Three-Headed Dog 5.2.8.005 Updated APR 25 2012

#1 Post by playdayz »

Three-Headed Dog 5.2.8.005 Updated ISO APR 25, 2012 - Luci-001.005
Three-Headed Dog is based on Lucid 5.2.8 but with the 2.6.37.6 kernel from Slacko 5.3.1. Some newer computers might work better with 3HD than with Lucid 5.2.8.005.

The big news is that Help is working in Abiword and Homebank and the web links are working in many (or all) programs Help -> About. More big news is that there is a Libre version with Libre Office 3.5.2 installed and integrated with the desktop

3HD Version 5.2.8.005 Updated ISO -> http://diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/luci-001.005.iso
md5 checksum -> f7a854546101a8d4fddb2f8b2cab1fd2

Since Three-Headed Dog has a different kernel than Lucid the Lucid video drivers won't work.

The ATI fglrx driver from Slacko works for my HD 3850 card.
ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet ... 37.6-s.pet

Xorg_High will still work for everything but Nvidia cards--but even that would be worth testing.
ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet ... -Lucid.pet

Nvidia drivers: Look in Slacko 5.3 repo ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet ... es-slacko/ Use nvidia drivers for 2.6.37.6.

[Outdated old version of Libre Office] 3HD Libre Version 5.2.8.005 Updated ISO -> http://diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/lucilibre-001.005.iso
md5 checksum -> 80c9e092caa74b15c61ea32ae674f04b
Some features of Libre Office require java. Lupu Plus Libre includes java--you can add java to 3HD Libre from here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 455#623455 or the java pet in PPM. Don't forget to Quickpet -> More Pets -> Update Lupu PPM.

Version 5.2.8.005 Updates: ffconvert 1.2.1 - shinobar; PupControl 2.0 - radky; mtpaint 3.44.3 - don570; PupApps 1.8 - radky; Pburn 3.5.2 - zigbert; PupSysinfo 2.1.4 - radky; Bacon Recorder 2.7 - don570; dillo 3.0.2 - playdayz; geany 0.21 - playdayz; Pmusic 2.5.3 - zigbert; Psip32 - Lobster;

New Programs -> PupMenu 2.0 - radky; getflash 0.9 - shinobar
Improved -> Help working in Abiword, Homebank, and web links in many programs Help -> About
Fixed -> guvcview 1.4.1-1 (the previous version would often crash if changing video size and capturing)

Updated programs in Luci-001.003 by members of the Puppy community: ffconvert 1.2 - shinobar, sfs-load 1.3 - shinobar, PupControl 1.8.9 - radky, Sylpheed 3.1.3 - playdayz, mtpaint 3.40 - don570, PupApps 1.6.2 - radky, PupSnap 1.6.3 - radky, pprocess 2.2.4 - zigbert, Pburn 3.5.0 - zigbert, firewallstate 2.1 - tasmod, grub4dos 1.7.2 - shinobar, isomaster 1.3.9 - BarryK, pbackup 3.1.9 - zigbert, pfilesearch 1.28 - zigbert, pfind 4.24 - zigbert, PupClockset 1.9 - radky, PupSysinfo 2.1.3 - radky, Bacon Recorder 2.6.1 - don570, Pmusic 2.4.4 - zigbert

Updates in previous version (luci-001.002): includes fixes for usb/sound (as in Lucid 528.004), Pmusic 2.3.0, Pburn 3.4.3, PupControl 1.8.7, Mtpaint 3.4.0, PupApps-1.6.1, PupSysInfo-2.1.1, PupSnap-1.6.3, ffmpeg libraries 0.8.9. Thanks to 01micko, Quickpet -> Drivers is now enabled in 3HD. Gnome-mplayer is upgraded to 1.0.4 and has better handling of DVD Menus. XineDVD has better video quality plus a new skin. Pupsave Hot Backup to backup the save file--before doing anything risky - Menu -> Utility -> Pupsave Hot Backup. GetLibreOffice - easy install of latest Libre Office - Menu -> Documents. Gnome-alsamixer is included - this is the mixer for those with multiple sound cards - each is displayed in a tab. Remaster Pup has improvements by rerwin. ALSA Sound Wizard has improvements . alsa-info.sh to get alsa info (run in terminal). SFS-Load updated to 1.2 by shinobar. wcpufreq is updated to 0.8 by tazoc. mms protocol plays with chromium-based browsers (Iron, Chrome, Chromium). Isomaster works now in right-click by don570. /tmp directory set to 777. New program for installing Flashplayer to avoid obsolescence when Adobe moves flashplayer. Guvcview update to 1.4.5 to run in 3HD. Mplayer reverted to 1.0rc4 to avoid bug in DVD menus..

Striking Wallpaper by swiatmar -> http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 996#580996

It is recommended that any luci save files from previous versions of 3HD be backed up before upgrading with this iso. If you are in doubt, please ask first.

