I encountered the same problem with 3.1 kernel I compiled for dpup. The nonswitching Firewallstate was fixed by recompiling the kernel. Firewall script is complex in Puppy and it tries to uninstall and install several filtering kernel modules. If those modules are compiled in and not as loadable modules, the Firewall state script fails in its state recognition.

So....probably this tiny little bug means that the whole kernel needs to be recompiled according how Barry Kauler has ticked the filtering modules of network traffic.

Pemasu,
Thanks for the input. Now I just have to see if Wuxi is going to do a recompile of the kernel again since that is beyond me at this point.

As a point of interest regarding the firewall bug, I switched the 3.1 kernel into a fresh Frugal install of Lucid-5.25 and it's the same result. The firewall icon never switches to firewall ok.

I just downloaded and did frugal install of Slacko with 3.08 kernel and got the same bug with the firewall. Icon doesn't switch to firewall ok. Could it be something on my system or is it in the kernels?

Got a tiny little bug here. Still testing 310, every thing still working good except the tray icon for firewall never changes from the warning icon to the ok icon. Any solution for this?
Mill0001,
Sorry for late reply,Yes The kernel was compiled without something for firewall.I will add this support for it later! Thank you!

Hi Wuxiandianzi, I downloaded and set up the 528 with 3.18 kernel and the firewall is working as it should. Yay! I will continue to use it and report back if I find any more bugs. Thank you very much, Lee.

My solution was that I downloaded Barrys 3.X kernel source sfs. then I launched my 3.1 kernel from its folder and Barrys kernel from its folder using Barrys ./config on his folder and mine in 3.1 folder with make menuconfig. I ticked the firewall section exactly as Barry had done. That way I got firewall section so that Puppy firewall script was happy with unloading and loading several modules. I then used that 3.1 kernel .config for really compiling the 3.1 kernel and the firewall script and firewall state script was happy. I still can see them smiling.....

Pemasu :Thanks, yes, that is sure a good way to configure kernel.
but I always see help in menuconfig.

Testing 528 k 3.1.8 Testing 528 k 3.1.8

Lupu 528 with k3.1.0 remains my number one pup!
A quick test of k3.1.8 (manual frugal install to fat32 USB2 stick - ext2 save)
gave no problems but no real gains either.

Hardware detection seems slicker but k3.2 looks like a real winner.

Nvidia pet worked fine.

Hi wuxiandianzi, Quickpet not working with 528 k 3.1.8, the fixquickpet pet you made before doesn't fix it. I don't know what to edit to make it work. Help please.

Hi Mill0001:
You can open /usr/local/quickpet.sh with text then seache "3.0.16", and you can add 3.1.8 behand 3.0.16. NOTE, do not forget "|".

B43 returns - but only for this k3 puppy

#148 Post by peebee »

Hi wuxiandianzi

[edit] After making the report below I tried 01micko's new slacko5.3.1.1 with k3.1.9 and found that it still had the "B43 not detected" problem - so wondering if you can think what might be different in your compile of k3.1.8 which causes B43 detection to work? I'm sure both 01micko and pemasu would be interested to know how you did it - thanks [/edit]

Delighted to report that support for the Broadcom B43 wifi seems to have returned with K3.1.8 thank goodness...

Still the strange problem with savefile creation in that the standard first reboot dialogue results in a savefile size of minus 1 Mb so fails to create the savefile - as reported previously this can be cured by loading the pupsaveconfig .pet and using that to define the pupsave parameters.

Maybe of help to others - I use grub4dos and have a standard menu.lst file that loads all puppies - so I needed to rename vmlinuz and initrd.gz before they would boot - but simple rename was all that was needed.

Bit confusing to a simple soul like me to have the spup desktop background in lupu - had to check I'd loaded the right version lol.

But congrats on this experiment
Cheers
