I have put a fully-loaded pup001 file, expanded to 640mb to fit Openoffice and heaps of other stuff, onto a cd, which I use to install Puppy onto multiple computers. The only thing I need to re-do for each system (usually) is the sound, but when I run alsaconf, it says there's no card database. Obviously in 1.0.8.r1 that's all taken care of in the first boot - but with my method there's no first boot anymore because the pup001 is pre-copied onto FAT.
Apologies for being stumped - I've been a Puppyist since the 0.9.x days, but this one's got me...

1.0.8r1 can't run alsaconf from portable pup001 (Solved)
When I try running it from the setup wizard menu I press "Enter" to start and it just flashes some text below the gui screen then disappears completely! So the next thing I tried was running "alsaconf" in a terminal and I get the message that there's no card database (presumably the same message that cancels out the wizard). I'll show a shot of it here.
So then I tried a fresh first boot into a new pup002, thinking that the files might be in tmp and disappear after the config is done. I thought I might copy them into my permanent Puppy and try it that way. But I couldn't hear the woof when I booted, so I checked that the amp was plugged into the right hole and the main power came unplugged (getting the idea of how clever I am yet?). And just now I forgot I did that so after I post this I'll try going into a pup003 with everything right and see if I have any luck...
cheers

- So where's the card database, and how do I get a new one to re-do alsaconf?

alsaconf.cards
Your can recover your missing alsaconf.cards file by going to ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributio ... ackages-1/ (main download site)it is in alsa_utils-1.0.8.tar.gz, download it, extract with X archive, it is located in alsa_utils-1.0.8/var0/tmp, move tmp folder to your /var. Keep a copy to be safe in your /root folder somewhere. Good Luck, Kal
Re: alsaconf.cards
Yay! That was the exact right answer - I did it, and now I'm listening cheerfully to xrmradio.comTexas.Kal wrote:Your can recover your missing alsaconf.cards file by going to "ftp://ibiblio

I'll re-burn the 640-meg portable pup001 with the card database in a permanent folder, then copy it into /var/tmp to do the sound for each pc. A little bit fiddly, but it's the best way I've thought of to do multiple installs without having to install all the packages every time.
(Just as an aside - I'll make a more official announcement later when we've officially launched, but I've got a group together to form an I.T. co-op in the Blue Mountains, NSW Australia, which will specialise in selling refurbished pcs running Puppy Linux. Here's our site: www.computeraccessproject.org )
Thanks Kal, and Happy Puppying!