Kernel sources for 2.6.37.6 kernel -> ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet ... _spup2.sfs

Devx -> http://diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/luci_devx_001.sfs
af07a4f3df3492d2dd3fe5a367e8d1c0 luci_devx_001.sfs

It is recommended that people use the latest version unless they are happy with a previous version.

Three-Headed Dog based on Lucid 5.2.8 but it is not the successor to Lucid 5.2.8. Rather it is an experiment, using a newer kernel--the 2.6.37.6 kernel used in Slacko. That is why it is luci instead of lupu, so it doesn't accidentally overwrite someone's Lucid. I also put it into Puppy Derivatives for that reason. Please do not use Lucid updates for Three-Headed Dog.

Possible Issue: If you lose video after installing the Update, please click the play icon on the desktop to open gnome-mplayer, then choose Edit -> Preferences, click the drop-down Video Output menu, and change to x11 (from xv). This is a no-win situation because DVD menus do not work well in x11. It is recommended to use XineDVD to play DVD's--it is the default if you just click the DVD icon.

For Historical Interest

***Three-Headed Dog Version 2 Take 2***

There are quite a few enhancements and updates. This is experimental and a work in progress. Please regard it as a developmental release. By design it should be installed with a clean install--it won't update anything.

-> Mplayer with ffmpeg 0.8.2+ (the latest plus)
-> Pmusic 2.0.2 by zigbert
-> Pburn 3.3.6 (identifies itself as 3.3.5) by zigbert
-> Cloud Apps, (Menu -> Utility) by szzindian
-> wcpufreq 1.8 by tazoc
-> remaster fix by rerwin
-> tempestuous's extra firmware for ath9k
-> will boot usb with no drives ext4
-> PupSysInfo in PupControl 1.7 by radky
-> Firewallstate 2.0 by tasmod
-> shinobar's latest first run wizard by shinobar and rerwin
-> Sylpheed 3.1.2
-> GetFlash to install/update Flashplayer (since it now changes weekly) by 01micko
-> libgconf2-4 3.1.90 (enables recent Chromium-based browsers without "pinwheel of death")
-> libgtk+ 2.20.1 (stops gtk warnings from inkscape and presumably others)
-> hostname fix by rerwin
-> usb-modeswith 1.1.9 (the latest) from rerwin
-> big modem drivers in zdrv, who knows?

It is a good thing to frequently update the index to pet-packages-lucid in PPM. Just open Quickpet then More Pets -> Update Lupu PPM. The new Seamonkey 2.3.3 is there now along with Iron 13.

Since Three-Headed Dog has a different kernel than Lucid the Lucid video drivers won't work.

The ATI fglrx driver from Slacko works for my HD 3850 card.

Nvidia drivers: Please see this message.

Three-Headed Dog will be maintained--after all Lucid is an LTS (Long Term Support) release!

Three-Headed Dog 5.2.9 is the fastest, friendliest, and most fun Lucid yet. It is the fastest because it is the first Lucid derivative to use the C and ffmpeg libraries optimized for i686 computers rather than the older i386 computers. It is the friendliest because special attention has been devoted to the user experience. For instance, 5.2.9 uses the Roxterm console which has copy and paste and other features like a text editor, rather than the older x-terminal. Lucid similarly uses an entirely new Control Panel that makes it easier to customize and configure Lucid to one’s liking. Speaking of customizing Lucid, that is why it is so much fun. 5.2.9 includes more wallpapers and themes than any previous Lucid.

Three-Headed Dog has also received a thorough going-over under the hood. In addition to the faster libraries, there is new and updated firmware and drivers for many devices, especially modems, ethernet, and wireless devices. Further, the hardware detection and configuration routines have been extensively tested and enhanced by forum member rerwin--who has tested the routines for over 3 months since prior to the release of Lucid 5.2.5. Finally, the overall look and feel, the friendly and fun stuff, has been influenced by experiments forum member pemasu who has created a series of very popular Puppies since the release of 5.2.5. In his honor, Two-Headed Dog 5.2.8 is nicknamed Finlandia.

I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

if we are starting again, there is this little issue too
Regarding the preference "rt2800usb:rt2870sta", I rewrote the code that handles that in Woof, but Lucid is built with an old version of Woof prior to that rewrite.
ref BK@ http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=02389 havent tested yet. these are drivers for wifi-N

if we are starting again
I can no longer do what I have been doing for the last year and a half. To be honest, I just cannot face any more bug reports. I am posting what I have got in case someone can use it, or someone can take over the project, or at any rate just handle all the bug reports. If not, there are some great looking Puppies that would be better places for the community's time and energy, imho.

Barry is right. Lucid is built with an older Woof, and because of the complexity and the decision to tweak the "last non-zzz Puppy" it would not be feasible to update the Woof. It would be more reliable and less hassle to just start over with a new upup. But I would think rerwin could fix the preference aarf mentions.

