nehahra.

Those versions have some more grafics-effects in the options, but are slower.
For example "Bloom", which is a kind of glow for lights.

You will need a graficscard with hardware-accelleration:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=8661

-----------
Iif you have soundproblems, use the "-sdl" buttons in the launcher. These require this Dotpup:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Games/LibSDL1.2-forDoom.pup

------------
Tip:
The newer Darkplaces ran quite slow on my system by default.
In the options, I deactivated "Detail-textures", then it works much better.
But the OpenQuartz-glx is even faster!

I added a 4-hour-Movie "The Seal Of Nehahra".
It is 420 MB extracted!
So be shure to have enough free space in your pup001 (you will need 100 MB more temporarily during installation).
Note that the installation might last several minutes, so wait patiently until just receive the final message "Finished! you can uninstall with PupGet"

To watch it, start darkplaces with "nehara", and go to "Demos".
After 1 -2 hours, it will crash.
This is a bug in the episode"Ancient ruins".
Restart, and choose the next demo then.

http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Games/quake1/nehara-movie-addon--420MB--.pup (94 MB)
UPDATE: removed for webspace-reasons.
Temporary upload on request.

If you want to skip the scenes while playing, do this:
Open the console in the options.
Type to deactivate the movies:
cutscene 0
To reactivate them:
cutscene 1

There is a problem with Nehahra using the Shareware .pak.
After the Episode
Forge City3 : Escape
Quake will end with the standard Shareware-message.
It does not recognize you play a completely new game, it thinks you play Quake itself.

So you will have to load the next map manually.

Open the Quake-console in the options.
Now first, you should bind a key for easy access.
Enter
bind "#" toggleconsole

Now you can show/hide the console with the "#"-key.
To load a map, enter
map MAPNAME

Instead of MAPNAME use one of the following.
Example
map neh1m4
will continue after "Forge City3 : Escape".
Unfortunately you will loose all weapons you won before Confused

I have tried to download the darkplaces and nehahra pup 5 times and every download has an error message when I try to run the dotpup. It tells me to dwonload the pup again. Any suggestions?
Thanks

I wrote a "launcher" for the Darkplaces-engines in PuppyBasic, that makes it very easy to play mods you download from the web.

Read the included "HowTo" to get info how to install a mod.

I already created one as a Dotpup (though the installation of Zips is really easy):

Short review:
http://amc.planetduke.gamespy.com/index.php?page=reviews&id=174

Here is a good place to get more mods:
http://www.planetquake.com/underworld/qclassics.html
This repository might have nice ones, too:

I finally got the 3d rivers to load, but quake2 is still looking for the libvga.so.1 file, and will not work. I guess I'll give up trying.

lostdog, be proud, you found a bug.
I don't know if you meant libvga.so , might it be you had problems with libGL.so?

Here, use this wizard, to install the files you need.
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=8661
Also try 16bit or 24bit colordepth of your display.

I completely repackaged everything.

Quake1.pup (16 MB)
- the "Base", required for gameplay. Has a easy to use launcher. Includes the Demo-version and some small mods.
Beside glquake, it includes darkplaces and openquartz, some enhanced Quake-engines with better grafics.
Also included is demonquake, but without the high-quality data-pak (too large for a base-pack).
I added some few(!) files from the full version to avoid crashes of some engines, but for copyright-reasons I did not include the levels.
So to play all Quake1-episodes, you must buy the full game, you cannot play them with my modifications only.
There is another famous compilation that adds the full pak1.pak from the commercial Quake1, what is kind of unfair, as it keeps you away from honoring ID-Softs great step of licensing their game-engines under the GPL by buying Quake1 to play all included levels.
Again: To play the full Quake 1, or to support ID-Soft if you play many mods, please buy Quake1 Exclamation

optional: Quake1-highresolution-textures-addon.pup (120 MB)
- This makes Quake1 look much more detailed with Demonquake and Tremor, highly recommended if you have place for 120 MB of textures...

optional: Quake1-highquality-addon.pup (75 MB)
- this adds files to make demonquake look nicer.
And it adds "Tremor" and "Tenebrae".
Both are high-end engines, that require fast graficscards (a Ati Radeon 9250 is ok).
Tremor has some nice textures, the weapons look better.

Tenebrae makes Quake1 look like Doom3 - with bumpmapping and reflections.
Depending on the mod you play, that looks totally exagerated, or really cool.

These 2 screenshots show OpenQuartz and Tenebrae with the included mod "starship":

In addition, I added more than 10 additional mods from very small to very huge.
They all can be started from my Quake1launcher, that is used in Quake1.pup.

16 MB - hey, that's an easy dotpup to download, even on dial-up.

If I were the game kid, I will just download it and play - or perhaps I should have a checklist of other requirements about my system? Very Happy Perhaps I can try:

1. 3D card at least 128-bit and 8 MB memory ?
2. 3D driver for my card from ?

(Sorry, Mu, here's a busy old guy pretending to be a kid Smile But if there are really easy answers, I can just go fragging at break time. Cool )

glquake (which is in Quake1.pup) should work on any system, as long as libGL.so is installed.
If it is playable or not (concerning speed) - just try.

But the fun begins with accelerated drivers:
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=8661

All the other engines certainly will require accelleration because of the special effects they provide.
