Yes, of course. I just find it totally unneeded - desktop icons are a means for quick access to common applications, but you already have Window Maker's dock.

There is also windowmaker drawer available in the debian repos. Easily configured. I can provide a basic walkthrough for setting up & configuring wmdrawer if someone would like me to.

Here is the complete desktop the above windowmaker drawer is pulled from.

you are right... Im just used to pulling the icon from ROX and using
that on desktop... ROX might not even be supported with the
NEXT/wmaker ?

wmaker makes an editable icon whenever an app is run, so,
if the app can be started, there is no icon problem; however, I
could still see ROX as helpful in this mix, as some applications
use oddball names or spelling, so, seeing the click-and-run icon
in a visible bin directory is quite useful.

thanks again for this innovative puppy distro !

For Next Pup users who do not like the current emelFM2 in Next Pup there is a new pet Iguleder made that has the default actions with files working much better. I am attaching the pet for anyone who would like to try it out.

There are a few instructions though.

delete ~/.config/emelfm2 before you install it.

put "feh" in /usr/local/bin/defaultimageviewer after installing.

So after editing defaultimageviewer it should look like this:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
exec feh "$@"
feh does not like .gif files it seems so double clicking to open a .gif file will not work but everything else i tried seemed to work great.

How to install pet?

Sorry for the noob question :( How to install a package from a .pet file under Next puppy? There is no Rox here that would accept click-on-filename...
Hey, is there anybody here who knows the secret about command-line usage of ppm?

:)

petget packagename and path/to/the/package if you are not in that folder.

To install a .pet in Next Puppy you will need to click on the .pet you want to install to hi-lite it.

Then right click on it to choose open with.

Type in petget & that will install the .pet.

If you install the updated Emelfm2 .pet you can then install .pets with a double click.

I have the same problem with an error message trying to install with petget regardless of which pet I try to install.

I've just booted with the new trinity-3.5.13.sfs and it's working great so far. It's much easier for me to use the KDE WM than it is to use the native Next WM.

Thanks for the new Trinity,
Jim

Petget uses tar binary. I had some problem with squeeze tar binary which caused failure of extracting txz. Not sure of course, if tar binary from debian sid will help with petget but you never know. Sid tar binary has been in exprimo for several versions now.

AFAIK tar 1.22 support xz, lots of pups are now on 1.26, at least, that's what I upgraded to recently...

Updated emelfm2.pet works well

Good news: I added the content of the updated emelfm2-0.8.0.pet (file-by-file, then commented out Line38 in a file which reported error). Now it can invoke petget that installs the downloaded .pet files well.
Thanks pacer106.

any chance you could briefly explain how to access emelFM2 and emelFM2-0.8.0.pet... once i get them open and see the files of each, i'm assuming i can change the files with leafpad... but, can't access the files of either one? thanks...

The pet itself can be downloaded from this link:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... h&id=47785
See pacer106's post above.
Well... it is a shame... I extracted the pet in wndws using 7zip  .
Resulted a folder. I put it in a pendrive then copied its files to their place one-by-one in next puppy (everything is under /usr ).

Sorry, but I wasn't able to understand how can I install pet in Next.
If I download that certain emelfm2.pet package, I cannot extract that with Xarchiver. (In emelfm2 -> "Open with" -> "petget" won't open any pets for me !)

Hi Norbertos! The half dozen posts preceding yours seem to be saying there is a bug in the tar utility in Next Puppy, and this prevents installing pets by the usual method. You can copy a tar utility from another puppy (Exprimo), or you can untar your .pet file on a different puppy and copy all the resulting files across to Next Puppy.

You're posting count implies you are a newcomer to Puppy linux. Welcome! Are you sure that Next Puppy is what you wish to try? It seems to have been an experimental/test bed, and development is now abandoned, so you might experience endless frustration when encountering even minor bugs.

For newcomers, I suggest that you look at either Exprimo, or Slacko. Here's a link to their threads: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=72805
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=70399

Can I ask what spec pc are you wanting to try linux on? If your first experience with puppy linux is relatively bug-free, you might be a much happier customer and decide to stay around. 8)

Shep, thanks for patience !
I'm not a starter, I'm using different puplets for one year. :D
I was looking for a FULL minimal memory-eating puplet ! And I liked this Puplet. I found it great !
Thanks for the advice, sorry for inconvinience !
[huh, and thanks for damn fast reply !]

Anyway, my specs are:

3 GHz, Pentium 4
512 MB DDR1 RAM
64 MB Intel Integrated Graphics

Maybe, it's very strong - compared to P1s, and so on - (what Puppy designed for, mainly), but I found this machine a lil' bit weak. :S

PS.: And don't worry ! I will stay with Puppy. :P

Every puppy is economical with memory. Have you learned that you can give the OS your whole 512 MB, so you'll nearly double available RAM, if at boot you hit <F2> and type puppy pfix=nocopy

Another way to make puppy occupy less RAM is to make your save file smaller, say 256 MB instead of the usual 512 MB. When squashed and loaded into RAM, this will leave more room to run applications. Instead of installing extra apps into the savefile, you can move them onto your HD where they are outside the save file. Sure, they may take a moment longer to start up, but I think you'll hardly notice that.
And I liked this Puplet. I found it great !
The developer has a satisfied customer. :)

3GHZ! What applications are you using where you find it a bit slow? Are you sure your tasks are not forcing it to swap a lot to the HD? Perhaps the nocopy boot option will mean there is less swapping to HD.

I think you should make more posts. So that others can benefit from your experience with Iguleder's pup.

Is this pup still available? The links on P1 seem dead.