I should say that we, primarily rerwin, has been making improvements to the hardware detect and config routines, and udev, so there are some places we are probably ahead of Woof, some behind--but the behinds can be fixed when discovered.

Whether or not we can get a decent Official release out of the work we have done (without getting embroiled in a nightmare), it is time to move on.

Downloading now.....

Since Two-Headed Dog (aka 528) looks really solid and the 2.6.37.6 kernel works well in Slacko I don't imagine there will be a rash of bugs anyway.

If anyone has earned a break it's you....it was a good ride though. :)

playdayz, thank you so much for offering your time to us especially the kind of skills
you've given to a big community like we have here.

In every puppy you have released, I find no problem in my end because I felt that
you did these things to make us happy and to have more fun.

To all devs and contributors. Thank you too. My apology for not making so much contributions
but rest assured that I am with puppy whatever flavor it can offfer.

Thank you, thank you, and thank you so much! God bless you always. :D

Don't despair playdayz.
This 529 runs quite at the same temperature level as spup 312.
So there is improvement.
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

loading jre .sfs before running the startmount will cause a broken pipe which cannot be fixed by not loading the jre. need a new pupsave then run startmount first then configure jre.sfs.
this happened with the jre in quickpet whereas last time in 528 it was a different jre that still caused the same brokenpipe.

Good On You, playdayz.

I haven't been following your work lately as closely as others in this thread, but it seems their accolades for all your hard graft is really well deserved. I wonder though whether you've subconsciously linked the naming of your 3-headed Dog project with the original beastie - Kerberos (Cerberus) - guardian of the underworld. You've already highlighted that to continue further perfecting this project is an area that angels might fear to tread...

Yes - take a break- you don't need a Pup that bites the mind that feeds it,
Thanks, and Cheers!

Make and coordinate the necessary fixes and send them to me.
great looking Puppies that would be better places for the community's time and energy, imho.

tell us exactly which ones and why.
That's up to Barry and the community, but 01micko's Spup, pemasu's new dpup that Barry spoke highly of, iguleder has a dpup, stu90 has a dpup, and dejan555 is working on the original dpup again it looks like. Barry would like to see someone adopt Drake Pup I am guessing.

<More thought> From about the same shape these are in (or not as good), it took 6 weeks after Barry asked, to release Lucid 5.0. Barry picked me by surprise, for better or worse, thank goodness for 01micko, but we have a lot more people who can use Woof now. If you wanted to try to make an official Puppy, you might consider messaging Barry and stating what you got going. It might be fun to see 2 puppies in simultaneous coopetition.

Or maybe people should vote with their messages. Give these people the same support as you have given Lucid--that little bitty bug fix 5.2.7 now has 90 pages!

Good news Béèm, thanks. And in response to your other question, yes, I think running cooler should be something they work on as they advance the kernel.

Three-Headed Dog - kernel 2.6.37.6

#14 Post by Billtoo »

I did a manual frugal install of luci529
I installed xorg_high.
I installed luci_devx_529.sfs (528devx renamed) +
kernel_sources-2.6.37.6-patched_spup2.sfs + NVIDIA-Linux-x86-280.13.run

Sound and wired network were good on first bootup, resolution was
wrong but it's good after installing the proprietary nvidia driver.
Installed firefox 5.1 in quickpet.

No problems so far.

manual frugal install to ext4. used spup 2.6.37.6 broadcom wl.ko pet from this board and required use of built in Frisbee pet to make wifi connection.

installed ff 501.lucid525 pet and it seems very quick and responsive.

Fluffy anyone? :lol:

There are nvidia drivers in my brainwave repo.. not up to 280 as yet, 275 is there as well as 173 and 96.

http://brainwavedesigncentral.net/micko ... ages-spup/

Be warned, only the drivers 2.6.37.6s [NOT s5] are compatible. Use anything else there in this release at your peril! Most likely wont work.

EDIT: ati_fglrx-11.7 is now available too at the above link. Please read this post

#18 Post by Billtoo »

Manual frugal install to acer laptop.
Installed devx + kernel source sfs + ati-driver-installer-11-7-x86.x86_64.run

Fri 12 Aug 2011 Operating System: Three-Headed Dog-529 Linux 2.6.37.6
0.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Manhattan [Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series]
oem: ATI ATOMBIOS product: PARK 01.00

X Server: Xorg Driver: vesa
X.Org version: 1.7.6
dimensions: 1600x900 pixels (423x238 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: ATI
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series
OpenGL version string: 4.1.10907 Compatibility Profile Context

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 430
Core 0: 2260 1: 2260 2: 2260 3: 2260 MHz

sh-4.1# glxgears
25645 frames in 5.0 seconds
25855 frames in 5.0 seconds
25883 frames in 5.0 seconds

I have to start this laptop with pfix=nox,ram or it will go to the
desktop but not be able to create a save file on rebooting (screen
goes white and locks up laptop), choosing vesa until save file is
created and then installing proprietary driver works.

SNS worked to set up the wireless network.
Sound good.
