beautiful :)

#381 Post by pacer106 »

Am running from Next 502 now & its very smooth everything looks great :)
Had an issue only I seem to have with this puplet not liking to get past the dhcp IP address asigning (took about 10 minutes to aquire an IP using frisbee sfs i made).

First tried sns but did not detect my network initially a few more scans & it did. Entered info & it failed to aquire IP due to a dhcp error im tryin to find a log for so I can post it for some possible help.

No more error when mounting drives with pmount :)

Love the cursor theme as well much prettier. Opera browser seems a bit quicker as well compared to previous releases :)

Going to try to find the sns failure to connect log if there is such a thing & do a few more tests.

I'm pretty sure it's nothing but a DHCP timeout; it happens sometimes. The dhcpcd package and the kernel are same as in previous releases so I guess it's nothing to worry about.

I wasnt worried about it I still think its actually more to do with my network setup then anything else.

Was just going through WMPrefs & I see changing the tile sizes is now working that never worked before. Was hoping the text color was fixed as well but not so far in my first test.

Very impressed so far :) I think this puplet could be a big hit in the near future with many pup fans.

Was thinking of putting together some helper things like how to add things to the right click menu & how to associate files for double click opening if theres nothing like that on the forum already for window maker.

Just out of curiousity how would I remove the version of the dhcp thats in this? I looked in the remove installed packages but did not see anything in a quick scan.

Yep, the remastering tool does not register the packages it integrates. The dhcpcd binary is /sbin/dhcpcd; you can try the Quirky package (which is older), it could work better for you.

Thanks for the info Iguleder.

After i get this one setup & a save file made ill reboot with pfix=ram & try that out.

I noticed the ppm does not have any repos when 1st loaded until its updated. Any particular reason why?

Going to make a new theme for 502 I think. Any suggestions from anyone?

PPM is empty because the package lists are empty; they're simply huge, about 15 MB if I remember right. Just click the update button.

It does seem to be coming along nicely, and I like the new build scripts saving the source code now. I saw a similar issue with DHCP, but it was only on the first boot that it hung, manually running the setup wizard fixed it.

net-setup.sh is messed up though, gets stuck in an infinite loop because it's .mo files were missing - I assume some logic which is stripping out translation files in the remaster script removed it, haven't dug further than that.

Startup with profile, .xinitrc, and delayedrun still seems a bit screwy, I'll dig through those files to see what can be tweaked.

Last thing I saw was that the /.3builddistro didn't work on Lupu 5.25, which is where I've been running woof. Seemed to be some sort of perl error, but mksquashfs was also complaining about a syntax error, which didn't make any sense to me as I'd just upgraded it to the latest version. Will stick with running the remaster scripts from Next.

Hi Iguleder,

You really do think out of the box and this has lead to the developement of what I believe to be a very promising project for the puppy community. It's great how you are trying to make a smaller, faster puplet. However...

I know that you (and some others) like Window Maker, but could you please consider adding a secondary, alternative Window Manager that is more familiar to puppy users? Perhaps Jwm, IceWm, or Openbox? It would add to the size only a little.

Yes I find Window Maker interesting and I now fool around with it once in a while for fun, but I am having trouble with some of the simplist things such as resizing a window, and trying to hide the desktop icons on the top-right of the screen when I maximize Firefox.

I realize that this is your experiment for your own pleasure, but if you are sharing it with the rest of the community, why make it harder to use? Why not make it more user friendly?

Your puplet may be fast, but the speed is negated by the time it takes them to learn how to do things that are so simple to do in other operating systems.

Please try to take this as constructive criticism. Your puplet is a work of genius..but it may be too hardcore for the average user, who is not so familiar with cli and terminal commands.

Nextpup already has the great qualities of speed and small-size. If you can add more elements of user friendliness, I think that (IMHO) Nextpup would be the best, or at least one of the best 32-bit puplets yet.

Hello Tman & others who find Window Maker not so friendly.

I am no expert with window maker myself but i do know of a place to get basic info. http://windowmaker.org/documentation/faq/using here is the FAQ about using Window Maker.

I am thinking of putting together a guide with some screenshots for doing some of the simple things (for example resizing of windows & adding opening files options with emelfm2).

Just not gotten started on it yet but will soon.

Thank You Pacer106 for the info. I look forward to reading your guide. But I still think it would be beneficial to add a secondary Window Manager. I do love how Iguleder has gotten Nextpup down to such a small size as well as his innovations on improving speed. I hope he also tries to make it more user friendly. If not, then maybe I will just have to make my own derivative based on Nextpup.

Actually. I am in a dilemma of sorts. I am at a loss on which to base my next derivative. Right now I am thinking Nextpup, Racy Puppy, or 3-headed dog.

You are welcome Tman.

I have checked out slacko beta 4 from 01micko its pretty slick as is. I think it would be a great candidate for a slim version or lite version myself. I would try making one myself but I have failed at using woof several times. It is just a little to far advanced for me.

Next Puppy has forced me to learn a lot about things I never considered learning & I am very greatful for that. I am looking forward to figuring out the builder/remastering tool Iguleder is working on I might actually be able to use that someday lol.

The idea of another window manager is not to bad. a forum member named slackfan has installed JWM & has a thread of some info about it. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=71853

Yes, I will following the Slacko thread, but I think I will wait until it gets officially released and more of the bugs get worked out.

EDIT: Pacer; the link below might be helpful for you and others who wish to remaster:

Don't worry about a second window manager. I got E16 100% integrated and it's simply great - it's smaller than Fluxbox and Openbox and much more configurable.

I'd like to do some JWM build, too - I'll take a look at JWM this weekend probably.

Thanks for the input!

I think (not sure) that JWM still has full screen bug - interesting thing i noticed when reading about the latest version of openbox is you can now have menu icons much like JWM.

Can I ask, out of curiousity... What is the 'fullscreen bug' that everyone refers to? I use JWM 100% of the time, and find nothing annoying about fullscreen, with anything I use - vlc, firefox, geany, etc, etc,)...

Can someone describe the bug to me? I probably have it, but never noticed... What should I look out for?

Launch Firefox or Seamonkey and press F11 (full screen) and then try to get out of full screen mode.

OK, yeah, I never had this problem... It works fine for me.. As does gxine, which I heard was also a problem. Thanks for the info!
