Note: I'm very busy lately, busier than I hoped. This means I get very little time to work and Husky Pup will be ready, well, when it will. Check the thread and my site for updates.
Hello.

Recently I've decided that I want to do something with my old Pentium 4 machines. I also started developing GTK apps, so I though I could install Puppy on an old PC and just develop. Then I got a little idea - how about making it a VNC server, so I can develop GTK anywhere(mainly school)? And while we're at it, make a puplet. This whole thing is called Project Husky.

Right now, I'm working with a virtual machine(1.7GHz processor, 128MB memory, 5GB HDD) with Win2k on it until I finish the client.

It's running TightVNC Server just fine.

VNC view-only password: "win2k" (The view-only mode is pretty useless, unless you just wanna check it out.)

I've decided that running a Puppy server probably isn't a good idea as it's not too stable, so I'm trying to set up a Linux Gentoo box. Having a hard time getting it to work, but it's gonna be worth it. I also figured that since every user is different, the easiest solution would be to make a small tray utility - kinda like a LAMP(Linux Apache MySQL PHP), but with the added functionality of a VNC and VPN server. The utility will be distributed to a variety of distros. I might even make it cross-platform.

As about the client, I'm almost done. There's nothing to it, really - just a re-mastered LuPu-528 ISO. I'll try to get Woof to work properly and maybe make it lighter by removing stuff that aren't needed.

Please provide comments, suggestions and feedback.

Hi Mike what type of apps are you going to make? do you have any of them ready for testing, Barry has posted a reward for certain ones he wants done, here's a link http://puppylinux.com/development/projects.htm
Also if you need other ideas, it would be nice if mtpaint had a make over, it really needs a better layer window that is attached to the main screen and the default colour selector and brush selector box needs to look more like gimps, its very confusing the current layout. Mtpaint is a great small app but its always been one of ugliest gui's going.

I'm afraid all my projects got deleted when I formatted WinXP and forgot about them. I'm correctly trying to develop an IDE that will look like MicroASM. Text coloring will be controlled with configuration files, and it will have Tiny C Compiler built-in.
As a graduation project, me and my friends are working on an equation solver in Java.
Once I finish with those two, I'm gonna get into sending packets and make some network applications, such as a LAN chat client.
I'll have a look at the link, and see if I promise I'll check mtpain out.

I'll resume working on my projects as soon as I have my server fully set.

Yesterday my server randomly encountered a critical error. When I VNC'd to it, it had 53 seconds left before it restarts itself. I assume it's my machine's way of saying "I want Linux". And so, I just got to work on setting up Puppy.

UPDATE -
I was able to get my main desktop back to work(GPU...) so now I have the Pentium 4 fully available for Puppy. At the moment, Husky is offline. I'll try to get an Ethernet cable and bring it back up today(which also reminds me, I should probably get a backup webhost) and replace the Win2k guest on WinXP with Puppy after school tomorrow. We're having an important test, so I'll be busy studying until then.

Sorry for the inconvenience(if someone even visits my site, lol), but my computer really seems to hate dynamic DNS clients. I've decided that I should terminate the web server project and get a free web hosting provider as recommended by tlc.
That would solve the web server issue, but I will still need dynamic DNS/static IP to assign to the domain vnc.silent.co.cc and make my life a lot easier. I will probably go with dynamic DNS as the average user doesn't have nor need a static IP. Dynamic IP is also, as far as I know, more secure because the IP address changes all the time.
I might as well do what I've already done in the past to make the network in my house accessible anywhere - use a VPN(Virtual Private Network). This might help with the IP problem. It would also enable to relatively securely share your files. Think about it - they are only accessible to authorized computers in your VPN which you, as the sysadmin, control all the time. This allows you to easily kick/ban unwanted members in case they break in.
The Husky Client can be configured to automatically connect to the VPN every time it connects to the Internet.

UPDATE - The website is now hosted on x10hosting.com and the new address is silent.x10.mx. Soon the domain will be updated to silent.co.cc.

UPDATE 2 - I've decided that the website should get an overhaul. So I gave it an overhaul. Check it out!

New domain(husky.co.cc) bought, some new content added.

Maybe one of your pentiums could have a 'husky ranking of 1'

Maybe the new system testing code can provide a generic way of saying this setting or this hardware is faster or has more huskys

To power my machine/computer I use
Puppy
Dog power

How many husky's of pulling power (husky's pull sleds) does one computer have compared to another?
How does one Puppy compare to another?

Using your computing skills you might like to create a program
with a reference of 1 husky - running on an old machine
This would become the standard. Then we try different Puppy's running the benchmark
to see their Puppy rating.

Yes.
Basically we need to be able to run Puppys, puplets and wooflets on the same hardware and have comparison figures.
So we know the software is running slower or faster.
At the moment we just say, 'it seems a lot faster'.
That is usually because it is running on a pristine system.
We need numbers.
Anyway thought it might appeal to you as a project.

Unfortunately I have lots of stuff going on(school, classes, trying to get Gentoo to work, Husky OS, a graduation project[see my site under Projects] and an IDE). I'll probably take a look into that as soon as the load is reduced.
