How to set up a network connection using Ndiswrapper

#1 Post by CatDude »

Hi

This is an example of how to set up a network connection
using Windows drivers and Ndiswrapper.

In this example i am using Lupu-525 as the Puppy version,
and a Netgear WG111v3 USB Adapter as the guinea-pig.
  • NOTE:
Newer Puppy versions have a native linux driver for this particular adapter,
so there is no need to use Ndiswrapper at all for it.

I am simply using it as i have no other adapter to use as the guinea-pig.
The following assumes that you are using a FRUGAL install,
and (most importantly) that you have already created a savefile.
  • NOTE:
It should also work with a FULL install too, though i personally do not use them,
so i cannot gaurantee that it will.
  • OK, first thing you need to do is get hold of the Windows driver files for your adapter, you normally need two files, a .inf and a .sys
and put a copy of them somewhere you can easily find them.
The exact location is entirely up to you,
below is where i put mine.

    • NOTE:
If your file extentions are in uppercase (ie: .INF), you may need to change them to lowercase
Once you have done that, click on the Connect icon on the desktop.

    Now follow the arrows.

    Step 14
As my network uses WPA encryption, i chose to use WPA/TKIP
if your network uses something else, then choose the appropriate button.

    Step 15

    Step 16
Select the profile you just saved.

After clicking Use This Profile, you should see something like this:

    • If this step fails (see next pic)
close the Network Wizard (and any other windows you have open)
      then REBOOT
      • Image
When you get back to the desktop, re-run the Network Wizard
but do not bother scanning, simply load your profile and try again.
Hopefully this time it will work, if it does, continue to get an IP address.
