Need better driver for NVIDIA GeForce GT520 (abandoned)

#1 Post by karm2865 »

I give up tiring to get the drivers to work in the full install.
I have decided i am trying to get puppy to do things in ways it was never relay meant to and I just do not know what i am doing. may be at a latter date i will give it a another go.
thanks to those who tried to help me.

`````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Installed a new video card an NVIDIA GeForce GT 520.
I was so happy to get rid of ATI Radeon problematic drivers
BUT
look for drivers for Puppy the quick per recommended xorg high so i clicked the button and installed it the desktop is huge 8oo by600 or something like that and that's the larger one of the 2 i can pick from so i reverted to the default driver it is okay and it works but i need better drivers for some of my games
so i searched for the proper Linux drivers and found nothing in the forums so tried puppy Google than regular Google and found
LINUX DISPLAY DRIVER - X86
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-disp ... river.html
but being Linux challenged i haven't a clue how to install it.
hopefully some one already has this and just needs to point me to it if not would some one instruct me as to how to install it or make a pup package out of it for me.
thanks.
Karm
How to compile Nvidia driver
#2 Post by Jim1911 »
Steps to compile Nvidia driver
1. Download the devx and kernel source sfs files for Lucid 5.2.8
2. Put them in /mnt/home and then run the boot manager in the
setup wizard to have them loaded on the next reboot,then reboot.
3. Download proprietary driver for graphics card from:
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
and place it in /mnt/home.
4. Logout to the prompt and switch to the directory that the driver
was downloaded to using
Code: Select all
cd /mnt/home
5. Compile driver by executing
Code: Select all
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-285.05.09.run
or the similar driver for your card.
6. When it's finished compiling run xorgwizard and choose the nvidia
driver and set the resolution.
7. At the prompt enter
Code: Select all
xwin
to get back to the desktop.
:D Hello,
If you have tried NV and no joy..
You need to compile the proprietary driver...
From a forum instruction post..
From the Murga forum, in case it helps anyone..
How to compile a video driver:
NVidia for my sons Wary...
His machine is a Sony Vaio Desktop
1.4g P4, 128mb ram, 512mb swap
NVidia geforce 400 video card...
How?
Make sure you have about 200mb free space in your save file first..
1 Download the NVidia Linux package for your card.
For his it was :
Nvidia-Linux-x86-93.43.20-pkg1.run
2 Download the devx for your system.
His is Wary 5.10 so wary_devx.510.sfs.
3 Download the kernel sources for your system.
His was kernel sources 2.6.32.28.sfs
4 Enable both sfs files in the bootmanager, and reboot..
5 After rebooting, and making sure both sfs files are enabled..
Drop out of X to the command prompt and run the installer..
For his I typed:
/mnt/home/Nvidia-Linux-x86-93.43.20-pkg1.run
Let the installer do its thing, and watch for any errors..
(If you have the wrong driver, which I did the first time around, the installer scans your card, and will tell you which package you need...)
When it is finished, reboot...
After rebooting, run xorgwizard, and choose nvidia..
Ta-da...
After this, my sons old machine gets WAY better frame rates than my Intel graphics ever has....
Also, with 3gb of ram a swap is probably never going to be used..
Unless you are using a Pup with Highmem/PAE etc, 3gb is all Puppy can see anyhow... Generally, 1/2 of ram is plenty of swap, so for 1gb, 512mb is fine.. But with 3gb, unless you compile programs while gaming while having 7 browser tabs open while woofing up a new Pup, and have a highmem/pae Pup, your swap use will be 0.. save the space.. 1 gb is plenty..
Close the Windows, and open your eyes, to a whole new world
The nvidia-glx-285.05.09-dpup-2.sfs. Driver must be compilied with the same kernel and souce as your pup distribution uses.
The technique described above will work, just download new driver here and follow the procedure described above. Apparently there is a new driver 290.10 for your GeForce 500 Series card that came out 2011.11.22.
I don't think it is the same
285 is newer version which supports GX 520.
You cannot use nvidia-glx-285.05.09-dpup-2.sfs because it is for dpup.
nvidia-glx-285.05.09-2.sfs for Lucid Puppy. You need not compile nor kernel source.
Just load it using SFS-loader(at Menu>Setup>Setup Puppy) and go to X server Wizard(xorgwizard).
there is 290 as jim suggests. You need to compile if you want to use this newest version.
Loading SFS
#10 Post by shinobar »
One suggestion:
The SFS files cannnot load on FULL installed Puppy by the BootManager.
But you can use the SFS-load.
Right click the SFS file and select 'sfs_load'.
Right click the SFS file and i don't find a SFS-load.
but i did find one under quickpet and converted the sfs to a pet goin to try it now
next time some one tells me nvidia drivers are better and easier to use with Linux than radon ATI there in danger of a punch in the face.
That will be OK.
The SFS-load can run from the main menu, but also the quickpet can do almost the same thing as for the full install.
Maybe you need to reboot PC to enable nvidia driver as for the full install.
I too tried to get an Nvidia 520 board to run properly on Puppy version 5.20 and 5.28. The best I could do is get 1080 resolution with a half-inch black border around it. I returned the board and am now running an 8400 video card, no problems. The 520 was twice the performance at half the power consumption, tho.
reboot
run nvidia x server settings
You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.
Have you run the X-server Wizard(xorgwizard)?
EDIT: Ah, you did but got no success. I cannot guess what happened...
The SFS_load does not install the files already in the system.
I guess you installed the nvidia sfs twice, from Quickpet and from SFS_load.
You had to uninstall previous install using the Puppy Package Manager before new install.
But anyway your system seems already installed the needed files of the nvidia driver.
Suppose what you need is just to run xorgwizard and choose nvidia.
After paying more attention to the information in this post, I went back and
re-purchased the Nvidia GT520 board ("$15 after rebate").
I went to http://182.164.208.244/puppy/opt/ and downloaded the nvidia-glx-sdl-285.06.09-2.sfs
file, then did "Setup > Setup Puppy > SFS-Load on-the-fly" and loaded the sfs file.
I exited to the prompt and ran xorgwizard, then ran xwin.
It looks very nice now, 1080 resolution, no black borders or anything. The colors look good too.
This is all from a frugal setup of Puppy 5.28
One question: I'm ready to fiddle with compiling the source. I loaded the lupu_devx_528-3.sfs file
from ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/puppy-5.2.8/ but don't see the kernel source
anywhere. Is it part of the unleashed material? If so, where is the unleashed
file? I see the unleashed files for Puppy Linux versions 2,3, and 4 at ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/
but don't see anything for the version 5 series.
