Thanks, I guess I am too computer challenged to be able to use it but it was a cool experience to try out and I wish you luck with it.

Slacko most likely will be my "next" for a while.

Unless member seaside tell me how to get SFS-exec going on "Next".

I started working on an improved package builder, that automatically produces PET packages instead of directories containing the packages.

I want to be able to rebuild the whole Next repository in one click. I'm gonna improve the Window Maker build script to integrate Puppy menus, don't worry.

Regarding SFS-exec - read its requirements. Try to run it from the terminal.

SFS seems much superior to PET as it keeps things separate and simple to add and remove.

What is the down-side of SFS versus PET, please?

I haven't been able to install the proprietary ati driver, I
downloaded your linux-2.6.39.4.tar.bz2 and installed it according to
the readme file but I got errors when I tried to install the driver.
The kernel source usually comes as an sfs file such as
kernel_src-2.6.39.3-patched-lupe27.sfs and can be loaded with the
bootmanager.
I installed xorg_high from lucid so xine and umplayer etc. are working
good but the proprietary driver would be better.

I'm enjoying next 5 and having fun getting it stocked up with my
favorite applications.

Thanks

First of all, I mentioned it again and again: do NOT install Xorg_High because it's already built-in and incompatible with the Lucid one.

And regarding the sources - I have no idea what you're talking about, you just need kernel_sources-2.6.39-4.sfs.

I started over on my desktop with an nvidia card.
I installed the devx and kernel source sfs (why didn't you put a link to the actual file in the first message of page 1?)
I installed the nvidia driver and report-video-glx-0.4.pet.

Isn't glxgears part of the built-in Xorg_high?

I know the driver installed because nexuiz is working.

I installed an old friend to make things easier too.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I deleted the save file on my other desktop and created a new one, hardware acceleration is not working on that one with the built-in Xorg_high.It has an ati hd5470 card, nexuiz will start but the only way to get out of it is a reboot.

I have another desktop with intel graphics, it's not hooked up at the moment but I may give that a try tomorrow and see how it goes on that one.

Thanks

edit: I discovered that installing rox was a mistake :) it's gone now.

just a note or three.....

1/for those who haven't and want to install pets, you can start the ppm by opening a console and typing ppm in it.

MAKE SURE YOU STICK TO DPET STUFF! OTHERS MAY SERIOUSLY STUFF IT UP AND REQUIRE TOTAL REINSTALLING

3/note that you will get some errors when installing pets and you need to check for dependancies and install them if needed, but most of the errors relate to the puppy menu systems, which of course is not installed and therefore are not using, so you can disregard.

2/you can change your window manager size by opening a console and typing

Code: Select all

xrandr -s 1024x768
for screen size of 1024 x 768 (set similarly for your others, but they must be acceptable sizes).

I'm beginning to like this, more and more as it reminds me of when I first started with unix (pre linux) and just about everything had to be manually console started each time you started the system up. But you had a lot more control on what was loaded and running.

And just an idea for Iguleder, I wonder if we need the full X11, maybe the cutdown version (much simpler to work with and about half the size) would do. I'll find the url later when i'm at home and add it here().

regards to all

Yes, glxgears is part of what Lucid calls "Xorg_High" but it's not needed to have hardware acceleration, it's just a test program that wastes space.

And yeah, I'm for that kind of control, I'm working on the next build at the moment and it has automatically-generated menus but they don't comply to Puppy's menu structure so many things are missing, including the whole "Setup" menu, which isn't standard.

I'm going to write a Window Maker patch to work around this problem, I guess. I just rewrote Puppizard and made it generate PETs automatically, so I can finally say that Next is fully automated. :)

EDIT: wow, the menu generation still doesn't work. It's very hard to get this thing working, I guess.

Good news! I wrote a very fast menu generator in Perl.

It works wonderfully, now I just need to create a menu template and make it replace the applications menu with a generated one.

EDIT: here it is!

To get a new menu, run this:

Code: Select all

wm-xdgmenu
Then, restart Window Maker. :)

[quote="Iguleder"... you just need kernel_sources-2.6.39-4.sfs.[/quote]

Hope it is okay to ask. How does one activate these then?
Or what is in them that anybody would need?

Activate what? These are the sources. It's are the kernel SFS, just install it as any other SFS. It's needed if you want to install third-party drivers.

Regarding the menu generator - just read my comment.

Hmm... Guess i have to remove xorg_high myself. I have never done anything like this before. How do i remove xorg_high from the sfs??

Posted: Fri 19 Aug 2011, 12:02
by Iguleder
You can't remove it easily, you'll have to extract the SFS, delete the files and create a new SFS.

The clean way to do this is building your own copy of Next using Woof. :)

by Darkgame
Err... Woof? Or you mean woofy?
Ive used woofy before. There will an option to delete files from the sfs, as long as u give it the directory of files to delete.
As for woof, ive always thought its too dangerous to even install it

You can get the list of files that came with Xorg_High through /root/.packages/builtin_files/Xorg_High. Just delete those. You could also use Barry's tool to remaster and remove the files, I just don't remember its name.

cool. Thanks alot.
I will be using woofy soon!

Just got round to installing Next puppy - nice work Iguleder 8) very minimal and completely different to anything i have ever tried before
wm-xdgmenu.pet works well and is very fast to generate the menus.

cheers.

Currently building the first testing build of alpha 2, this one is way better. Menus work out of the box and it has some extras, like LXTask and Viewnior.

Thanks for the inspiration, stu90 :D
